    IMI Yorkshire Fittings Limited has beenworking with copper and its alloys for overone hundred years. From our head office in

    Stourton, Leeds, we have developed our ranges

    of fittings and valves to such a degree that theyare now widely regarded as among the bestengineered products of their kind.

    The first industrial use of our Stourton sitedates from 1888 when Elmores Depositing Co.manufactured copper tubes here. However, inthe early 1800s the site was a racecourse andthe venue for the St. Leger.

    The Yorkshire connection began in 1909 whenElmores became the Yorkshire Copper Works(YCW), producing high quality condensertubing. The advent of the First World War sawa break in tube production as the companywas requisitioned to manufacture munitionsfor the war effort. However, by the 1920snormal production had resumed and, from the1930s, business boomed as copper enjoyedwidespread growth in domestic plumbingsystems. In the period following the launch ofits now world famous Yorkshire integral solderring fitting in 1934, the Yorkshire CopperWorks was so successful that in 1958 it mergedwith the ICI Metals Division to become known

    as Yorkshire Imperial Metals(YIM

    ).

    In 1968, Yorkshire Imperial Metals wasincorporated into the Building Products Groupof IMI plc, a major international industrialgroup and in 1986 took on its present identity

    and the name IMI Yorkshire Fittings Limited.Since then we have developed from a companywith a largely UK focus to a major Europeansupplier with manufacturing, sales anddistribution operations throughout Europe,servicing domestic and export markets all overthe world.

    Over the past one hundred years ourexperience of working with copper and itsalloys to develop solutions for pipeworksystem designers and installers has given usthe expertise to manufacture the highestquality products for industrial and domesticusers throughout the world.     IMI Yorkshire Fittings integral solder ringfitting, launched in 1934 and protected bypatent for 25 years, introduced a completely

    new concept to plumbing and led to the

    development of light gauge copper tubes.During manufacture an integral ring of highquality lead free solder is positioned in the wallof each capillary socket. The principle of capillaryattraction ensures that when heat is applied tothe exterior of the fitting, the solder is drawninto the gap between the tube and the fitting,forming a completely reliable joint without theneed for additional solder or end feeding.

    Back in 1934, the uniqueness of the idea wasmatched by an unprecedented sales campaignby purposely trained staff who travelled thelength and breadth of the countrydemonstrating this revolutionary new fitting.From their specially equipped vans, theydemonstrated the principle of the Yorkshireintegral solder ring fitting to architects,plumbers merchants and tradesmen althoughthey would not mention how the solder wasinserted into the fitting which at that timewas a closely guarded secret.

    Yorkshire integral solder ring fittings wereinitially produced from one mill on theStourton site, however demand for the fittingwas such that the construction of two more

    mills followed in rapid succession. TodayYorkshire Potable integral solder ring fittingsare still manufactured exclusively in Leeds,although, with the range now comprising over900 different items in addition to high duty andlarge size fittings, valves, accessories andheating components, production is now basedon modern cellular manufacturing systems.

    In response to concern by Governmentagencies regarding the potential risks associatedwith lead in drinking water, all the YorkshirePotable integral solder ring fittings manufactured

    since 1985 have contained a lead-free solderand are marked YP (Yorkshire Potable). Thissolder was specially developed by thecompany and is now incorporated in BritishStandards. With its distinctive mark the

    Yorkshire Potable range provides installers,specifiers and water companies with a visibleassurance that no lead solder is present in a

    Yorkshire installation.

    The popularity and practicality of theYorkshire integral solder ring fitting has neverwaned and its reputation for reliability has ledto it being installed in many prestigiousbuildings such as the Royal Armouries

    Museum in Leeds and the Globe Theatre inLondon, as well as a host of Cunard luxuryliners.

    Yorkshire Potable integral solder ringfittings are manufactured from threedifferent types of material copper,

    gunmetal or a Dezincification resistant brass

    (DZR).

    For areas prone to dezincificationDezincification is a complex corrosion processthat can lead to the premature failure offittings made of duplex brass. YorkshirePotable fittings are manufactured fromcopper, gunmetal or DZR alloy and are all fullyresistant to dezincification.

    Special finishesAs Yorkshire Potable fittings may be used insituations where they are on show - forinstance, in bathrooms where bothfunctionality and maximum aesthetic appealare required they are available in a chromeplate finish. This can either be to acommercial chrome plate finish or, availableto order in polished quality chrome plate.

    Internationally recognisedmarkingAll Yorkshire Potable fittingsmanufactured from DZRalloy carry the distinctivemark.

    The earliest recorded use of copper forconveying water is a conduit at Abusir in Egypt.Dated to 2750 BC, it is almost 4,750 years oldand is still in a remarkable state of preservation.

