Here’s a question.If you were a 21-year-old actor suddenly

thrust into the spotlight, would you wantone of your co-stars to compare you toMeryl Streep?

Now think about it for a minute. Sure,it’s flattering. Wow, it would feel nice. Butthat’s a lot of pressure. It’s not the kind ofpressure that comes with being nominatedfor an Oscar, being followed by paparazzior even reading about yourself in amagazine. It’s worse.

It’s pressure to deliver.Dennis Quaid laid the Meryl Streep comparison on his Smart People

co-star Ellen Page when he told Famous writer Bob Strauss, “Ellen Pageis a movie star…. I actually think she’s like Meryl Streep.”

If — like most people — you’ve only seen Page in Juno and hervarious red carpet interviews, you may think that comparison ismisplaced. Truth is, the real-life Page seems pretty similar to hercharming, smartass character in Juno. And great acting is aboutbecoming something that you’re not.

But dig back a little deeper in Page’s 10-year career and you’llfind several roles that are utterly “smartass” free. These are largelytragic parts in movies like An American Crime, the true story of abrutally abused girl in 1960s Indiana, or Hard Candy, where sheplays a single-minded 14-year-old out to get even with a pedophile.

In “Hot Out of Halifax,” page 32, Page explains why she’s excitedto play “an extremely bitchy, arrogant Young Republican” in nextmonth’s Smart People, a character she says is “extremely differentfrom Juno.”

Charlize Theron has proven she’s at her best when portraying acharacter nothing like herself. The former model won an Oscarplaying a grizzly serial killer in Monster and was nominated for asecond as North Country’s down-and-out coal miner. This monthyou’ll see her in another less-than-glam role — a neglectful motherwho abandons her little girl in Sleepwalking. Read “Getting Ugly,”page 40, to find out why Theron’s attracted to these harsh roles.

In “Running the Show,” page 44, formerFriends star David Schwimmer talks aboutshooting his directorial debut, Run, Fat Boy, Runin London, and on a shoestring budget.

And on page 36 you’ll find “Who’s Who,”our interview with Steve Carell aboutvoicing the Mayor of Who-ville in the latestDr. Seuss story to make it to the big screen,Horton Hears a Who! —MARNI WEISZ

THIS MONTH’SQUESTION:Speed Racer promises totake movie cars to a newlevel. But if you could makeone vehicle from a pastmovie your permanent ride, what would it be?Look for the answers to thisquestion in the May issue.Responses may be edited forlength and clarity.

We’re starting a brandnew feature and wantyou to be a part of it.

BE PUBLISHED IN

FAMOUS!

Rampant prostitution, typhus, cholera and blood.Lots of blood. Who wouldn’t wantto spend part of their vacationback in Sweeney Todd’sVictorian London?

Now you can, and it’sabsolutely free — except forthe plane fare, hotel and food.

Warner Brothers, the studiobehind Tim Burton’s SweeneyTodd: The Demon Barber ofFleet Street, has teamedwith audio walk specialistsSoundmap to create the“Sweeney Todd’s London”

audio tour, which isfree to download atTimeout.com/SweeneyTodd.

Starting at the River Thames, where the scorned barberreturned (singing, apparently)to his vile London, the tourconsists of 17 stopsin the Fleet Street area, allof which are significant toTodd’s story of revenge, slashedjugulars and human meatpies. The narrator would likeyou to believe Todd (playedby Johnny Depp in the movie)really existed, and he may have.

Thomas Peckett Prest first wroteabout Todd in 1846, and Prestwas often inspired by crimestories he read in The Times.

The narration is interspersedwith music from the movie andsound bites from Burton, Deppand Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Mrs. Lovett, maker

of meat pies. The downloadalso includes a PDF map toprint off before you go.

Or, if you’re not planning tobe in London anytime soon youcan do what we did. Downloadit at work, put the headphoneson, shut your eyes and dream.—MW

WALK WITH

TODD

No, you’re not looking at Batman’ssecret lair, but rather the basement

of a private home in Palm Beach,California, that’s been transformedinto the Batcave Home Theatre bythe Surrey, B.C.-based Elite HomeTheater Seating company.

