“Building a Better

NON NOBIS SOLUM

FAREWELL FROM JO SOOTHILL It is nearly 5 years since I came to Mareeba State High School to take up the principalship. It was a big step for me to leave my family and friends to come North again but one that I do not regret. I found the community welcomed me and this assisted me greatly in my role. The National Partnership gave me the opportunity and flexibility to make some changes to better support our young people. It also allowed for greater professional growth for my staff.

I need to thank staff for their support and willingness to change. I found they go the extra mile for the students often with no thanks in return. I am grateful for the support of parents, businesses and community organisations. I understand giving up time to help the school can be difficult but every hour counts and when you get involved, the return for your children and other children multiplies exponentially.

Lastly I would like to thank the students for making my time so enjoyable. Overall I found friendly and helpful young people who are generally tolerant of others. I feel our future will be in good hands if they keep these qualities into adulthood.

I have mixed feelings about moving on but as many of you know, my home is in Brisbane and my husband will retire in the near future. I will be taking up the principalship at Runcorn State High School on Brisbane’s Southside. It will be good to go home but I will miss Mareeba. I look forward to seeing the future successes of Mareeba State High School students and thank you for allowing me to lead such a wonderful school.

Warm regards,

Jo Soothill

PRINCIPALS WORDS I would like to introduce myself to the Mareeba community and say how privileged I feel to be appointed as your Principal. As a long term Far Northern resident, I am thrilled at the opportunities provided by the school and look forward to the great successes Mareeba will have.

Starting at a new school, I am spending my initial time getting to know the community. I have spent time talking to local businesses about perceptions of the school and how we can work closely together. I will continue to do this over the remainder of the term.

It was great meeting with the student leaders to get their views. The way the students have shown respect in their conversations with me in class and in the playground has been heartening. I have enjoyed walking the school and meeting students, getting their views on life at Mareeba SHS.

I am amazed by the outstanding offerings at Mareeba SHS. In my first three days, I have met a number of passionate staff who provide a great selection of opportunities for students. There is a great basis to ensure the school is heading in a positive direction.

Like any school, there will always be things to work on. One of the first tasks will be around reviewing the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support and the Responsible Behaviour Plan. This will involve collaboration between students, staff, parents and community members. Over the next few weeks a team will be put together to review the SWPBS and the Responsible Behaviour Plan.

Mareeba SHS has a strong reputation for the Sports awards which are on Friday 16th. The quality of speakers that come to this event are fantastic. Andrew Symonds is certainly an interesting sportsman and will be a great addition to the speaking ranks for the Sports Awards.

I look forward to meeting members of our school community commencing with the P&C meeting on Tuesday. The feedback is important to me to ensure we have a well performing school. I will continue to provide feedback to the community through our parent net email and Facebook (which I am just about to start using).

Once again, I look forward to interacting with the Mareeba community.

Regards

Northern Gulf Resource Management Group Ltd together with Mareeba Dis-trict Fruit and Vegetables Growers Asso-ciation and Mareeba State High School has come together once again to acknowledge the vital role women play in primary industries and rural commu-nities. The event due to be held on Thursday, 15th October will create a great opportunity to get together, net-work and celebrate the immense contri-bution that rural women bring to Aus-tralia’s economy and their local commu-nities.

Jess Fealy, member of the events com-mittee said: “This year we have been lucky to partner with Mareeba State High School for our event which will focus on inspiring both our young high school girls and rural women to be inno-vative and creative leaders in their cho-sen fields. There is lots to celebrate about being rural women– so we invite all women in our community to come” For Ticket bookings http://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/resourcing-women-of-the-north-international-day-of-rural-women-tickets-18664100828

2015 CAMBODIAN CULTURAL EXCHANGE Over the September School Holidays, a group of 15 Year 12 stu-dents and 2 Teachers boarded a plane headed for Siem Reap, Cambodia. After an 8 hour stop-over in Singapore and a special breakfast with the Orang-utans at the Singapore Zoo, we were welcomed into Siem Reap by our Tour Guides and our Tuk Tuk drivers from the New Hope School. We spent the next 10 days teaching English to the poor and under privileged students at the New Hope School and the Orphans from The O.D.A . Orphanage. Our students formed friendships with the Cambodian students and it was inspiring to watch our students from Mareeba High School, teaching English to the Cambodian children.

We used our fundraising money to purchase rice, oils, spices, sauces, eggs, dried fish and toiletries, which we bagged up and hand delivered to 55 families from the poorest areas of Siem Reap. It was an extremely emotional day, but well worth seeing the joy and happiness that we were able to bring to the Cambodian people. One old Cambodian lady cried as she announced that we were angels and how lucky her village was that we were there to help them. A vision that all of us will not forget.

We got up early and travelled to Angkor Wat Temple to watch the most breathtaking sunrise and were fortunate to watch the Apsara dancers and a local circus. We were taught how to cook tradi-tional Khmer food by our friends from one of the villages and we were also shown and taught the history of the Killing fields and the Kings Palace in Phnom Penh. Our Tour Guide, Sokhon, educated us about the brutal history of Cambodia and how the Cambodian people were mercilessly killed or tortured, which made our trip so much more meaningful.

The food in Cambodia was very different to home, but we all enjoyed it. Some of the students even tried eating fried crickets, frogs, silk worms and tarantulas. But Mrs Daly and I stuck to the Fish Amok and the Cambodian curries.

We spent many nights bartering in the markets and cruising the streets of Siem Reap in our Tuk Tuk’s. We made many new friends and have experienced some things that will change our lives for-ever. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of myself and Mrs Daly, to thank the 15 beauti-ful students who travelled with us to Cambodia for this amazing experience. As always, our students made a great impression on the people we met along the way, and have helped to improve the lives of so many of the beautiful, Cambodian people. Tim Ralph—Teacher
