The research presented at the annual conference of the UKrsquos Quality Assurance Agency thisweek even suggests that monitoring studentsrsquo online feedback could form an important part ofhigher educationrsquos regulatory regime

Alex Griths a research ocer at LSErsquosrsquo Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation collectedmore than 200000 anonymised student ratings that score UK higher education providers on aone-to-ve scale from three data sources Facebook Whatuni and StudentCrowd
Not only did these reveal a relatively positive view of institutionsrsquo performance ndash the averagescore on the platforms was 433 411 and 408 respectively ndash the creation of an overall ldquocollectivejudgementrdquo score revealed that the ratings were closely correlated with established measures ofquality in the sector
For example the average rating for English providers that met requirements in their annualprovider review formerly operated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England was419 while the mean for institutions that needed an action plan to pass was 405
Meanwhile the average score for institutions that secured a ldquogoldrdquo rating in the teachingexcellence framework was 432 while for ldquosilverrdquo providers it was 417 and for ldquobronzerdquocampuses it was 413
Dr Griths also found a correlation between the ratings and providersrsquo overall satisfaction scoresin the National Student Survey
He suggested that unsolicited online feedback could play an important role in sector regulation inan era when there is strong demand for student-focused and timely information on sectorperformance but there is little appetite for new burdensome data collections
Dr Griths whose previous research(httpqualitysafetybmjcomcontentearly20170925bmjqs-2017-006847) has revealed howsocial media feedback could predict the results of UK hospitalsrsquo Care Quality Commission ratingswas even able to calculate month-by-month averages of student ratings These revealed thatstudents are most satised with their universities over the summer and in the rst weeks of termbefore slumping around Christmas rising through January and February and then hitting theirlowest point during March and April coinciding with institutionsrsquo examination and assessmentperiods
Dr Griths told Times Higher Education that his ndings reected the theory of the ldquowisdom ofcrowdsrdquo which states that even if the majority of people in a group are not especially well-informed or rational large groups can be remarkably insightful under the right circumstances

He argued that online feedback could be a ldquovery useful guiderdquo for a regulator or for a universityseeking to improve its performance
ldquoWe would never suggest that this gets used in isolation by a regulator to take action but it couldbe one part of their toolboxrdquo Dr Griths said ldquoIt can certainly throw up suggestions of wherethere might be concerns
ldquoWhat is advantageous is that this data is available on a daily basis so you donrsquot have to wait for awhole year for datardquo
Will Naylor the QAArsquos director of colleges and alternative providers said that while online datawere ldquounlikely to supersede the need for formal measuresrdquo of standards ldquothey may giveuniversities and colleges more opportunities for organisational learning and improving thestudent experiencerdquo
But Mr Naylor added ldquoFirst we need to do more work including to assess whether studentswould accept the use of feedback data for this purposerdquo

Alex Griths a research ocer at LSErsquosrsquo Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation collectedmore than 200000 anonymised student ratings that score UK higher education providers on aone-to-ve scale from three data sources Facebook Whatuni and StudentCrowd
Not only did these reveal a relatively positive view of institutionsrsquo performance ndash the averagescore on the platforms was 433 411 and 408 respectively ndash the creation of an overall ldquocollectivejudgementrdquo score revealed that the ratings were closely correlated with established measures ofquality in the sector
For example the average rating for English providers that met requirements in their annualprovider review formerly operated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England was419 while the mean for institutions that needed an action plan to pass was 405
Meanwhile the average score for institutions that secured a ldquogoldrdquo rating in the teachingexcellence framework was 432 while for ldquosilverrdquo providers it was 417 and for ldquobronzerdquocampuses it was 413
Dr Griths also found a correlation between the ratings and providersrsquo overall satisfaction scoresin the National Student Survey
He suggested that unsolicited online feedback could play an important role in sector regulation inan era when there is strong demand for student-focused and timely information on sectorperformance but there is little appetite for new burdensome data collections
Dr Griths whose previous research(httpqualitysafetybmjcomcontentearly20170925bmjqs-2017-006847) has revealed howsocial media feedback could predict the results of UK hospitalsrsquo Care Quality Commission ratingswas even able to calculate month-by-month averages of student ratings These revealed thatstudents are most satised with their universities over the summer and in the rst weeks of termbefore slumping around Christmas rising through January and February and then hitting theirlowest point during March and April coinciding with institutionsrsquo examination and assessmentperiods
Dr Griths told Times Higher Education that his ndings reected the theory of the ldquowisdom ofcrowdsrdquo which states that even if the majority of people in a group are not especially well-informed or rational large groups can be remarkably insightful under the right circumstances

He argued that online feedback could be a ldquovery useful guiderdquo for a regulator or for a universityseeking to improve its performance
ldquoWe would never suggest that this gets used in isolation by a regulator to take action but it couldbe one part of their toolboxrdquo Dr Griths said ldquoIt can certainly throw up suggestions of wherethere might be concerns
ldquoWhat is advantageous is that this data is available on a daily basis so you donrsquot have to wait for awhole year for datardquo
Will Naylor the QAArsquos director of colleges and alternative providers said that while online datawere ldquounlikely to supersede the need for formal measuresrdquo of standards ldquothey may giveuniversities and colleges more opportunities for organisational learning and improving thestudent experiencerdquo
But Mr Naylor added ldquoFirst we need to do more work including to assess whether studentswould accept the use of feedback data for this purposerdquo
