Hugh C. Irish was a Paterson grocer in 1860 but was so moved by the issues facing
our divided nation that he sold his store and enlisted for the Union Army. His story
became legend and encouraged so many others to enlist that Irish was awarded the
rank of Captain. On Sept. 17, 1862, he led his troops near Sharpsburg, Maryland in
the Battle of Antietam, the first major battle in the Civil War to take place on Northern
soil. It was the bloodiest, single-day battle in American history with about 23,000
casualties—and the Paterson grocer was among the dead.
Honoring Passaic County’s Civil War Veterans
is an exhibit at Lambert Castle, which displays a
collection of artifacts assembled from over 80 years
of donations. Presented by the Passaic County
Historical Society (PCHS), visitors will see
clothing, decorative arts, official documents,
Mathew Brady photographs, a death mask of
General Ulysses S. Grant and a list of names of
Passaic County residents who served in the War.
Displayed through Oct. 2 from noon to 4 pm,
Wed. to Sun., at Lambert Castle, a 19th century
mansion at 3 Valley Rd., Paterson, at the
Clifton/Paterson border. PCHS is a private,
membership-supported, non-profit which maintains
