Location means reputation –
and at Archers Wood, we’d struggle to be more local.
This former paddock is located on the rural edge
of Fair Oak, where Bargate head office is based.
Archers Wood is found on Allington Lane – a scenic route
linking the village of Fair Oak to Southampton.
The development is screened from the lane by trees and
dense hedgerows, creating a secluded community.
The development’s layout is mindful of its rural setting,
maintaining the mature trees and enhancing ecology buffers
– to create a soft rural edge, adjacent to the fields beyond.

We have a responsibility to create homes and
developments that enrich the areas in which we build.
We want our customers, families and communities
to be proud of the place they call home –
and Archers Wood is a place we’re
proud to put our name on.
Be part of a community that welcomes everybody.

We build in cathedral cities, coastal
and riverside towns, market towns
and archetypal English villages.
We build homes in the places our
customers cherish. All we have to ask is:
“would we live here?” - and with Archers
Wood, the answer was a resounding “yes”.
So much so, we built our headquarters
right here, in Fair Oak.

H O W D I D Y O U S T A R T T H E G A R D E N S O C I E T Y ?
My business partner Aaron and I started in 2017,
when we took over the whole site. I had worked here
as a kid, so it’s very much in my roots. After I finished
University, I met Aaron - a friend from college - and
we decided to approach the owners to take on the
café as our first business. It was very small and very
traditional - but we’ve changed it up a bit since then.
A few years ago, there were some big chains looking
at buying garden centre sites, and the owners here
were looking at selling up - so Aaron and I approached
the owners to develop our own concept. I had been
doing other design work elsewhere, and there were
things that I wanted to do - there were gaps in the
market that I could see. And that’s how we came up
with this concept of home living, dining and events.
We wanted to pull all of that together as a
destination centre.
W H A T H A S B E E N T H E M O S T R E W A R D I N G P A R T ?
The best part for me is when I’m on the shop floor
and see people come in - and they’re like, “Wow,
I love this!”
We’re constantly changing things, always trying
to generate new ideas. I travel a lot so I’m always
looking at new stuff, and I try to make the next big
thing accessible. We’ve got a really good team, a
really creative team, and they’re passionate about
what we do. They’re here early in the morning and
late at night - whatever the weather.
H O W H A V E L O C A L P E O P L E R E S P O N D E D T O I T ?
Really well. Traditionally, there haven’t been many
people living in this area, but it’s growing all the time.
In the past, people in the local area would either have
to go to Winchester or London for this kind of thing.
Now, we’re being approached to put some pop ups in
the Centre of Southampton - because people want to
see it out there. But we’d rather draw people here; this
is where it all started. It’s a unique site, a unique space
and it’s unusual to have this amount of space around
here. People love the experience here - it’s somewhere
they can come to relax, pick up gifts and get stuff for
their homes. Hopefully it’s inspirational too, with the
displays we put on. We’re constantly changing them,
to give people something new to see each time they
visit. We want it to be a destination centre, somewhere
people choose to come to.
W H A T ’ S T H E B I G G E S T A T T R A C T I O N - W H A T G E T S P E O P L E T H R O U G H T H E D O O R ?
The restaurant is the soul of The Garden Society.
People really enjoy the food we offer - there’s quite
a range, encompassing everything from breakfast to
afternoon tea. And we’re just about to launch a bar,
so there’ll be something for everybody.
I guess that’s at the heart of the operation - our food
offering, and the unique environment it’s served in.
We’ve also got a couple of brands which are unique
to us here, and we’re always changing the way we do
things. Inspiration for the items and brands we sell
comes from my travels - and so do the products that
I design. Travelling helps me identify the next trends
coming in, which inspires my own personal purchases
as well as what I make for the store.
W H I C H C O U N T R Y I N S P I R E S Y O U T H E M O S T ?
That’s difficult. I spend a lot of time in the Far East - but
the Nordic influence has been particularly strong for
me. The Nordic look and feel has changed a lot, so it’s
quite an exciting time. Traditionally, the Scandi brands
and styles have been very tight. Now, they’re opening
up to nature - which is what I’m really excited about.
T H E G A R D E N S O C I E T Y

