A major determinant today and in the future
• The latest evidence suggests that climate change will cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year, before the middle of the current century
• There are other important potential health risks: migration, food systems breakdown, ecosystems and biodiversity deterioration, economic losses, etc
• Health systems – too do create an environment impact – which directly and indirectly affects health
• 4.2% of European CO2 emissions = 15 000 deaths from cardiorespiratory diseases
9th EIONET Workshop15–16 June, 2015
Strengthening health community engagement
• Builds on mandates through the UNFCCC text, and WHA resolution
• Promoted a more even balance between building health resilience to climate, and gaining health benefits from mitigation policies.
• Called for a partnership platform to enhance coordination, information sharing and synergies between partners working to implement the goals agreed through UNFCCC and World Health Assembly.

9th EIONET Workshop15–16 June, 2015
Key messages for climate negotiators
Focuses on:
• Mitigation costs can be offset through health co-benefits
• Structure follows the main pillars of the negotiating text: mitigation, adaptation, finance, technology development and transfer, capacity building
• What can negotiator do:• Be informed
• Advocate
• Promote health in mitigation
• Promote dialogue
• Lead by example
9th EIONET Workshop15–16 June, 2015
Development of climate services• Stronger role of WHO within the Global
Framework for Climate Services (GFCS)
• Development of a health specific climate services within the EUPORIAS project: a climate-driven mortality model for heat.
