Was it a love for food that led you to photography, or a love for photography that led you to food?Actually, I was a photographer before I started food blogging. But I guess
I have been a foodie from birth. I started with landscape photography
when I bought my first Canon 300N film camera for my trip to the
Himalayas. It wasn’t until I started the food blog that I got my first
digital camera – a Canon 350D – and became more specialized in food
photography.
Beyond documentation, what do you hope to reveal about the food you photograph? The essence of food photography is to capture that emotion felt when you
first saw the particular dish. It could be a sliver of succulent bacon or the
sizzling of a steak. The best food photos are those that would make the
viewer feel the way you did and start salivating.
What are some of the elements that define a good food image?Translucency and sheen are very important elements in food. People enjoy
food that is juicy rather than dry. That juiciness is often expressed as a
shiny surface on a steak, say. In order to capture that, the lighting needs
to come from the back rather than the front. With light coming from the
back, you will also be able to capture the translucency of a prawn’s shell
or a potato crisp, which gives the impression of crunchiness.
How do your shooting techniques vary with the different sorts of cuisine you shoot? My shooting techniques vary more with the lighting conditions. As a food
blogger, sometimes we don’t get to choose the time we eat. I usually
like to shoot during the day, but some restaurants are open only in the
evenings. So I have to vary my shooting technique to suit the conditions.

INTERVIEWINTERVIEW
What’s in the Photographer’s Bag?
I use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II with the Canon
EF 24mm-70mm f2.8L lens. This lens is extremely
useful to me because most of my shots are taken
at the 70mm focal length between f2.8 and f4.5.
How important is food styling? Please share some of your techniques.I generally do very simple styling only. Unlike
food photography for advertising, in food
blogging, you capture food that you will
eventually eat. So it has to look real, not
perfect. So I do simple things like arranging
the prawns on top of a plate of noodles in order
to have a point of focus, or I add some extra
garnish. That is about all the styling I do.
What are the most challenging aspects of food photography? How do you address these challenges?I think my greatest challenge is how to make a
photo taken at a dirty hawker centre with only a
handheld camera and a flash look like it’s been
taken in a studio. Most of the time I am at the
mercy of the lighting conditions, and there is
also a lack of props and suitable background.
So over the years I have developed techniques
to compensate. For example, I might use one
hand to pick up some noodles with a pair of
chopsticks and use my other hand to hold
my DSLR. With such shots, the hand and
chopsticks become the background while
the noodles are your point of focus in the
foreground.
How important is lens choice and lighting to food photography? For food photography, you need a fast lens with
a large aperture in order to get a shallow depth
of field. Food always looks better with a nice [...]

Canon Introduces The World’s Fastest Full-Frame DSLR
It doesn’t happen every often, but once in a very great while a camera comes along and
changes everything. Such is the Canon EOS-1D X, the culmination of a technological evolution that
redefines the standards of professional photography.
Unveiled on 18 October, the EOS-1D X boasts a full-frame 35mm 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor
and is driven by the next-generation Dual DIGIC 5+ imaging processor. The Dual DIGIC 5+ is an
incredible 17-times faster than the current DIGIC 4 processor, and powers ultra-high-speed shooting
– up to 14frames per second – while supporting unprecedented image quality, even at the highest
ISO speeds.
But record-breaking speed is only one of many facets of this amazing camera. Look for more on
the game-changing EOS-1D X in next the next issue of Buzz!
Professional Photography Will Never Be The Same
bokeh (blurred area outside the depth of field)
as it is usually viewed at arm’s length. When
you look at anything at that distance with your
eyes, there will be background blur. So a lens
capable of shooting at f2.8 to f4.5 will be able to
reproduce what the eye naturally sees, making
your photo look more natural.
Is it possible to capture good food images with a compact camera rather than a DSLR?I have used my Canon PowerShot S95 to take
food photos before. It does a good job in
situations when I am unable to bring my DSLR
along. The images are sharp and the quality is
very good. So, with a bit of post processing,
they can also be used for the blog.
What are some common mistakes people make when shooting food? Most people using compact cameras make
the mistake of taking shots with wide-angle
distortion. Compacts are designed to take
general shots. So when the camera is turned
on, it is set at wide angle since most people will
be taking landscape photos. At this setting,
the camera needs to be placed very close to
the food, and this causes wide-angle distortion.
What you should do is to zoom in first, and then
take the shot at around arm’s length from your
dish.
What are your thoughts on the increasing popularity of food photography, particularly through blogging and social media?I think it is only natural that people want to
document what they eat because food is very
personal and links us with other people and
special occasions. Since you need to eat three
times a day, there are three opportunities for you
to take some photos daily. And the great thing
is that food never moves (unless you are eating
live lobster) so it is an easy subject to capture.
What advice would you give to an aspiring food photographer?Take lots of photos and keep at it until you are

happy with your pictures. But at the end of
the day, you still need to enjoy the food! That

over what you are about to eat will eventually

Dinner at your favorite restaurant. Dancing
at your favorite club. You want to capture and
share these great memories, but can your
camera handle such low light levels?
The S100 features the new 12 megapixel
high-sensitivity CMOS sensor, working in
tandem with the DIGIC 5 imaging processor
to deliver exceptional low-light shooting
capabilities. Its superlative 24-120mm lens

even in low-light conditions. Even high-speed
sequences are easily captured in full resolution
with the High Speed Burst feature, up to 8
frames at an impressive 9.6 frames per second!
Sometimes there’s so much going that only
a movie can capture it. The S100 is ready with
Full HD movie capabilities and superb stereo
sound. Another useful feature is the built-in
GPS, which records the longitude, latitude and
time for every photo or movie.
You never know when your next precious
memory will come along. But with the compact
PowerShot S100, you can be confident of
capturing natural, beautifully detailed images in
challenging low-light conditions – without flash

The Ideal Illumination For Wide-Angle Shooting
For those times when you’d like additional illumination from your PowerShot, the new HF-DC2
High-Power Flash is an excellent solution. It provides wider flash coverage – supporting cameras
with a wide-angle focal length of up to 24mm – so even the edges of your images are properly
lit. It automatically fires in sync with the camera’s built-in flash, increasing the effective range to
approximately 30 feet. What’s more, the HF-DC2 can be mounted on a tripod, hand held or attached
to the camera with the mounting bracket.

Style is important. People care about how they’re perceived and
what kind of image they project. The IXUS 230 HS not only makes it
easy to capture beautiful images, it’s also serves as an expression of
your own personal style.
Available in six fashionable colors, the IXUS 230 HS is a mere
22.1mm, yet this 12.1-megapixel powerhouse features an 8x optical
zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle shooting capabilities. You can
record Full HD Movies and view everything on the 3.0-inch wide-
angle viewer. What’s more, Intelligent IS keeps both still shots and
movies sharp and steady – even when you’re panning.
The night is alive with memorable moments, but lighting can
be a challenge. The stylish IXUS 230 HS features Canon’s advanced
HS System, which captures detailed, low-noise images in low-
light conditions. Colors are naturally vivid, and both subject and
background are properly exposed.
The IXUS 230 HS gives you everything you’d ever want in a
compact camera: beauty, brains and the ability to express yourself
anytime, night or day.
