Chapter 1: Brief Introduction

Quarter 1.1 Brief Introduction of Land Resource Management

• Land resource management in China is very important.

• This research field has a long history. It starts at Xia Dynasty, and keeps developing since then.

In ancient times it mainly concentrated on:

• Cadastral Management• Land Property Rights• Land Use Planning• Land Development• Prevention and Mitigation of Land Disaster

Chapter 1: Brief Introduction

Quarter 1.1 Brief Introduction of Land Resource Management

There are many aspects of it nowadays:

• (1) Land Institution and Policy• (2) Real Estate Management and Land Economics• (3) Land Property Rights and Cadastral Management• (4) Land Evaluation• (5) Land Use Planning• (6) Land Consolidation and Reclamation• (7) Land Information Technology ……

Chapter 1: Brief Introduction

Quarter 1.2 Brief Introduction of GIS

• GIS is short for Geographic Information System, it is a new-born technology.

• GIS is a combination of computer technology, mathematics, remote sensing, geographic science, statistic, surveying and mapping and many other fields of science.

Chapter 2: Traditional Ways of Land Resource Management

Traditional ways of Land Resource Management in China:

• Measure length by rope in ancient times, measuring tape and some other instruments in modern times.

• Draw pictures on paper by hand using rulers and pens.

• Keep paper files only to manage land rights and collect land tax.

• Traditional engineering methods for land developing and reclamation. ……It has a lot disadvantages:• Time delay• Easy to forge related information• Unsustainable ……

Chapter 3: Modern Ways of Land Resource Management

Apply new technologies (especially GIS) in land resource management.

GIS has been applied in many aspects of land resource management:

• (1) Land Monitoring and Regulation

• (2) Land Use Planning

• (3) Land Evaluation

Chapter 3: Modern Ways of Land Resource Management

Modern ways of Land Resource Management in China:

• Obtain data by RS and sophisticated instruments nowadays.

• Draw pictures on computers.

• Storage and process spatial information by certain software on computers.

• Show in 2D and 3D.

• Keep digital files and paper files at the same time.

• Modern engineering methods for land resource protecting, developing and reclamation.

Chapter 3: Modern Ways of Land Resource Management

It has many advantages:

• Real-Time• Difficult to forge related information• More sustainable than before ……It also has many disadvantages now:

• Difficult to get the correct information of every detail (because of low resolution, confusion of interpret spectrum and many other reasons).

……

• It still has a lot to improve. In the future, it will improve in many aspects.