    Over four thousand years later, at thebeginning of the 20th century, copper was once

    again being used for carrying water in Europeand America in public buildings, hospitals andsimilar institutions. Its relatively high cost atthe time was outweighed by its provencorrosion resistance, which resulted in longservice and negligible maintenance costs.

    Today, copper and copper alloys are recognisedas the only tried and tested plumbing materialson the grounds of corrosion resistance alone.Properly installed copper and copper alloysystems can be expected to outlast many ofthe buildings in which they are installed.

    In fact, once a copper and copper alloy systemis installed it will require no regular maintenanceand is extremely resilient, giving excellent

    protection against contaminants that threaten thedomestic water supply. Nothing can get throughthe walls no fluids, no germs and no oxygen.Copper does not absorb organic substancesand cannot be softened by them in service. Thismeans that in situations where the use of otherpipeline materials is restricted under UnitedKingdom Water Byelaws, for example in groundsubject to spillage of hydrocarbons, such asoil, petrol or creosote, copper and its alloyscan be used with complete confidence. Andbecause they are non-permeable, will take anypaint finish you wish to apply as well as being

    totally unaffected by the suns ultra violet rays.Copper and copper alloys are fit-and-forgetplumbing materials with a proven track recordof long and trouble-free service, giving peaceof mind to specifiers and installers alike.

    Yorkshire Potable integral solder ringcapillary fittings are suitable for jointingcopper tube to the new European

    standard EN 1057.

    Because this new standard is a combination ofthe existing European copper tube standards,most currently available products willcontinue to be obtainable. There are, however,a number of changes, most importantly totube sizes and material temper references.

    In drawing up the standard, the committeeresponsible took the opportunity to rationalisetube sizes. As a result, EN 1057 stipulatesEuropean recommended dimensions andother existing European, but non-recommended, dimensions.

    Under EN 1057, Table W and Table Y softcondition copper tube has the designatedmaterial temper reference R220. Table X and

    Table Y half-hard tube becomes R250.

    tube is specified.

    The following instructions for jointing

    Yorkshire Potable integral solder ringfittings illustrate just how easy it is to use

    Yorkshire products. Installation details for

    Yorkshire general high duty and Yorkshirewedge ring fittings can be found on pagessixteen and seventeen respectively.

    The fittings use the principle of capillaryattraction to allow solder to fill the gapbetween fitting and tube to form a completelyreliable joint.

    PreliminariesSelect the correct size of tube and fittings forthe job. Ensure the ends of the tube are cutsquare and remove any burr from the inside or

    outside. Re-round the ends with a re-roundingtool if using fully annealed tube i.e.EN 1057 R220/R250.

    Installation tips1.The reliability of soldered joints is greatlyinfluenced by the type of flux used. Yorkshireflux and Traditional Craftsmans flux areespecially formulated for jointing copper tubeswith Yorkshire and Endex fittings. However,regardless of which flux is chosen, the tube andfitting should always be cleaned before fluxing.

    All fluxes are, to some extent, corrosive butspecial care should be taken with so-called selfcleaning fluxes.

    It is important that the system is flushedimmediately after soldering, especially if thesystem is to be left empty for any length of time.External flux residues should also be removedto prevent unsightly stains or in extreme casescorrosion of pipework.

    2. If one or more ends of a YP fitting are toremain unmade a short length of correctlysized, uncleaned tube should be inserted intothe ends to be left unjointed. Keep this section

    cool by wrapping a wet rag around it whileheating the remaining ends.

    3. Remaking joints: J oints made with YorkshirePotable fittings are difficult to disconnect dueto the intermetallic bonding between thesolder and the copper of the fitting and tubeand therefore the re-use of Yorkshire Potablefittings is not generally recommended.

    However, in some situations, joints can beremade by fluxing the tinned portion of thetube and reinserting this into the fitting. Thenheat the joint and hand-feed lead-free solder. Ifa new tube is to be used, clean and flux thetube before assembly. End feed lead free solderat the mouth of the socket after reheating.

    4. Most male connectors eg. YP3, YP8, andYP13 have taper BSP threads and may requirethe use of jointing materials, it is advisable thatsoldering operations are completed beforesuch materials are applied to the threads.

    For domestic water services, the use of aUKWFBS (WRc) listed jointing compoundcomplying with BS 6956 Part 5 or PTFE tapecomplying with BS 6974 and satisfying therequirements of BS 6920 Part 1 isrecommended. When installing fittings withparallel connector threads, a good quality

    jointing washer should be used.

    5. Union fittings have metal-to-metal conejoints to BS 1010. Avoid damaging the matingfaces and, if required, use a UKWFBS (WRc)listed jointing compound complying withBS 6956 Part 5 or apply a sufficient amount ofPTFE tape complying with BS 6974 andsatisfying the requirements of BS 6920 Part 1.

    Tighten the joint with a spanner.

