Allen Brain Atlas: New tools for studying the brain• Project to create online 3D map showing

how and where each of 21,000 genes is activated in the mouse brain

• 90% of mouse genes have a direct counterpart in humans

• Project began in September 2003 and was completed 3 years later

• Atlas shows which areas of the brain can be affected by disease, which genes in those areas are turned "on" and which genes are turned "off.“

• Invaluable tool for scientists studying mental diseases and disorders, like autism, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's

• Allen Institute now mapping the human neocortex, the outer part of the brain associated with higher functions such as consciousness, language, and sensory perception


The Genographic Project: An “Atlas of the Human Journey”

• The Genographic Project is a 5 year research project to study the migratory history of the human species

• The core of the project is the collection DNA samples from indigenous populations

• They contain key genetic markers that have remained relatively unaltered over hundreds of generations and are reliable indicators of ancient migratory patterns.

• Also involves collection of DNA from volunteers in general public

• Project is a partnership of National Geographic, IBM, and Family Tree DNA

• FTDNA using Tecan technology for processing and storage of collected DNA samples


Biofuels: The next generation of energy• The next generation of biofuels will come

from designer micro-organisms that metabolize renewable biomass to synthesize hydrocarbon fuels

• These fuels resemble existing petroleum based fuels that can be utilized within existing fuel infrastructure.

• Tecan is developing automated systems to evaluate and select engineered micro-organisms that demonstrate optimized conversion of feedstock
