We would like to thank those that have continued to pray for Rockbrook’s finances and continue to give to our finances. July was a great month; our general pledge and unpledged gifts were up, leaving us with a little over $7,000 in our checking account. We were able to pay $3,407 (a full month) of Mission Shares for July, but are still down $4,066 for the year. You may be asking why we did not use the money in our checking account to cover the remaining balance owed. Well, we are being conservative after having had some tight months this year; so as long as we are able to continue to pay our bills, we will use the extra money in our checking account each month to slowly make up the deficit in mission shares over the remainder of the year. The second quarter insurance payment was paid in July, and money was set aside to cover mowing and lawn expenses (it appears we are only being invoiced every other month). Please continue to keep Rockbrook finances in your prayers and thank you for your generosity.

Rockbrook United Methodist Church

There has been a few Rockbrook United Methodist Church pages made, so

please find the most updated page, go ahead and like the page, feel free to

check - in when you are at church as well as post pictures and news.

Greetings friends,

September is here. School is back in session. And

the Church programming that has been hibernating

over the summer is waking up again. I’m really

looking forward to experiencing Rockbrook when it is

running at full steam!

Many of you also realize that September is the month

that we start planning in earnest for next year. How

will we do mission and ministry in 2017 and beyond?

What programs will continue? What new ideas do we

have and how can we equip ourselves to carry them

out. Who will our leadership be? How will we pay for

it?

Regarding the Leadership Team, it is always difficult

for the new pastor, with only a few weeks in the

church, to select leaders for the upcoming year (s).

My approach is, if you are currently in a leadership

position, to assume that you are happy and feeling

fulfilled in that position unless you let me know

otherwise. If you are not currently filling a position but

feel a call to serve (even if you’re not really sure how

you want to serve) please let me know. If you are

seeking a change, again, let me know. Simply write

me a note, send an email, or give me a call.

(Remember not to tell me on Sunday morning as I am

sure to forget.)

God calls all of us to ministry. While not everyone is

called to pastor a church, God calls all of us to do

something – to take our place in the Body of Christ.

When we all answer God’s call we can truly be

effective in proclaiming God’s Good News!

Grace and peace,

Pastor Jim

SERVING SUNDAY SNACKS

To my wonderful church family and friends, I

appreciate all the compliments and comments for the

cookies and bars I make for our Sunday morning

services (even when I serve a disaster). I want to

thank Lois and Carl Johnson, Richard and Janice

Samson, and Van Timberlake for all the flour they

have given me. I am certain I have enough flour to

last until 2017. Dick and Fran Boeck always provide

the chocolate chips and butter I need to bake the

treats we share. Gene and Ruth Howard supply the

juice we serve every week. I thank Betty Morris and

Phyllis Rist for helping prepare everything at 7:30

every Sunday morning. I also thank all of you that

have been serving @ 10:15. I would be delighted to

have more volunteers to help serve form 10:15-10:45

(no baking required) If you are willing to serve once

every 6-8 weeks, please sign on the clip board next to

the cookies table. I look forward to serving with you

on the date you are available.

NEWS from THE QUARRY – September 2016

Rockbrook UMC Children’s Sunday School

Julie Vidlak, Children’s Ministry Director

… IMPORTANT SEPTEMBER NEWS FOR CHILDREN …

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

THERE WILL BE NO CHILDREN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL ON SEPT. 4TH, LABOR DAY WKEND!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fall Children’s Sunday school Kickoff –

September 11th – 9:35 to 10:30 a.m.

Children ages 3 through 6th grade are invited to join us on September 11th

to begin our new “school year” of Sunday School! We will meet as a large group in fellowship hall at

9:35 a.m. for introductory activities and music, then go to classrooms, meet teachers, and continue

the Bible lesson for the day. Classes dismiss at 10:30. Parents, come to the classroom at 10:30 to

have your child(ren) dismissed to you.

