Emittance Scanners for P2IT

• Fast, accurate transverse emittance measurements critical for

commissioning and quantifying the operation of the warm front-end of

PIP-II

• Emittance measurements for P2IT LEBT utilizes a Allison style emittance

scanner

– Fairly well proven and studied at different laboratories

• Choice of emittance measurement device in P2IT MEBT was not a clear

cut a choice

– Quad scans with profile measurements

• Ok but rms only, no phase space

– Slit-slit scanner or slit-profile scanner

• Phase space measurement but fairly slow

– Allison scanner??

• Has never been done at MeV energies

– High beam power material damage

– “Stiff” beam difficult to bend

Summary

• First(?) high-energy Allsion-style emittance scanner has been

designed, constructed, commissioned and is making beam

measurements

• Calibration of scanner looks good

– Position and angle

• Many measurements taken of 2.1 MeV beam under a variety

of beam conditions – for future talk

– Used extensively for last two week of beam operations

• Special thanks to Matt Alvarez (Mech Eng) who's hard work

made this instrument possible

• Also thanks to all the work by Instrumentation, Mechanical

and Alignment departments and also all of the PIP2IT

department