This 30' x 40' theatre, which cost$500,000 (U.S.) to construct — andthat’s without any A/V equipment —seats 12 people. The cave walls aremade from a foam product that’sacoustically efficient and there arespeakers hidden in the stalactiteshanging from the ceiling. The designersused the Bat Suit as their inspirationfor the sleek black chairs, and sinceBatman loves his gizmos, the theatre’sA/V equipment is not hidden away butleft out in the open. —IR

TURNING POINT:FALL OF LIBERTYPC, PS3, XBOX 360In America, the 1950s are fondlyrecalled as a time of peace andprosperity, when life was happyand predictable. In Turning Point:Fall of Liberty, however, thingshappen a little differently.

Set in 1953, this first-personshooter imagines an alternatehistory where the U.S. neverenters the Second World War...

until the war enters the States. As construction workerDan Carson watches from a half-built skyscraper, a fleet of Naziwarships takes New Yorkharbour, and waves of giantZeppelins darken the sky. WithGerman paratroopers assaultingthe city block by block, Carsonbarely escapes, but theBig Apple isn’t so lucky — it fallsquickly as the invasion grows. And videogame or not, it’s

chilling to see a huge scarletswastika banner hanging fromthe Statue of Liberty.

Playing as the street-smart,but otherwise regular guy,Carson, your first task is just tosurvive the chaos, but you soonjoin the American Resistance, using guerilla tactics against theoccupying Nazis. Of course, the Third Reich was no pushover, and after handily defeatingEurope it has spent the last

decade developing powerfulnew weapons — not spaceshipsand lasers but the technologiesthat were on its drawing boardsat the end of the real WWII, likejet engines and rocket launchers.

So you’re outgunned andoutmanned, but you make upfor it with your knowledge ofthe local “terrain” — subwaytunnels, rooftops, bodegas —and desperation. For example, short of weapons and ammo, you’ll engage in a lot more hand-to-hand combat than the usualshooters, including niftygrappling features and usingenemies as human shields.

In most heroic, invasion-themed games the ultimate goalis to single-handedly win thewar, but in Turning Point yoursights are set a little lower.Carson and his comrades justwant to stay alive and maybe, just maybe, strike a few largersymbolic blows to inspire theirbesieged nation. Can theydo it? Well, if there’s one tribe ofhumans you shouldn’t messwith it’s a bunch of pissed-offNew Yorkers.

DARK SECTORPC, PS3, XBOX 360While infiltrating a secret lab in a crumblingEastern Bloc country, ruthless agent Hayden Tennois infected by a bio-weapon that turns parts of hisbody into metal and allows him to morph intodifferent combat forms. Even worse, thebio-weapon has mutated everyone else into

huge, violently insane metallo-creatures.Now the military thinks Tenno is a monster, and

the monsters think he’s human — a prettyconvenient set-up for a kill-’em-all action andshooting game. And what kills they are, since ourhero’s main weapon is his glaive — a pizza-sizedthrowing star now growing out of his right hand. But there’s another variable, along with thesesuperpowers our hero is growing something evenless welcome: a conscience.

GOD OF WAR:CHAINS OF OLYMPUS PSPThis prequel tracks the trials of the brutal (butoddly lovable) warrior Kratos during his decade ofservitude to the gods. He’ll have new magic andweapons, but it’s still all about hacking andslashing the nastiest creatures of Greek mythologyall across — and below — the ancient world.

Gamers have good reason to be suspicious ofepic console games reappearing on handhelds, butthe God of War series exists in a different reality. The PS2 versions are that system’s smoothest andbest-looking games, yet Chains of Olympusrecreates the same dramatic camera angles andepic set pieces despite the PSP’s four-inch screen. So to update The Bard: Cry havoc and let slip thegods of war!

Who could have predicted thatAmerica’s newest teen sweet-heart would be a pregnant punk

played by an iconoclastic Canadian? But Ellen Page’s lead role in the surprise

indie smash Juno has turned the 5’1”Halifax native, and still resident, intoHollywood’s It Girl.

Page has earned an Oscar nomination, won praise for the role literally left andright (conservatives have lauded Juno’sdecision to have her baby and put it upfor adoption, liberals more tentativelyappreciate that the girl makes all ofher own choices) and even been linkedto a Spears scandal, with some absurdlyaccusing Juno of having an influence onJamie Lynn’s pregnancy.