    6. If it is necessary to break into existing pipesfor repairs or to fit new branches, slipcouplings or tees which have no tube stopsmake the job easier and avoid disturbing the

    rest of the system.

    Using Yorkshire Potable fittings withchrome plated tubeAs solder will not bond to chrome plate theplating needs to be removed before a joint ismade.

    1. Remove chrome plating from the tube forthe distance the tube goes into the fitting usingcoarse emery cloth, followed by finesandpaper or a Yorkshire cleaning pad.

    2. After applying flux to the surface of the tube

    and fitting heat the joint in the usual manner.3. Discolouration of the chromium caused byheating the joint can be removed by washingthe fitting with soap and warm waterimmediately after the joint has cooled.

    Assembly:

    Step 1Clean the inside of the fittingsocket and the outside ofthe tube with a Yorkshirecleaning pad, fine sandpaper,or steel wool.

    Step 2Using a suitable brush,apply adequate but notexcessive Yorkshire flux toboth the outside surface ofthe tube and the inside

    surface of the fitting socket.

    Step 3Insert the tube into the

    fitting until it reaches thetube stop, then wipe off anyexcess flux. Heat theassembled joint until acomplete ring of solderappears at the mouth of thefitting.

    Step 4Allow the joint to coolwithout disturbance. Cleanthe joint generally.

    Amajor consideration when designingplumbing and heating systems is thermalmovement. Pipework systems expand

    and contract with changes in temperature and

    will be subjected to stress if their movement isrestricted. So, particularly with central heatingsystems, always account for the effects ofthermal movement when designing orinstalling a system.

    Copper has a coefficient in linear expansion of17 x 10-6/ C. As an example, a 10 metre lengthof copper pipe carrying domestic hot water at60C will expand by almost 7mm (more than 14")when heated from an ambient temperature of20 C.

    In addition, assuming that temperature cycling

    of the system is 20C, there will be acontinuous cycle of expansion and contractionof 3.4mm taking place.

    The table below gives the expansion in mm ofcopper tube for various rises in temperature.

    Clearly the stresses imposed can beconsiderable if no allowance is made forthermal movement. Stress concentrationsbetween fixed points typically found atradiators, valves and other fittings should beavoided wherever possible.

    Anchoring the branch of a tee, or connecting a

    radiator by means of too short a spur, willprevent normal thermal movement and maylead to failure. As such, expansion loops orbellows devices should be incorporated atappropriate points within the system. Whencontinual thermal cycling is encountered, ahorse shoe link, or loop formed from onelength of the tube, is recommended.

    Wherever pipework is to be installed underscreed or plaster, it is very important to makeadequate allowance for thermal movement.

    The preferred practice is to lay tubing in ductssurrounded by loose, non-rigid material suchas vermiculite or glass wool.

    A useful reference document to consult forfurther information is BS 6700 water servicesin buildings.

    Adapting imperial to metric withYorkshireSometimes a Yorkshire Potable fitting mayneed to be connected to an older installationwhere imperial sized tube has been used. Thispresents no problem - simply use a YorkshirePotable imperial to metric adaptor coupling.One end of the adaptor fits onto imperial pipe

    and the other on to metric pipe. YorkshirePotable imperial to metric adaptors areavailable in several combinations.

    Threaded connectorsYorkshire Potable male threaded connectorsfor jointing pipework to boilers, pumps orbackplate elbows have taper male BSPthreads. A small quantity of inert jointingcompound or PTFE tape should be applied tothe male thread before installing the fittings.

    Female connectorsYorkshire Potable female threaded connectorshave internal threads to BS 2779 and should beused for general connections from malethreaded fittings to copper pipework.

    assembled with tubes to EN 1057.

    Solder content

    Yorkshire Potable integral solder ring fittingscontain tin/copper lead-free solder, alloynumber 23 with a melting range of 227 235C.

    Jointing temperatures can be easily reachedusing a conventional heat source such as apropane or butane torch.

    Standards and approvalsYorkshire Potable fittings in sizes 6mm to67mm comply with BS 864 Part 2.

    External BSP (taper) threads are machined toBS 864 : Part 2. External and internal BSPparallel threads conform with BS 2779 andISO R228/1.

    Yorkshire general high duty fittings arespecially designed for use with copperand copper alloy tubes which need to

    operate at higher temperatures or pressures

    than are permissible with soft solder joints.The range is made from gunmetal (LG4 and LG2)or aluminium brass.

    The integral solder ring is of a cadmium-freesilver brazing alloy, complying with thecompositional requirements of BS 1845 alloyAg14.

    The jointing temperature for general high dutyfittings is approximately 700C and is lowerthan that required to make a brass brazed

    joint, thus the risk of overheating the tube andfitting is reduced.

