Irish was a Paterson grocer in 1860 but was so moved by the issues facing our divided nation that he sold his store and enlisted for the Union Army. His story became legend and encouraged so many others to enlist that Irish was awarded the rank of Captain. On Sept. 17, 1862, he led his troops near Sharpsburg, Maryland in the Battle of Antietam, the first major battle in the Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest, single-day battle in American history with about 23,000 casualties—and the Paterson grocer was among the dead. Honoring Passaic County’s Civil War Veterans is an exhibit at Lambert Castle, which displays a collection of artifacts assembled from over 80 years of donations. Presented by the Passaic County Historical Society (PCHS), visitors will see clothing, decorative arts, official documents, Mathew Brady photographs, a death mask of General Ulysses S. Grant and a list of names of Passaic County residents who served in the War. Displayed through Oct. 2 from noon to 4 pm, Wed. to Sun., at Lambert Castle, a 19th century mansion at 3 Valley Rd., Paterson, at the Clifton/Paterson border. Blues Rocker Jerome Mykietyn brings his band TheReclamators to the Rosen Theatre at the YM/YWHA of

North Jersey in Wayne on Sept. 18 at 7 pm. Tickets are

$20. Special guests include veteran bluesman Robert Ross

and Jerome’s son Jeremy of The Benjamins on drums.

Mykietyn has come full circle with the release of his blues

album, Sing It, White Boy! with observations on global

warming, homelessness, the economy and love’s rejection.

Mykietyn had his first single release (vinyl) in 1963 and for

the next six years he turned out 15 singles. Find out more

The Ringwood Friends of Music presents The AntaraTrio with Harold Jones on flute, Ashley Horne on violin,

and Erasmia Voukelatos on piano, in a concert featuring

masterpieces by Telemann, Schubert, Chaminade,

Dutilleux, as well as spirituals in classical arrangements.

The free concert on Sept. 25 at 8 pm is at the Community

Presbyterian Church, 145 Carletondale Rd., Ringwood.

The New Legacy Concert Series, now in its 10th season,

features American roots music and brings nationally

touring artists to northern Passaic County. Innovative

acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke appears on Oct. 9 at 5

pm and is followed by Sierra Hull on Nov. 6 at 2 pm. The

young mandolin player has been hailed as “bluegrass’ few

full-fledged virtuosic instrumentalist/singer/songwriters,

and one who’s gracefully grown into her gifts.” The

Ringwood Public Library is at 30 Cannici Dr., Ringwood.

The Garden State Opera (GSO) presents Gaetano

Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at the Caldwell College

Student  Center Auditorium (120 Bloomfield Ave,

Caldwell) on Oct. 21, at 11 am and on Oct. 23 at 4 pm.

GSO will also offer  an open rehearsal with a reading of the

opera with cast and orchestra at the San Giuseppe Santa

Croce Camerina Society (131 Wagaraw Rd.,  Hawthorne)

on Oct. 19 at 7 pm.   The opera will be performed in Italian

with English supertitles and staged with a chamber

orchestra. Tickets at Caldwell College are $12, while a free

will donation is requested at the Hawthorne rehearsal

The Ringwood Manor Association ofthe Arts hosts the 46th Annual Fall Open

Juried Exhibition at the Barn Gallery in historic Ringwood

Manor State Park. The show is Sept. 14 through Oct. 19.

Blue State Productions, in residence at St. Peter’s

Episcopal Church in Clifton, is staging For Colored Girls

on Nov. 5-19. The production is a series of 20 poems,

referred collectively as a choreopoem, performed by a

cast of nameless women, each known only by a color. The

story is being told through various colors or characters

that ultimately reflect one woman’s life experience. Info

Destination New Jersey People &Places is a group exhibit at the

Clifton Arts Center which seeks to

educate the public about people and

places of the Garden State. This show

(sample pictured) also includes a

visual tour relating to landmarks that

have helped to shape our state’s

unique identity. The exhibit will be

displayed from Sept. 21 until Oct. 29.

A reception open to the public will be

held on Sept. 24 from 1 to 4 pm. The

Clifton Arts Center is within the

Sculpture Park on the grounds of the

Clifton Municipal Complex near the

The Poetry Center at Passaic County

Community College has been awarded

a $10,000 grant from the National

Endowment for the Arts (NEA). With

this funding, the Poetry Center will

provide free poetry workshops to

Passaic County seniors and publish

an anthology of their work.

The winner and finalists of theannual Paterson Fiction Prize for2011 were announced by the Poetry

Center at PCCC. The first prize of

$1,000 was awarded to Danielle

Evans of Washington D.C. for her

book Before You Suffocate Your

Own Fool Self (Riverhead Books,

New York, NY). The judge

described Evans’ book as, “a

masterpiece in authenticity and

immediacy.” The Paterson Fiction

Prize is given annually for a novel or

collection of short stories published