Can higher Teen Queen status possiblybe achieved?

For Page, who just turned 21, it’s allbeside the point. She is far too earthy,serious-minded and, well, Canadian towant exploding fame to affect her much.

But she’s also realistic enough to realizethat it may.

“It does in the sense that I’m away alot,” says Page, who insists she’ll keep

living in Halifax. “Other than that, not somuch. I’m obviously still the same. Butwe’ll probably be able to tell more soon. We’ll see what happens.”

It will be instructive to see if Page’ssharp, offbeat humour proves as popularwith audiences of her next indie release,Smart People, which revolves around asad, dysfunctional family, and debutedat the Sundance Film Festival in January. The film is scheduled to open acrossNorth America on April 14th.

“I play a character who is extremelydifferent from Juno, which is exciting,”Page enthuses during a recent interviewat the Los Angeles Four Seasons Hotel.“She’s an extremely bitchy, arrogantYoung Republican. It was a blast to shoot. It’s not a political movie, though, more aslice of life. It was produced by MichaelLondon who produced Sideways, anddirected by a wonderful director namedNoam Murro. It’s kind of a dramedy, orwhatever you want to call it.”

One person who’s certain Page willcontinue to be a sensation is Smart Peopleco-star Dennis Quaid, who plays her self-absorbed, college professor father.

“Ellen Page is a movie star,” Quaiddeclares. “She’s an incredible actress. Iactually think she’s like Meryl Streep. You’re going to hear stuff about her.”

Streep, however, followed a rigorouscourse of formal training. It all began kindof off-handedly for Page, when a TVmovie shoot, Pit Pony, came to Halifaxlooking for a tween girl to put on a horse.

“When I was 10 I just kind of randomlygot asked to audition for a CBC movieof the week by a local casting directorbecause I was short and had brown hair orwhatever,” she says with a shrug. “I endedup being in that, and it was supposed to bethis one neat little experience, but thenthat turned into a TV show, which led tosomething else and that led to somethingelse. And now I’m in the Four Seasons!”

It took a while for the young actor tofigure out that she was also an artist.Page’s filmography is filled with edgyindie titles — Hard Candy, Mouth to Mouth,The Tracey Fragments, An American Crime —all of which cover alarming territory.

Not that she’s above a little lowbrowcomedy or a good effects movie. Pagemade the requisite, multi-episode

Then, as I con-tinued to work and started playing moremature roles that required depth andpassion and some sort of emotionaltranscendence, it began to connect. That was about when I was 15 or 16.Probably the first film I shot that had aquality of depth was called Marion Bridge,Molly Parker starred in it.

“It was almost a moment that’s, like, inexplicable that happened. It was kindof, ‘Oh, I wanna feel that again!’ And Ijust wanted to learn more and take itmuch more seriously.”

Ellen’s mom and dad, a teacher anda graphic designer respectively, wereapparently the perfect stage parents: i.e.,not like the stereotypes at all.

“My parents just want me to remainbalanced and healthy and stay the samegrounded human being that I am,” shesays. “They’re incredibly supportive butthey never push me. It always is justabout my personal being, and I adorethem for that. It’s a perfect kind of asituation. We just trust each other.”

Between acting gigs, the teenaged Pagewould try to keep her life as normal as shecould. Wait, make that better than normal.

“Myhighschool [was]calledShambhalaand it was started by Buddhists,” she ex-plains. “They don’t teach you Buddhism, but the way the school works stems fromthe philosophy. It’s about openness. Itwas one of those weird situations whereyou didn’t feel like anyone was judginganyone. It was about harvesting individ-uals’ desire to learn, and talking aboutand learning about whatever, not beingcensored — learning about things that, maybe, in public school, teachers wouldbe fired for.”

And though she was small, Page was atotal jock. She grew up playing a lot ofsports, soccer competitively. As she putsit, “I like being in my body.”

That active nature made her into anoutdoorsy person, and it was during aEuropean hiking trip that Page realizedthere is no place like home. It’s not thatanything bad happened; but something

just clicked, and it made her reassessNova Scotia as both a refuge fromHollywood and as something more.

