June 14, 2020 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

F irst Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14-16

Although the setting for our first reading is Moses’ final address to the people of Israel before they entered the Promised land, the text was actually written hundreds of years later when the people are anticipating a return to Judea following their exile in Babylon. This passage encourages the people to remember how God has always provided for them, even when the situation seemed most hopeless, and suggests that it is God’s word which provides authentic life.

S econd Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17

The second reading’s brief, but important, excerpt from a Pauline letter teaches that the Body of Christ refers not just to bread and wine, but to the unified communion of the people of God, the Church.

G ospel: John 6:51-58

Our Gospel reading is part of the bread of life discourse in the Gospel of John. Possibly a sermon preached in John’s church, the text declares that those who feed on Jesus, the Word of God, share in the transcendent life of God.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of June 14

June 14, 2020 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven . . . the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the

world . . . For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.” (John 6: 51-58)

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus, also known as Corpus Christi Sunday. We focus on our central belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and the meaning of this for all of our lives. Jesus Christ gives us His Body and Blood, feeding us with his life when the Bread and Wine become His Body and Blood during the Consecration in the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass. He does this so that we can become like Him and bring His Presence to the world. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

These past weeks have been a long stretch, a “fast “that no one expected. And we’re pretty hungry:

Hungry for human contact: to re-connect with family and friends beyond the four walls we’ve been confined behind.

Hungry for peace of mind: to satisfy our fear and anxiety, to know that we and our families are and will be safe, to getting back to “normal” — whatever “normal” will be.

Hungry for the little things that bring joy and laughter to our days: eating hot dogs at a ballpark, sitting on the beach with a great book, walking in the woods, meeting friends for drinks at a downtown café, getting a haircut or our hair done.

Hungry for a sense of purpose to our days: to go back to work doing something constructive and purposeful, to bring home a paycheck again, to be able to contribute something meaningful to our communities, to care for those who are struggling.

Some of us have experienced a hunger that will never be satisfied: losing a loved one to the virus and not being able to say goodbye.

And some of us have been hungry for bread itself, struggling to put food on the table each evening, having to do without many of the simple, basic things we depend on.

But what we’re all starving for is something which “bread” alone cannot satisfy.

This Sunday’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord is especially poignant this spring. We’ve come to realize a “hunger” in our lives that food and drink cannot come close to satisfying: a hunger to belong, a hunger to matter, a hunger to be at peace, a hunger to love and be loved. If nothing else,

these weeks have given us a new appreciation and understanding of the words of Jesus: that the “bread” that truly nourishes is generosity and compassion that mirrors that of God, that the “treasures” of lasting value are the good we can do for those we love, that the Spirit of God lives and moves among us in selfless generosity and sacrificial service. In Christ’s Peace, Father John

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

FOR WHAT DO YOU HUNGER?

In the Eucharist, we are fed with Christ’s Body and Blood. In the sacred meal that is the Mass, we are nourished with heavenly food in order that we might live more fully as Christ’s disciples each day.

Adults: What is one thing that I can do this week to make Christ present to others so that they experience him through my words and actions?

Children: What is one thing that I can do this week to make my participation during Mass more meaningful to me and to my friends?

A Family Perspective: Our faith teaches us that when we gather to celebrate Mass, Jesus is present to us. The bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is what we mean by the word transubstantiation: Jesus makes himself present to all who receive the Body and Blood of Christ. If there are children in your family who have already celebrated their First Holy Communion, invite them to share their memories of this special day. If there are family photos taken on this occasion, bring them out and share them together. Adults in the family may also share memories or photos that they have of their First Communion. Then read together today’s Gospel, John 6:51–58. Reflect together on what Jesus means when he calls himself the “living bread.” Recall that every time we receive the Eucharist, Jesus keeps the promise he made in today’s Gospel—those who eat his flesh and drink his blood will remain forever connected to him.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR VBS DIRECTOR

I wanted to let you know that unfortunately we've come to the decision that it will not be possible to conduct Vacation Bible School this Summer. The combination of nearly 200 participants (campers and volunteers) and limited space at Assumption, lead us to this difficult conclusion.

This noticel is sent with a heavy heart as I will miss having an adventure with you on the "Rocky Railroad", but I know Jesus will pull us through and VBS 2021 will be better than ever! Sarah Neuhoff