This year we begin our 2nd year of Cokesbury’s “DEEP BLUE” curriculum. Deep Blue incorporates Bible

stories, science activities, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a lived-faith experience that

will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today! We want Sunday school to encourage our

children to “dive deeper” into the Bible and explore their faith in fun and age-appropriate ways.

Fall quarter starts at the beginning of the Old Testament with lessons about Joseph.

The Fusion Youth Group is planning to attend the Camp Fontanelle Fall BBQ on Sept. 18 and play Gaga Ball. Any youth who would like to participate should notify Joyce or Cheri soon. If it is confirmed that enough people are planning to go, we will register with Camp

Fontanelle to go as a team. Lunch and other activities (zip line, laser tag, tree climbing) are also planned to be available at Camp Fontanelle on Sept. 18 (see http://www.campfontanelle.com/events/annual-bbq.html).

On Oct. 9, the Omaha Crop Hunger Walk will be held, which is an event in which many Omaha youth groups and adults

participate. The Walk is a fundraiser to benefit the Open Door Mission, Stephen Center, and Siena/Francis House. It will start at 1 p.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. The Fusion members who would like to go can have lunch together following the

Traditional Service and go together to the walk. A walking route will be marked for us to follow. If you are planning to attend this, please let Joyce know as soon as possible, so that we can determine how many cars will be needed for transportation to lunch

and to the place that the walk will start.

Suggestions for specific Fusion meeting lesson/discussion topics, fundraisers, service activities, and fun activities from any youth and/or parents would be very much appreciated. Please send ideas to Joyce and/or Cheri.

Youth Ministry Coordinator

Rockbrook United Methodist Church currently has a part-time opening for a Youth Ministry Coordinator.

The primary role of the Youth Ministry Coordinator is guiding young people in spiritual growth and opportunities to serve the Church and community. This

includes planning and directing middle school and high school youth groups, worship, Sunday school, and other activities in cooperation with the Pastor,

Director of Children’s Ministries and the Church Education Committee. Duties also include selecting curriculum and resources in consultation with the

Education Committee and the Pastor.

A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Other desired qualifications include experience in youth ministry or education, effective interpersonal and communication

skills, the ability to appropriately use social media, and the ability to work collaboratively with youth, parents, and church ministry teams.

A background check and Safe Gatherings training is required.

The people of Kansas and Nebraska are no strangers to natural disasters, so they know when a crisis strikes, sometimes you need some help to overcome the adversity. So the Great Plains Conference of The United Methodist Church is inviting people of all faiths in the two-state area to mobilize to help the people suffering the record-setting flooding in Louisiana. One of the biggest needs is a flood-bucket kit that helps victims start to repair the damage once the waters recede.

If you’re interested and participating in helping, the following items are needed; as well as you may make a contribution and place it in the offering plate, designated to flood relief.

Each fits inside a 5-gallon bucket with a resealable lid and includes: • One 50-ounce bottle or two 25-ounce bottles of liquid laundry detergent. • A 12- to 16-ounce bottle of liquid cleaner that can be mixed with water (no spray cleaners). • A 16- to 28-ounce bottle of dish soap. • One can of aerosol or pump air freshener. • A 6- to 14-ounce aerosol or spray pump of insect repellant. • One scrub brush with a plastic or wooden handle. • Eighteen cleaning wipes (please, no terry-cloth towels). • Seven non-cellulose sponges. • Five scouring pads (nothing with soap built in). • Fifty clothespins. • One 100-foot or two 50-foot cotton or plastic clotheslines. • A 24-roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33 to 45 gallons of capacity. • Five dust masks. • Two pairs of dishwashing gloves (durable enough for multiple uses). • One pair of work gloves with either a leather palm or all leather. • One 5-gallon bucket with a resealable lid. All of the items listed above, except the bucket with lid, can be found at most dollar or discount stores. More details about how to pack the bucket for easy transportation to the area in need can be found on the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) website at http://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies/Relief-Supply-Kits/Cleaning. Volunteer Opportunites: Please contact Rev. Hollie Tapley, Great Plains Conference disaster response coordinator, at 316-684-0266 or via email at [email protected].