“I just genuinely love it. I neverthought that’s where I would end up, butI’m feeling like it was one of the bestdecisions I’ve ever made,” she says ofkeeping Nova Scotia’s capital as herhome base. “When I was backpacking inEastern Europe — which was amazing —I also realized that, ‘My God, I love whereI’m from.’ I think being there, in a com-munity that’s just so far removed fromthe film industry, just people workingand doing their thing, it’s humbling andit keeps your feet on the ground andkeeps your perspective balanced.”

As for Canada in general, Page isproud of the nation’s progressive attrib-utes. But she knows enough about howthe world works to acknowledge that, “Asmuch as I love Canada and love that wehave access to health care and things likethat, and there are a lot of wonderfulthings, we live a comfortable lifestyle andstill live on this very imperialistic side ofthe world. To live well, bad things musthappen, and Canada isn’t some innocent,peace-crazy country, you know what Imean? I’m aware of that, and it’s some-thing I do want to be aware of. But I dolove where I’m from and I love a lot ofthe things that we stand for.”

Next up: playing a lesbian werewolfopposite Juno co-star Olivia Thirlby inJack and Diane and a beauty queen turnedroller derby bruiser in Whip It, directedby Drew Barrymore, of all people. Likewe said, Page doesn’t exactly followthe mainstream. But there was nothingmainstream about Juno until everybodyfell in love with her, either.

However huge any future project maybecome, don’t be surprised if you run

into Ellen Page, just chilling out andcollecting herself on the street in Halifax.

“I definitely need time between roles,”she explains. “You need moments tobreathe and connect your feet to theground and what have you. I feel like ifyou don’t have your own individual lifethen you’re just going to burn out.”

The audition process doesn’talways involve a big dark room witha director and casting agent. Afterseeing Ellen Page in the indie filmHard Candy, Smart People directorNoam Murro liked her for the role ofoverachieving Vanessa. So the twomet not in Hollywood, but at aBurger King at the Newark Airport.Page flew in from Canada, Murrowfrom Pittsburgh. Murrow quicklyrealized she was the one, but it hadnothing to do with their conversationor the way she ate her Whopper. Ashe recalls, “I saw her small figureand frame walking towards me andI just knew in that instant that shewas the genius I was looking for.”

Sound Choice for the 2008Grammy Awards

The Hollywood trade papers paintedit as something of a reunion whenJim Carrey and Steve Carell were cast

as the lead voices in Horton Hears a Who!,the CGI adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic.

They had played opposite each otherin Bruce Almighty, with Carrey as God’svessel Bruce and Carell as Bruce’s officerival Evan. And Carell — an A-lister afterthe success of his romantic-comedyThe 40-Year-Old Virgin — inherited theless-successful sequel, Evan Almighty.

So it’s ironic (but not surprising givenhow animated films are made) that whileCarrey and Carell’s characters share

plenty of screen time, the actors nevereven saw each other while making themovie about an elephant who encoun-ters an entire race of tiny people living ona speck of dust.

“I never saw Jim Carrey once,” saysCarell during an L.A. interview lastNovember, just as his work on Horton wasdrawing to a close. “But I still have a fewmore sessions to do, so we might just runinto each other, you never know. I mustsay it’s looking really cool. They reallycaptured that Dr. Seuss look, but at thesame time it’s very three-dimensionaland feels alive. It’s going to look good.”

Of course, Seuss fans know that thetitular Horton and Carell’s character, the microscopic Mayor of tiny Who-ville,inhabit separate worlds on screen. Havingdiscovered a world of people literally athis feet (“We are HERE! We are HERE!We are HERE!”), Horton is treated like alunatic by his fellow pachyderms.

Meanwhile, the Mayor is similarly dis-believed — even by his own wife (AmyPoehler) — when he first spreads thenews that their entire universe is indanger of being crushed by elephants.

“He’s kind of an insecure mayor, giventhecircumstances,”Carell says, “I play

him with kind of a heightenedversion of my own voice.”

Tom Shadyac, the director ofboth Almightys, has suggested thatCarrey and Carell inhabit different

worlds comedically as well. Carrey, hesays, is a consummately proactive comic

actor whose characters control the action.Carell, meanwhile, is wonderfully reactive, playing best when things happen to him,his deadpan face communicating anabsurd comic sadness.