    Where to use general high duty fittingsYorkshire general high duty fittings should beused for systems in which service conditionsexceed the capabilities of soft solders, forexample, high temperature heating servicessuch as, steam and condensate pipelines. Thecharacteristics of the joint make the fittingsuitable for hydraulic services where vibrationand stresses are imposed. The range is alsosuitable for specialised services where hightemperatures and pressures exist singly or in

    combination.Other uses include; refrigeration, cryogenic,vacuum, air-conditioning services, vehiclebraking systems and gas lines medical,nitrogen and oxygen.

    Size rangeGeneral high duty fittings are manufactured tofit tube sizes from 6mm to 54mm outsidediameter and are designed for jointing copperand copper alloy tubes to EN 1057.

    Installation preliminaries1. Select the correct size of fitting and tube.

    2. Ensure that the tube ends are cut square

    and remove any burrs. Do not use a rotarytube cutter as this tends to reduce thediameter of the tube ends.

    3. Clean the outside of the tube and inside andend face of each fitting socket with finesandpaper, Yorkshire cleaning pad or alumina-based paper or cloth.

    4. General high duty fittings require the use ofthe correct flux. Flux is supplied as either readymixed paste or powder. If powder flux is usedsufficient should be mixed with clean water andblended into a creamy paste. Mix the flux as

    required and keep the powder in the containerdry - replace the lid immediately after use.

    Installation tips1.The source of heat should be sufficientlylarge to heat the tube and fitting gently to avisible red heat in poor daylight approximately 700C.

    2. When heating general high duty joints usean oxy/gas, oxy/acetylene or oxy/propanetorch of the appropriate size.

    3. A large, soft, neutral or slightly reducing

    flame should be used to avoid excessive localheating, and the torch should be kept movingthroughout the making of the joint.

    4. Recommended fluxs include:

    a. Degussa H ready mixed paste.b. Easy-Flo powder flux.

    Satisfactory joints can however be made withother suitable silver brazing alloy fluxes.

    5. Union type fittings such as 11GHD, 65GHDand 69GHD have round nose-to-seat joints.

    Assembly

    Step 1Clean the outside of the tubeand the inside of the fittingwith fine sandpaper or a

    Yorkshire cleaning pad.

    Step 2With a small brush, applythe flux paste to the insideof the fitting socket and theoutside of the tube, to alength slightly greater thanthe socket depth.Insert the tube into thefitting until it reaches thestop, preferably twisting thetube in the fitting to spreadthe flux. Ensure that thetubes are correctly lined upand adequately supported,

    otherwise distortion orcracking of the fittings mayoccur when at brazingtemperature.

    To avoid leaks, care should be taken to protectthe jointing faces from damage. Any fluxresidues and scale must be removed after

    heating. With joints of this type, it is essentialto use a UKWFBS (WRc) listed jointingcompound complying with BS 6956 Part 5 orsufficient PTFE tape complying with BS 6974and satisfying the requirements of BS 6920 Part 1to obtain completely satisfactory results.

    6. Silver brazing alloy fluxes must be usedwith care and always in a well ventilated area.

    The safety precautions detailed on the fluxcontainers must be strictly followed. Furtherinformation is available on request.

    7.J oints made with Yorkshire general high

    duty fittings should be regarded as permanent.If it is anticipated that the system will have tobe broken into, fittings such as the 11GHDunion coupling should be installed at appropriatepoints. The use of composite flanges offers avery satisfactory alternative, particularly in thelarger sizes (22mm 54mm). Yorcalloy flangesin sizes 22mm to 54mm inclusive with BS 10table D outers are available for the generalhigh duty range. For further details, pleasecontact your local sales office.

    8.The use of disconnecting fittings also allowsections of the installation to be completed onthe workbench, thus avoiding the need tomake joints in difficult places. Thisprefabrication technique is particularlyrecommended in the case of the larger sizes(22mm 54mm).

    9. Imperial to metric adaptors: Where thelayout permits, the most economical way ofadapting from imperial to metric is to use the

    9GHD.

    Step 3Heat the appropriate socketand tube to approximately700C (red heat in poordaylight). Continue heatinguntil a complete ring ofsolder appears round thesocket month. This is proofof a sound joint. Continue toheat generally for a few

    seconds. Repeat thismethod for each joint inturn. If for any reason thecomplete ring of solder doesnot appear, apply additionalflux to the mouth of thesocket and end feed the jointwith J ohnson MatheysSilver-Flo 55 or equivalentsilver brazing alloy to thecompositional requirementsof BS 1845 Ag 14.

    Step 4Allow joints to cool withoutdisturbance. Do not quenchin water. Residual flux mustbe removed when cold withwarm water, a steel wirebrush or abrasive. Ifrequired, oxide films can beremoved with an abrasive orby chemical means.

    These specially designed wedge ringfittings contain an integral soft solder ringfor the trouble-free jointing of copper

    tubes to EN 1057. The range is manufactured

    from gunmetal or copper.

