This is community theater at its nest.” For choir members Martin Stuart and Paul Libra, both of Burnsville, the play offers a chance to connect with their daughters. Stuart and his 8-year-old daughter Madeline are Prior Lake Players vets, having worked on four productions in the past. The experience, Stuart says, takes his relationship with Madeline to a different level. “She wrote me a valentine and put my part number on it: ‘To my dad: salesman number 5,’” Stuart laughs. Libra’s daughter Anna, also a chorus member, is 14. At that age, her father says, it can be difficult for a parent to keep a solid relationship with his child. “It’s been kind of neat that we’ve both been able to work on this,” he says. Even Dunning has a family member her son to work with. “It helps build unity in a family, I think,” she says. “It seems like families are going here and here and here, and it seems nice to be able to put all that business in one place.” A fitting partnership Todd Loose of Prior Lake signed on to the project last fall after the Players’ board of directors decided on “The Music Man.” The 36-year-old theater troupe had done the play before, and Loose thought it would be fun to go back to his theatrical roots. “My rst Prior Lake Players production was in 1993, and I sang bass in the barbershop quartet, and here I am singing bass in the barbershop quartet 16 years later,” he says. But this time around, Loose has a bit more responsibility. In addition to his on-stage role, Loose is now sitting in the director’s chair, albeit rarely. During rehearsals, Loose spends far more time coaching actors backstage and at times even stepping in to read lines for absent cast members. If the production is successful, a chunk of the credit should undoubtedly go to the chemistry between Loose and Dunning. When approached to direct the play, Loose says, he immediately thought of Dunning. “I thought ‘The Music Man,’ that would be fun,” he explains. “And Kay and I directed ‘Nunsense’ a few years ago, so I called her up,” he says. It was a little bit of a hard sell for Dunning, who had little interest in the play. She conceded, Loose says, after he reminded her of the fun they had in the past. “We already had that relationship together and we work well together, I think,” he says. Now, after months of work on the project casting began in December and the rst rehearsal was Jan. 5 Dunning is a “Music Man” convert. “You know, I wasn’t a huge fan of [the play] when we started and now I really do [like it],” says Dunning, who attributes her newfound enjoyment to a stellar crew. “It’s a great cast. We got lucky with this cast.” The play Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” is the story of Harold Hill, a con man pretending to be a band leader who plans to skip town after taking the money of unsuspecting River City, Iowa residents, who think they’re buying band equipment. Hill is played by Prior Lake High School Choir Director Tom Hassig, who’s reprising the role he played 16 years ago. The Broadway production earned ve Tony Awards in 1957, including best musical. The accompanying musical album won a Grammy. The Prior Lake Players will have performances Feb. 27 and 28 and March 6, 7, 8, 13 and 14, all in the Twin Oaks Middle School auditorium. Ticket order forms are available at the Prior Lake Area Chamber of Commerce or by writing plpmusicman@ mchsi.com. Tickets also are available at the door.