That theory certainly seems to apply toCarell’s best movie work, includingLittle Miss Sunshine, where he plays asuicidal academic confined to a vanon a dysfunctional family road trip,or Dan in Real Life, where he’s alovelorn single dad, trapped at a

raucous family reunion, suffering insilence — but sporadically acting out in

comic angst — as the woman he lovesclings to his brother’s arm.

And, of course, in his breakthroughmovie The 40-Year-Old Virgin he’s a guywho’s spent the best years of his life wait-ing for sex to happen to him. (Although,as an exception that proves the rule,Michael Scott, his Golden Globe-winningcharacter on The Office, is definitely theclueless, klutzy straw that stirs the drink.)

And to hear Carell tell it, his careerkind of “just happened” to him as well.

“I’ve way, way overshot my target,” hesays, “this target didn’t exist.

“In fact, there was absolutely nothingin my upbringing that would have pointedme to a career as an actor. My family wasnot predisposed to the arts, frankly. Myone brother is an architect, one’s an en-gineer, the other was a professional chefand now owns a landscape company.”

As for Carell, he was supposed to be alawyer, all the way from his childhoodin Concord, N.H., to Ohio’s DenisonUniversity, where the acting bug first bithim. “It was just something I enjoyeddoing. I never considered it a potentialvocation. I thought it was just a fun hobbyand extracurricular activity,” he says.

After a career crisis, and a stint as apostal worker, he took a flyer and movedto Chicago in the late 1980s, enrollingin classes with that city’s much storiedSecond City troupe.

Second City seemed, to Carell, to bewhere he belonged. He made lifelongfriends among the cast, including bestfriend Stephen Colbert, now of The ColbertReport. He quickly made his way up theranks, from Second City’s touring com-pany to its mainstage troupe to a gig as animprov instructor. Among his students:a talented young comic actor namedNancy Walls who would become his wifeand the mother of their two children.

(Fans of The Office will recognize Walls asCarol Stills, Michael Scott’s real estateagent and sort-of girlfriend for fiveepisodes early in the series.)

“It was like the graduate school of com-edy. I just found it a place where I couldfail miserably night after night and therewere no implications. That’s a very freeingexperience and you learn a lot. We triedeverything, the most outlandish charac-ters, we’d write things that were politicaland satirical. The AIDS epidemic wasnew and we did a montage about AIDSthat, in retrospect, was very heavy-handedand preachy, but it was dangerous at thetime and taboo and it was okay to try.Everything was an experiment.

“I think it also helped shape my comedyin that I became attracted to characterswho weren’t self-aware, who didn’t knowthey were funny.”

It was idyllic, but temporary. Colbertmoved to New York to join the short-livedThe Dana Carvey Show as a writer, andWalls nailed an audition to become a castmember on Saturday Night Live. Rejectedafter his own SNL audition, Carell movedto New York to be with her, and joinedColbert as a writer for Carvey.

Eventually, the lives of all three wouldintersect again when they were hired aswriter/correspondents on The Daily Showwith Jon Stewart in 1999. “It was Stephen

who got me on The Daily Show,” Carellsays. “We’d done all that work togetherand they were looking for correspondentsand he threw my name in the hat. I’llalways be grateful for that.”

Carell was a standout on The Daily Showfor six years and more than 350 episodes(often sharing “reports” and regular fea-tures with his wife) before finally leavingto take up the movie and TV offers thathad been coming his way. It was, he says,a heavy-hearted decision.

“I felt enormous trepidation leavingThe Daily Show,” he says. “They’d been sogood to me the entire time I was there. SoI kept the door open because I wasn’tsure how these other things would panout. If things hadn’t worked out, I wasassured I could have gone back. It waslike home.”

Instead, he came back a star — afeatured interview guest on the eve of therelease of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. “It wasvery cool to come back,” he says of thatnight. “I owe so much to Jon and to thatshow, it was like coming back to family. Ihave a real affection for those people.”

From his 2007-2008 release schedule(Evan Almighty, Dan in Real Life, HortonHears a Who! and the upcoming Get Smart,a movie remake of the ’60s sitcom inwhich Carell plays Agent 86 oppositeAnne Hathaway as Agent 99), you might

conclude Carell is a workaholic. But unlike many actors who approached

the season-of-the-strike by trying to fit inas much work in the first half of ’08 aspossible, Carell says he deliberately saidno to anything new until the labour situ-ation blew over.