    All fittings incorporate lead-free solder and allends contain tin/silver solder (Alloy number 29Sn97Ag3), except reduced ends with diameterssmaller than 76.1mm which contain tin/coppersolder (Alloy number 23 Sn99Cu1).

    Because of the dimensional tolerancevariations of 76.1 and 108mm tubes, it is notpossible to obtain the correct capillaryconditions for soft soldering with parallelsocket fittings.

    To overcome this, Yorkshire wedge ring fittingsare made with tapered sockets. The annularspace between the socket wall and the paralleltube is occupied by a pre-tinned taperedwedge ring, pushed home by the specialassembly jig. The wedge ring enables thecorrect soldering tolerances to be achieved.

    Flange connectors are available in 76.1mm and108mm sizes with flange bolt hole sizes andflange outside diameters to BS 4504 section 3.3(metric) or BS 10 table D (imperial).

    Where to use Yorkshire wedge ringfittingsWedge ring fittings are ideal for jointing copperpipelines, primarily for potable water services,water heating, sanitation and manyengineering applications.

    Size rangeThe Yorkshire wedge ring range comprisescouplings, reducers, connectors, bends, teesand stop ends and flanges in both 76.1 mm and108mm sizes.

    Installation preliminaries1. Select the correct size of fitting and tube.

    2. Ensure that the tube ends are cut square

    and remove any burrs.3. Clean the outside of the tube with finesandpaper or a Yorkshire cleaning pad.

    4. Flux the tube end, the socket of the fittingand both sides of the tapered ring with

    Yorkshire flux.

    Assembly1. Slip the wedge ring onto the tube, with thethinner edge towards the fitting, and push thetube into the fitting, press the ring as far aspossible into the mouth of the fitting by hand.

    2.Take the assembly tool, unscrew the nuts,and open the tool.

    3. Locate the assembly tool on the fitting andtube, ensuring that captive part engages theshoulder of the fitting. See that the sliding partof the tool is free to engage on the exposedface of the wedge ring. Then make sure thatboth halves of the assembly tool arecompletely closed.

    4. Screw both nuts hand tight then, using anopen ended spanner or good quality adjustablespanner, tighten the nuts alternately, exerting an

    even pressure on the wedge ring until it is feltthat the ring has been pressed home. DO NOTUSE EXCESSIVE FORCE. The tapered wedgering, when pressed home, may be a little aboveor below the level of the mouth of the fitting.

    5. Unscrew the nuts, remove the assembly tooland repeat stages 1 to 5 for the remainingend(s) of the fitting.

    6. Heat the joint. Because of the large mass ofmetal in the tube and the fitting, it is necessaryto use a blowlamp giving a flame of generous

    Step 1Slip the wedge ring onto thetube, with the thinner edgetowards the fitting, and pushthe tube into the fitting up tothe tube stop. By hand,press the ring as far aspossible into the mouth ofthe fitting.

    Step 2Take the assembly tool,

    unscrew the nuts, and openthe tool. Locate theassembly tool on the fittingand tube, ensuring that thecaptive part engages theshoulder of the fitting. Seethat the sliding part of thetool is free to engage theexposed face of the wedgering. Then make sure thatboth halves of the tool arecompletely closed.

    Step 3Screw both nuts hand tightthen, using a spanner,tighten the nuts alternately,exerting an even pressureon the wedge ring until it is

    felt that the ring has beenpressed home. Unscrew thenuts, remove the assemblytool and repeat theprocedure for the remainingends of the fitting.

    proportions or, alternatively, an air/gas blowtorch.

    Heat each joint separately. Do not concentratethe flame at one point. Heat around the fittingsocket and the tube where it enters the fitting.Continue heating until complete rings of solderappear between the tube and the tapered ring,and between the tapered ring and the fitting.

    The appearance of these two rings of solder isessential and, when visible, they are proof of asound joint.

    When the tolerance between tube and fitting issuch that the outer end of the tapered ring isbelow the mouth of the fitting, the two solderrings may join together.

    7. Leave the joint(s) undisturbed to cool.

    8. Remove external flux residues and, whereappropriate, flush out the pipework.

    Atubular copper coil heat exchanger designedfor the simple and economic conversion ofdirect hot water cylinders to indirect use

    to enable the converted unit to operate as apurpose made unit. All materials in the Sidewinderconversion coil are resistant to dezincification.

    Where to use the SidewinderThe Sidewinder conversion coil is suitable foruse in copper cylinders with a capacity of up to180 litres. Cylinders should be from 380mm (15")diameter upwards to allow the coil to be insertedfrom the side. Where the capacity of the cylinderexceeds 180 litres, two or more coils should beinstalled, depending on the performance required.

    TheSidewinder conversion coil will operate onboth gravity and pumped primaries wherevercombined central heating and domestic hotwater services are required.

