    Mondays, June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 & July 6, 20155:30 to 7:00 p.m. 4th fl. Clare roomMonday, July 6 - Remembrance MassFacilitator: Fr. Joe Quinn, OFM, Grief MinistryRequirement: Attendance at all six sessions.Limited enrollment.Pre-registrations required.

Grieving is the most misunderstood and neglectedgrowth process a person can go through. Formany years religious and spiritual leaders havelooked at loss as an opportunity for spiritualdevelopment. Yet our modern life process hasshaped our understanding that moving through thehealing journey of grief has become so private andmisunderstood that it has become a taboo subject.

Our American culture has succeeded intransforming the reality of death into a foreign andalienation experience. A number of logical reasonscan be advanced to account for the death-denyingsociety we live in. There has been a change infamily patterns due to greater mobility and this hascontributed to the breakdown of the extendedfamily and has shifted the focus to the nuclearfamily. Thus the absence of close familialsupport is a missing link for so many. The grievingfeel even more alone with no one to turn to nor toshare their pain with. It was once said that a joyshared is twice the joy a grief shared is to havehalf the grief.

There is an opportunity for this support group to bea safe place where people can share their lossand not feel uncomfortable about it. This group willhave a limited number of participants as well as atime frame of 6 sessions with the conclusion ofMass of Remembrance. Hopefully, we will providesome of the necessary methods of learning how tolive life without the one they love. We believe thatSt. Anthonys can provide you with that safe placeto share your pain and your loss and begin thejourney of healing the painful process of grief.

It is imperative that participants attend all sixconsecutive sessions of the group.

St. Anthony Shrine offers parental and sponsorpreparation for those parents wishing to have theirinfant or young child baptized here at the Shrineand welcomed into our worshiping community.Preparatory sessions and Baptisms will beavailable about six times per year (approximatelyevery other month). It is anticipated that theBaptisms ordinarily will be on the last Sunday ofthe month (if liturgically feasible) at the regularSunday 12:30 p.m. Mass. Upcoming dates forBaptisms are May 31 & June 28.Baptisms for Latin@ infants will be at the SundaySpanish Mass. Reading I: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48Responsorial Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4

    Reading II: 1 John 4:7-10Gospel: John 15:9-17

    Gone for Good?

imagine the emotional turmoil inside the disciples. First he was here then he was gone. Then he was here again. And then he was gone for good.Jesus. First he was here then he was gone. They livedwith Jesus in his public life and they loved it. Theythought it would last forever. But abruptly he wasgone. They were not at all prepared for theenormity of his torture and killing, the destructionof their lives, of their friend and their Lord. Gone, gone, gone, gone. Then he was here again. We know how hardhis resurrection was for the apostles. They doubtedit and rejected it, even as the women welcomed itwith full hearts. he appeared many times andkindly helped his followers to accept the fact thathe was alive again. And then he was gone for good. When theyhad gotten used to his new presence, guess what. The Ascension took place.* This presents theobvious question. Does the story really end withJesus gone, gone, gone, ascended to heaven? Thepoint of God's taking flesh had been to show howcompletely present he always is to us, living in ourmaterial world. So now he has absented himselfforever? Are we back to where we started?you and i must really look for the answer, becauseit contains the entire Christian reality. We can do itusing the readings for this Sunday. The First reading is a continuation of Jesus

frequent talks about how he will send the holySpirit to us (Paraclete, Teacher, Comforter), after hehas ascended to the Father. All who believe andwho open their hearts will receive the Spirit.Stay with this line of reasoning. What is the Spirit?is it simply a dose of grace that we receive orearn in order to be holy? Or that Jesus and the

Spirituality of the ReadingsFather send to give us a break? Or a help? Orsome kind of power coming from God?no.Listen well: the holy Spirit is:

God.not a representative of God, not a dove that

descends on us, or even a point of fire over ourheads. it is the complete, true reality of God. Andit is marked by Jesus' entire life, death andresurrection. The Spirit quietly makes us able to say yes to faith, but not by brutalizing us or overriding us. TheSecond reading and the Gospel are all about whati call respectful love. i define it as that lovewhich never over-powers us but always respectsour choice. rather than a dictator, the Spirit wantsto be a companion in our lives, respecting our self, not contradicting it.So Jesus is with us by means of the presence of hisSpirit in us. he hopes we will accept the offer ofthis Spirit. if we do, our souls mingle with Godsown reality and we become new flesh for theincarnate God.This is called the mystical body of Christ on earth.you reply, well great, but why am i so weak inbelief, so far from Christ, so prone to sin? Thisholy Spirit must be pretty anemic.no, and here again is the reason. The Spirit always waits, waits, waits for you toreceive Jesus' life. Jesus is not gone, he is inside us,knocking at our inner door. We can say no. But wecan also say yes with our lives.Through respectful love.___________________*The Church provides an embarrassment of richness in the readingsthis week. Some few dioceses (the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, hartford, new york, newark, Philadelphia, and Omaha) celebratethe feast of Ascension on Thursday, and therefore on Sunday will usethe readings from the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Most others have theAscension feast on Sunday and use the Ascension readings instead ofthose from the Seventh Sunday. in either case there are a number ofpossible second readings for Ascension. So let us simply talk hereabout the Ascension itself.