“My wife’s like, ‘Bring it on baby, bringon the strike!’ Whatever happens, we’llprobably go back to Massachusetts andhang out for the summer,” he says of an’08 tentatively dedicated to rest andrecreation.

In fact, there may soon be a Carell-freeperiod on the screen irrespective of thelabour situation. When Walls put her owncareer on hold for the children, it was withthe proviso that the situation would even-tually reverse itself, with Carell playingMr. Mom. “We’ve talked about that, she’sbeen getting calls too. She doesn’t wantto do anything right now. We’ve got aFirst Grader and a preschooler, but it’sdefinitely something we’ve discussed.

“She’s been getting a lot of calls andinterest for auditions and parts. She’sbeen turning them down of her ownchoosing. But she knows I’m happy to[be a househusband] when she’s ready, and it’ll probably happen.”

So you win an Oscar for playing way against type. Thenyou’re supposed to cash in, right? Do big-paying projectsthat don’t necessarily tax your skills as much, with the

occasional prestige pic thrown in just to remind moviegoers (and,of course, producers) that you’re capable of the arty goods.

Unless you’re Charlize Theron. Since putting on poundageand loads of unattractive makeup for her Academy Award-winning portrayal of a serial killer in Monster, the South Africanbeauty has clearly been following her heart.

Yes, she made a sci-fi superhero movie, Aeon Flux, but it was suchan unusual take on the genre that it died on release. And, true,Theron will be seen later this year in another superhero project,Hancock, opposite none other than box-office king Will Smith.

But for the most part, Theron has been headlining, producing

or just contentedly lending her presence to movies that captureher imagination.

The one-time model claims quite persuasively that shedoesn’t care whether or not a film emphasizes or downplays herblond goddess appearance, is built around her or makes a lotof money. Just like North Country and In the Valley of Elah, herlatest release Sleepwalking — which she also produced — provesall of those points.

“Like everything that I do, it was a very initial response,”Theron says in a recent phone interview. “We’re still living in asociety where we want women to be mothers and nurturers andgirlfriends. This character wasn’t that. Though I’m never lookingfor anything specific, I do know that I get excited when I findsomething that has a little bit of ugly truth to it.”

of someone you know very well. Theron’s real-life love interest, actor Stuart Townsend, makes his directorial debut with thepolitically charged drama Battle in Seattle later this spring, andshe plays a key role.

“Working with him was amazing,” Theron says in the straight-forward, matter-of-fact way she speaks on most topics; in otherwords, not sounding too gushy. “I think people want to hear thelittle tagline or the funny thing because he’s my boyfriend. Butat the end of the day, I was incredibly impressed. I showed up asan actress and he was the director and, other than once in awhile slipping up and calling him his nickname in front of hiscrew, it was very much a working relationship. And I really, truly believe that he has incredible talents as a director.”

And no, Theron is not about to share that pet name. She is happy to point out that her apparently rarefied taste

and preference for serious subject matter should in no way beinterpreted as snobbishness.

“I want to make good movies,” she acknowledges. “I want tomake great movies. I want to make movies that make people feelsomething when they leave the theatre, and that ask a lot ofquestions.

“But I’m committed to all kinds of film,” Theron adds. “I’min Hancock; if I read something I like, it’s not genre-driven oranything for me. I thought it was a really well-written piece thatwasn’t just fluff. There was a real intelligence to it, yet it was fun. It’s smart, complicated, had a lot of conflict. I don’t see a lot ofthat come Fourth of July [Hancock’s scheduled release date].”

And while that action pic looks like the kind of surefire hit

even the most respected award winners like to add to theirrésumés, Theron sees no upside to thinking along those lines.

“Y’know, there is no recipe in this industry,” she observes.“You can ask the biggest stars that — Will Smith, Tom Hanks,Tom Cruise — there’s no recipe to knowing what’s going towork. If you’re going to sit around and try to figure that out, good luck to you. At the end of the day everybody has theirpriorities. My priority is just to do stuff that somehow gets intomy bones. There’s no way of really explaining it. It’s just some-thing that you feel and it happens and not for one second do Iever go, ‘Well, let me see; will this be a commercial success?’”