    The conversion coil can be used withsmallbore,minibore, pressurised or non-pressurised centralheating systems. The coil is particularly effectivewhere natural (gravity) circulation is required.Sidewinder conversion coils can be used forindustrial applications where low outputheatexchangers are required such as vats or tanks.

    ConnectionsFlow and return connections to theSidewinder should be made with the following34" capillary or compression connectors:

    Yorkshire Potable YP72 plus a YP64 or YP68Kuterlite 612 22 x 34" or 28 x 34"

    When installation is complete, refill thecylinder and recharge the primary circuit inthe normal way.

    InstallationIf the Sidewinder conversion coil is to be fittedto a pre-insulated cylinder, the installer shouldfirst check that there will be sufficientclearance around the holes to enable theSidewinder conversion coil to be fitted without

    damaging either the coil or the cylinder.After draining the cylinder, any existing flowand return pipes should be disconnected andthe cylinder connections sealed with cap nutsor plugs as appropriate, e.g. Yorkshire 470 DZRor 450 DZR.

    Decide where best to position the Sidewinderconversion coil within the cylinder. The coilshould be installed near the bottom of thecylinder and should not come into contactwith the electric immersion heater element. Ifnecessary remove the immersion heater.

    Draw two circles, A and B, using the templateprovided, ensuring they are positioned vertically,to illustrate the position of the coil ends on thecylinder wall and punch the centres. Aroundthe top circle A, and using the same centre,mark a second circle 70mm (234") in diameter(using the outer copper washer supplied as aguide) to ensure the correct final alignment ofthe coil when installed. Drill the hole 54mm(218") diameter.

    Drill the bottom hole B 27mm (1116") diameter.

    Smooth the edges of both holes before feedingin the coil. Insert one end of coil into thecylinder through hole A, having first secured afibre washer to the threaded end with jointingpaste. Slowly wind the coil into the cylinderwithout exerting undue pressure.

    Installation

    Step 1Using the template provided,

    mark vertically the positionof the coil ends on thecylinder wall and punch thecentres. Around the topcircle A, and using the samecentre, mark a second circle70mm (234") in diameter(using the outer copperwasher as a guide) toensure correct finalalignment of the Sidewinderwhen fitting. Drill the hole54mm (218") diameter.Drill the lower hole B, 27mm

    16") diameter. Smooth theedges of both holes beforefeeding in the sidewinder.

    Step 2Insert one end of coil into

    cylinder through top hole,having first secured a fibrewasher to the threaded endwith jointing paste. Slowlywind the coil into thecylinder without forcing.

    Supporting the coil, through hole A, with thepiece of plastic tube supplied manoeuvre thebottom connection through hole B, and fitanother fibre washer and a back nut to the

    bottom connection and loosely tighten.Pass one of the fibre washers and the notchedsealing plate over the plastic tube, and byrotating, guide them into the cylinder and onto the threaded end of the coil.     The Yorkshire Micraversion heating element isa tubular copper heat exchanger, designedfor the easy and economic conversion of

    copper direct hot water cylinders to indirect use.

    It will enable the converted cylinder to functionas a purposemade unit and will operate onpumped primaries wherever combined centralheating and domestic water services are required.

    Copper and copper alloys are used in themanufacture of the Micraversion. The manifoldis a gunmetal casting and all brass componentsthat come in contact with water aredezincification resistant.

    Two patterns of Micraversion heating elementare available. The HE670 is for top fittingapplications and the HE400 generally for side

    fittingsituations. In the latter case, one or twoelements may be installed. It is important to checkthe dimensions of the cylinder before installation.

    Where to use M icraversionThe units are primarily intended for use instandard 900 x 450mm direct copper cylinderswith a capacity of approximately 120 litres.

    If a Micraversion is to be installed in a nonestandard cylinder the following dimensionsshould be adhered to:

    Fitted as a top entry conversion element the

    HE670requires a cylinder height of at least900mm;

    Fitted as a side entryconversionelement theHE400 the cylinder diameter must be at least450mm.

    The Micraversion can be used in most types ofheating installations, small bore or minibore,pressurised or non-pressurised. It is alsosuitable for industrial and commercialapplications, where low output heatexchangers are required such as vats or tanks.

    Performance dataMicraversion will provide domestic hot waterasshown if the primary water temperature is 85C.

    Installation

    Step 1Drain the cylinder sufficientlyto avoid any spillage of water

    when the immersion heateror blanking plug is removedfrom the cylinder boss.

    Step 2Carefully fit the Micraversionto the immersion heater bossat the top of the cylinder. Or,in the case of a combinationunit, to the boss at the bottom

    of the cylinder. Check that thejointing face of the cylinder

    boss is clean andundamaged. Fit the elementwith the washer provided,ensuring the washer iscentral before tightening.