I guess for me it’s an anchor point - I’ve been here
since I was a kid. This used to be a fruit farm and
when I was little, we used to come here and pick
strawberries and dig a Christmas tree up. People ask
me why I still live in Southampton all the time, because
I work quite a lot internationally. It’s because it has
good connections but you don’t feel like you are in a
big city or town - especially here. You’re not in that
hustle and bustle of a big city - you can feel like
you’re out of the way of all of that, but still have
access to it.
I F Y O U C O U L D B U I L D Y O U R D R E A M H O M E , W H A T W O U L D I T B E L I K E ?
I like the idea of being able to bring the outdoors
in. There’s always got to be a tree or some plants,
whether real or faux - an element of nature, like in
those Far Eastern or Scandinavian home designs.
Functionality and good quality are important to me,
too. It’s got to be somewhere I can go back to and
relax after a busy day at work.
H O W W O U L D Y O U D E C O R A T E I T ?
I like things very clean and minimal, but very natural
as well. Materials like natural stone and wood - you
can see them in some of the things we have here.
I spent ages organising the correct marble for the bar
and the reclaimed timber for the walls, sourcing all
those natural materials which I really love.
I like a really nice, clean, calm colour - but I’m not
afraid of using colour - dark, punchy or moody
colours can create a relaxing, comforting space,
a whole movement away from the trend of really
clean and clinical.
W H A T W O U L D T H E G A R D E N B E L I K E ?
I’m a keen diver, always exploring the sea - so there’s
got to be a water element in my garden. I love
architectural plants, and having lots of foliage, too.
A garden should be somewhere you can relax - alone
or with family - and somewhere to entertain. It’s all
about getting out there as much as you can when we
have the weather for it.
People ask me why I still live in Southampton all the time, because I work quite a lot internationally.
It’s because it has good connections but you don’t feel like you are in a big city or town - especially here.
You’re not in that hustle and bustle of a big city - you can feel like you’re out of the way of all of that, but still have access to it.

Archers Wood is set on a gentle hill, where
you’ll find ponds bursting with wildlife.
The architecture at Archers Wood matches
its rural setting; with traditional painted timber
porches, square bay feature windows and
classically elegant buttresses.
Signature homes on each corner lead you
through meandering streets, giving Archers
Wood an organic, village feel. And little details
– like varying stock brick and clay tile colours
– really anchor these homes to their rural roots.

The most profitable way of developing
is to cram in as many homes as possible.
We’re not prepared to do that.
Our customers want space and privacy –
so, as with all Bargate developments,
Archers Wood features a meandering style,
with bigger plots and fewer homes in total.
I love all of it so there isn’t one feature. It’s the overall space, the design, the room sizes and the garden size.
I don’t think you get this with any other new home.
Everyone told me buying new you’d compromise on small rooms and a small garden.
I haven’t compromised on anything.

The Crest is a real feature home within the development.
A characterful roof and large timber balustraded porch and –
depending upon your home choice, buttress wall or projecting
bay on corner elevations – all add to make this home a
standout on the development.
These homes are not just interesting externally but pack a punch
inside too – with a spacious triple aspect kitchen and dining
space, including a modern feature island. A light, airy living
room overlooks the garden, while a practical utility space and
sizeable storage cupboard feature on the ground floor.
Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms – three large doubles and

and en-suite. A beautifully finished three piece family bathroom
completes this feature-filled home.

or study. This versatile home is ready to change with the needs
of a growing family, and the sensibly sized utility room will help
family life run like clockwork.
Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms, three of which are doubles.

From the outside, a traditional cottage with intricate details –
but inside, an open-plan, contemporary space. It’s a little slice
of village life, with modern practicalities.
The Fallow makes the kitchen the life and soul of the home, with
a modern design and a feature island. It provides the ultimate
in flexibility; with space for a dining table or for a home office
space, if preferred – and the relaxing living room looks out onto
a generous garden.
There’s no compromise upstairs either, with two double bedrooms
and one single bedroom or study space, along with a three piece
bathroom and an en-suite to the master bedroom.

Bargate Homes is now a wholly-owned subsidiary
of VIVID. This marks an exciting step in our
corporate development, as the business and brand
retains its total independence.
We’ve been building homes in beautiful locations
since 2006. Now, Bargate has access to significantly
increased finance – so we can continue to select the
quality land we buy. We will never
compromise on our values.
Every Bargate home is designed to add to the
character of its surroundings, and to encourage
communities to develop and thrive around
the homes we’ve built.
As VIVID are a not-for-profit organisation, they
completely endorse our guiding principle: do the
right thing for our customers. That means never
cutting corners or costs when we build our homes,
and always treating our customers with the utmost
regard throughout their purchasing journey.
Our dedicated, in-house customer care team
promises to address any warranty-covered problems
you encounter during the first two years of
living in your new home.

So, we can assure you that the Bargate
team has carefully overseen the construction
of your home, to current best practice, to
the plans supplied and to the specification
detailed in your brochure – using high
quality products, supplied by reputable
suppliers. We’ll show you around your
new home at various stages of construction
and explain how things work during your
pre-completion home demonstration.
Moreover, at Bargate this commitment to
quality goes a stage further. Such is the
pride in our product, that your home – like
every single one we build – will be further
inspected by one of our board of Directors.
Only when they are completely satisfied
will your home be released for you to
move in to.
However, we recognise that many people
are involved in the construction of your
new home and that, at the beginning of the
build process, it’s open to the variable British
climate – so sometimes, minor snags occur.
In fact, despite assurances you may have
heard from some of our competitors, we
don’t believe the perfect house has ever
been built.
Recognising this truth enables us to properly
deal with any issues that may arise.
Our dedicated customer care team will
rectify any legitimate matter promptly, for up
to two years after completion. Furthermore,
all our homes come with a 10-year structural
warranty to give you further peace of mind.
In short, we feel that this is a sensible and
pragmatic approach in an industry where
competitors often disappoint by over
promising and under-delivering.
