DIY DESIGNER BOOK SHELF
Barry demonstrates some simple tips on how to create a designer bookshelf for only $20 and an hour
or two of your time.
HOW TO Step 1: Get some scalloped timber from Bunnings. Cut the scalloped timber – which forms the front of
the bookshelf – exactly in half. Baz used a drop saw, but any fine-tooth hand-saw will work
just as well.
Step 2: Using the cut-in-half scalloped timber, mark the plain timber on the back and bottom to match
the lengths. This timber should be the same height as the scalloped timber.
Step 3: Using the drop saw again (or hand saw), cut two lengths for the base and back of the
bookshelf.
Step 3: Place the equal lengths of timber together to form the shape of the shelf. Mark out the width
of the shelf on some off-cuts to create the end piece.
Step 4: Cut the off-cuts along the markings.
Step 5: Mark the end pieces where they meet the scalloped front piece and where they meet the back
piece.
Step 6: Using something curved, mark a curve from front to back and cut along line with hand saw.
Step 7: Lightly sand all pieces and then paint a couple of coats.
Step 8: Stick the pieces together using wood glue and then nails.
Step 9: Give all pieces another light sand before the final coat of paint.
Handy Hint: To avoid splitting the wood when nailing the end-piece on, create an indent using the
head of the nail, before hammering the nail in. Blunting the nail also helps prevent the wood splitting.