    Step 3Tighten the element to thecylinder using a spanner onthe manifold flange only. Donot attempt to tighten theelement on the copper outlettubes or brass fittings. The

    joints in this manifold are

    factory sealed and shouldnot be disturbed.

    Step 4The outlets may be joined tothe connecting pipework with

    Yorkshire, Kuterlite or Tectitefittings. However, for ease ofservicing, we recommend theuse of Tectiteor Kuterlite.

    Tubes may be shortened ifrequired to within 50mm ofthe manifold nuts. The flowconnection is clearly marked

    on the manifold (with theletter F) and the inletpipework should beconnected accordingly. If theelement is installed with theconnection reversed, it will

    vent inserted in the branch.

    Yorkshire manifolds enable the main flowand return in a heating system to bedivided into smaller radiator circuits

    giving improved system control, a simplesystem layout and keep circuit resistance low.Unlike more complicated systems, Yorkshiremanifolds are supplied as small basic units,which can be coupled together for largersystems. Alternatively the heating system canbezoned with a set of manifolds serving eachsector.

    Where to use Yorkshire manifoldsThere are three basic designs of manifold;

    Linear flow manifolds have soft copper tube

    outlets in 8mm or 10mm silver brazed into abrass header. The result is a straight throughmanifold with low flow resistance.

    The copper outlet tubes can be readily formedto the desired layout and connected to the

    radiator pipework by means of the YorkshirePotable capillary fittings provided. Connectionto the main distribution pipework is by meansof a Yorkshire joint in the brass header.

    Side entry manifolds have an integral solderring socket at one end, a male capillary end atthe other and compression outlets. This typeof manifold allows installers to bank togetherany combination of units as required.

    The Micrafold is also a side entry manifold butincorporates a divider thereby giving flow andreturn in one component.

    The Yorkshire accessories range includestwo specially developed fluxes traditionalcraftsmans flux and Yorkshire flux.

    Extensive work has been carried out by theindustry with the objective of defining thedesirable characteristics of plumbing productsincluding soldering fluxes. It is now a WaterByelaws requirement that soldering fluxesmust not support microbiological growth inpotable water supplies. In addition, anyresidue left in the pipework after solderingshould be non-corrosive and have negligible

    toxicity.The primary function of a soldering flux is toprevent oxidisation of the copper tube duringsoldering. This allows the molten solder towet the parent metals, creating a truemetallurgical bond. An efficient flux alsoensures that the maximum strength of the jointcan be achieved by aiding the distribution ofthe solder over the whole jointing surface.

    Advantages of traditional craftsmansflux and Yorkshire flux

    Traditional craftsmans flux and Yorkshire fluxare easy to use.

    Both fluxes will maintain their consistencyover a prolonged period of time, providingcontainer lids are always firmly replaced afteruse.

    Care should be taken not to introduce anycontaminants which may be transferred to the

    joint.

    Traditional craftsmans flux has excellentlubricating properties enabling close fitting

    joints to be readily assembled. This flux is also

    recommended for use with larger sized fittings.During normal heating at soft solderingtemperatures (approximately 250C) the fluxesare char resistant. They can therefore be usedwith all types and sizes of soft solder fittings.

    How to use traditional craftsmans andYorkshire fluxBefore applying the flux, ensure that theoutside of the tube and the inside of the fittinghave been thoroughly cleaned. Then applyadequate, but not excessive flux to the jointingsurfaces with a brush. Do not use the finger.

    The joint can now be assembled and all excessflux wiped off the outside. After heating allowthe assembly to cool and then thoroughly flushthe system, preferably with hot water. Bestresults are obtained when joints are heated assoon as possible after assembly. Any joints notheated during the working day should bedismantled, cleaned and refluxed prior toreassembly.

    External residues can be removed with a dampcloth. If this is neglected staining of thepipework may occur.

    Yorkshire cleaning pads are speciallyproduced from a highly abrasivesynthetic material for the effective

    cleaning of tube ends and fitting sockets prior

    to fluxing. The pad is not electricallyconductive and can be easily washed out withwater and reused should the material becomeclogged.

    Steel wool, a more traditional material usedfor cleaning tubes and fittings is available inbundles or pad form.

    the tube end are perfectlyclean. Yorkshire cleaningpads and steel wool providethe easiest way to achievethe required standard ofcleanliness.

    Heat resi stant mats

    Heat resistant mats are produced fromwoven ceramic fibres affording skirtings,paintwork or potentially flammable

    materials protection, when heating YorkshirePotable joints.

    Yorkshire heat resistant mats can be used toensure that floors are protected from soldersplashes and hot flux. They are useful forconserving heat in difficult situations.

    Asbestos free, the mats are available in twoqualities and are supplied in handy clip-closepolythene carrier bags.

    Pi pe cli ps and brackets

    Acomprehensive selection of pipe clips,stems and brackets for fixing copperpipe to a variety of surfaces is available

    from the Yorkshire accessories range.