Although Sleepwalking takes place first in Northern California, and then in Utah, what you’re seeing on the screen is allRegina, Saskatchewan.

The largely California-based cast and crew braved blizzardsand temperatures of -37 Celsius in order to make the most of theirlimited budget by shooting here.

According to director Bill Maher, there was one more famousCanadian element they had to brave — ribbing from local crewmembers who had little sympathy for their warm-bloodedcounterparts. —MW

Directed by first-timer Bill Maher (not the political comic)from a script by Zac Stanford, Sleepwalking casts Theron asrestless single mother Joleen who, along with her 11-year-olddaughter Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), moves in with her brotherJames (Nick Stahl) after her boyfriend is arrested and she’sforced out of her home. But soon after moving in, Joleen meetsa new man and walks out on James, leaving Tara in his care.

Theron says the role intrigued her not as a star vehicle (her partis not huge), but more as something she just had to see get made.

“[Screen time] was never a concern of mine,” she says. “Ithink this story is really well-constructed, in that you reallyfeel the entire lives of all of these people. The little girl, who isobviously one of the leads in this film, really carries a lot of thecircumstances of living with this mom. I think you learn a lotabout her mom through watching her.

“As an actor, I feel like it’s not about you,” Theron adds. “It’salways in servicing the story. There are so many great perform-ances that you can look up, but just off the bat, Hal Holbrook inInto the Wild is something that has stayed with me ’til today, andI saw the movie eight months ago. Y’know, I never went, ‘Whathappens to him and where is his development?’ He serviced that

story so unbelievably beautifully, and I think that that’s what youdo. You never look at the size…. To me, it’s more about howdoes it all come together. I think that’s why I’m a producer.”

Sleepwalking is the second feature film Theron has both starredin and produced. Her first was Monster, and she learned thenthat not only was producing fulfilling; it could be a sanity-saver.

“It’s a mixture of a few things,” Theron explains. “I’m verypassionate about filmmaking, and for me that’s been throughbeing an actor and a producer; for others it’s through writingand directing. But there’s something really creative and amazingthat happens when I do produce. And I do think that producingactually is a positive thing for me when I’m acting. You know, asan actor, you spend a lot of time alone in your trailer. I’m surefor some people that’s a good thing. But I learned on Monsterthat it would have destroyed me, personally, if I had to live in atrailer by myself while playing that. I would have gone stir crazy.”

Theron also backed the music documentary East of Havana, and has an executive producer credit on the film she’s currentlyshooting, The Burning Plain.

Sometimes, though, it can be rewarding in an entirely dif-ferent way just to act. Like when it shows you a whole new side

After ending his 1994-2004 run as Ross Geller on the sitcomFriends, David Schwimmer took the transatlantic route todirecting his first big-screen feature, Run, Fat Boy, Run.

He made his West End London theatre debut in Neil LaBute’sSome Girls in 2005 and co-starred in the England- and Vancouver-shot Big Nothing, a blackmail caper that limped out of U.K.movie theatres in 2006.

But something emerged from Nothing: Schwimmer cementedhis collaboration with co-star Simon Pegg of Shaun of the Dead andHot Fuzz fame. They tweaked Michael Ian Black’s Run, Fat Boy, Run

script with Pegg starring as pudgy groom Dennis who leaveshis pregnant fiancée Libby (Thandie Newton) at the altar andtries to win her back years later by racing in the LondonMarathon. His saggy will power and Libby’s studly boyfriend Whit(Hank Azaria) stand between Dennis and his one true love.

Schwimmer had his own long-distance race to get the low-budget comedy shot on time and on budget in a relativelyunfamiliar location. His previous directing experience wasconfined to television, including 10 episodes of Friends.

how he came at it,” Pegg says in an interview at theToronto International Film Festival, where the movie made itsNorth American debut this past September. “A cynical personmight say he’s bored now because he’s made all this money. Hedidn’t walk onto the set like a novice. He walked on the setutterly aware of lens size and angles, and the line and all thetechnical know-how you need as a director.”

“He is an actor, so he knows how to handle us and get the bestout of us,” Pegg adds. “It was very reassuring to see him beingso professional.”

Far from his moping persona on Friends, a bubbly Schwimmer,41, discussed his maiden voyage into feature directing andbeyond during a private chat during the festival.