    Saddle bands, single and two piece spacing clipsand pipe brackets are suitable for mountingcopper pipe, both horizontally or vertically.

    Where tubing needs to be mounted away froma surface, for example, where the tube needsto be insulated against heat or frost, Yorkshirepipe rings, used in conjunction with stems andbrackets are an ideal solution.

    Special two part pipe joist clips are alsoavailable which reduce the effects of vibrationfrom pumps and other components in thesystem and help maintain joist strength if fittedusing the purpose designed template whichprevents excessive or inaccurate saw cuts.

    The Aquadapt replaces the headwork of astopvalve with a combined shut-off valve,check valve and water meter connector,

    enabling the easy installation of water meters

    in existing dwellings without the need to cutinto pipework.

    With Aquadapt, all the installer has to do isremove the headwork of the existing incomingstopvalve, screw the Aquadapt into place, thenattach the meter.

    The Aquadapt is manufactured from gunmetalor DZR brass with some stainless steel andnon-metallic components.

    Aquadapt is UKWFBS listed.

    Where to use AquadaptThe Yorkshire Aquadapt is suitable for bothexisting and new properties. It can be used aboveor below ground and is available in sizes whichwill suit all commonly available stopvalvesconforming to BS 1010 Part 2 and BS 5433.

    Aquadapt will accept the following concentricmeters: Schlumberger P40M, Socam 501 l-Mand Kent MSM

    Installation1. Isolate the main supplying the stopvalvewhich is to be adapted.

    2. Remove headwork from the stopvalve. Havea container handy in case a small amount ofwater escapes from the pipework.

    3. Note whether a fibre washer or Oring sealhas been used to make the headwork or bodyseal. Select the same type of seal from the kitsupplied with Aquadapt. Place the new sealover the threaded portion of the Aquadapt body.

    4. Ensure that the injector tube is fitted to thebody and that the rubber sealing ring on thespigot has not been dislodged. Carefully screwthe adaptor into the stopvalve body by hand, then

    tighten until the gap between the adaptor andthe top of the stopvalve has closed. Do not overtighten. In the case of underground installations,the Yorkshire T bar assembly spanner (Cat NoAD30) should be used. For above groundinstallations, a 12" socket assembly spanner(Cat No AD31) should be used with a ratchetdrive to tighten the Aquadapt.

    5. Ensure that the valve handle is turned to theoff position before turning the mains back on.Check for leaks.Do not turn the valve on at this stage

    6. Screw the concentric meter into the top ofthe adaptor, hand tight. Ensure that the Orings on the meter are still in place.

    7. If a metering facility is not requiredimmediately, the Aquadapt can be blanked offusing a Yorkshire blanking plug (cat No AD34).

    8.The valve can now be turned on. If water isnot being drawn from the system, the meterpointer should be stationary.

    9.Turn on a tap to check the meter is workingcorrectly.

    Removal a nd refittingIf at any time there is a need to remove the meter,the valve should simply be shut off and the meterunscrewed. Water should only be lost from themeter itself when this procedure is carried out.

    If required, the adaptor can be removed andreplaced into the same stopvalve body withoutproblems. If there is a need to fit the adaptor toa different stopvalve, a new injector tube shouldbe used. Simply pull out the existing tube andreplace with a new one (12" cat No AD32, 34"cat No AD33).

    Horizontal mountingIf the Aquadapt is to bemounted horizontally a

    Yorkshire support bracket(Cat No AD37) should beused to provide additionalsupport for the Aquadaptand adjoining pipework.

    Underground installationIf the Aquadapt is to beinstalled externally, it shouldbe fitted within the boundarybox, the minimum size ofwhich must be 105mm (6")

    in diameter. In this situation,we recommend that theAquadapt is fitted with a

    Yorkshire extension handle(cat No AD35) to ensureeasy access and use.

    The Yorkshire valves range includes aselection of DZR quality plugcocks foruse with copper tube. Several patterns of

    plugcock are available, the majority have an

    oblong bore and are designed for use on lowpressure gas services with the remainderhaving a full round bore intended primarily foruse with low pressure water.

    Where to use Yorkshire plugcocksYorkshire plugcocks are designed to controlthe flow of gas or water in low pressureinstallations. Gas plugcocks are available withunion outlet and a drophead allowing theprofile of the valve to be lowered oncecommissioned. The full round bore valve canalso be supplied with a male BSP end.

    Size rangeYorkshire plugcocks are available in 15mm and22mm sizes. Plugcocks with male BSPconnections have 12" or 34" outlets.

    Working pressures and temperaturesPlugcocks are designed for low pressureinstallations and are suitable for use at thefollowing working pressures and temperatures.

    Standards and approvalsYorkshire plugcocks meet the requirements ofBS 1552 for use with first and second familygases.