Did it make sense to you to direct your first movie in a foreign place?“It wasn’t by choice, really. The script was originally set inNew York around the New York Marathon, but it got purchasedby Material Entertainment in London and their mission is tomake films in London. So suddenly I found myself the directorof an English film.”

Given that you had spent a chunk of the previous few years in Englandperforming on the West End and acting in a movie with Simon, weren’tyou ready to go home? “When he signed up to do the rewrite andstar in it, it was kind of a no-brainer.”

Did being there for so long give you a better feel for the Britishsensibility? “It certainly gave me the opportunity to get familiar

with the particular parts of London which are so fantastic, which we tried to put on camera in the film. I’m a hugefan of architecture and loved exploring the differentneighbourhoods. That really prepared me to kind of immersemyself in London and the vibe there. It surprised me when Ithought about other English films — other romantic comedies— I had seen here in the States that weren’t reallyrepresentative of the London I was experiencing, primarily interms of casting and colour. There was no real ethnic diversityin the films. I was determined, and so was Simon, to do itdifferent in this one.”

Were you nervous about directing a movie for the first time? “Icertainly, in a healthy way, kind of felt, ‘Let’s bring it.’ You haveto bring your ‘A’ game to the table. I was very prepared. Iworked really hard in preproduction to be just as prepared aspossible, every scene blocked and shot-listed. I wanted a battleplan so that if mistakes happened, I would be more able to rollwith the punches. I knew we were shooting a very ambitious filmand we had no money. We had very little money.”

How about a ballpark figure? “Four-and-a-half million dollars. Itwas shot over 50 locations over 35 days in the middle of possiblythe most expensive city to shoot in in the world. I saw that wehad a marathon in the movie and when I saw that my assistantAD had budgeted 200 extras for that whole sequence — thereare normally 10,000 to 30,000 runners — I thought, did we allread the same script? But that was our budget.”

In hindsight, was it convenient to shoot this away from the States, abit under the radar? “I didn’t feel there was less pressure but, um,there was something nice about being a guest in the country. Itwas a feeling that pervaded my whole attitude and wholeexperience there. I always felt really grateful, every day.”

Could this be the start of a new career path? “I hope so. I certainlywant to direct more movies. It’s been a really interesting threeyears from when [Friends] ended. I think I didn’t want to kindof deal with how it would feel when the show ended, so I justtried to work as much as possible. I kind of kept my nose to theground. It’s only after having worked on this for almost a yearand a half that I can kind of check in with myself again. How doI feel about the show having ended? Is this a new chapter?”

Wow, not even a pop-culture icon can relax. “I’m not brought upto relax. There’s a real work ethic my parents instilled in methat I feel somehow that I’m not being productive if I’m notworking. I’m being lazy or something.”

Have your parents changed? “Yeah, now they say you need to takea break.”

Simon said you did everything in your power to show authority on theset — in a positive way. “I had done my homework, I guess. That’s nice of him to say. I felt the job is really easy in that youcast great actors. If you cast great actors, and you surroundyourself with excellent people, your job is a lot easier.”

You were quoted that you won’t be happy until you’re a dad.Could youelaborate? “I am a happy guy. What I meant by that, and maybeit’s a little out of context, is that I think I will be happiest whenI have a family, when I have children. And I say that because I’veseen my closest friends happier. I’ve never seen them as happyas when they’re holding their first kids and stuff.”

When it’s not happening romantically, do you bury yourself in work?“It’s quite the opposite. I feel like my personal life is probablytaking a backseat to my professional life. I think I need to startmaking that more of a priority. It’s impossible to have a realrelationship when you’re working as much or travelling indifferent countries.”

After working as an actor for hire on Rod Lurie’s Nothing But theTruth, the Valerie Plame-inspired story, do you have your eye on somedirecting projects? “Yeah, there are a couple of things I’ve readthat I’ve liked. I’m also developing something with a writerthat’s a dramatic thriller about internet predators.”

Although Friends ended in 2004, the public and media still seem veryinterested in you. Is that rewarding? “I think if you ask any actorthat, they’d probably give a similar answer, which is there’s adesire for more of a private life, but at the same time it’s reallytouching to me that that show and that character impacted asmany people as it did, especially young people.”
