IMMUNISATION

SETTLING YOUR CHILD INTO THE CENTRE

WHAT TO BRING

MEALS

In accordance to EC regulations we need to site all children's Imunisation certificate (whether or not they have been immunised).

Please bring your child's Immunisation certficate for staff to record information onto our Immunisation register.

Young children can often find it difficult to settle into a new and unfamiliar environment. This can be very distressing for both the child and parents therefore it is important you visit as often as possible in the weeks prior to starting ensuring that you visit at least three times. This allows both child and parents the time to get acquainted with the teachers and the routines of the centre.

When your child starts at the Centre it is important that you say "Goodbye" before leaving. There maybe a few tears but in the long run it is best for the child as we can reassure them once you have left Mum and Dad will come back later. Once you say goodbye it is important that you follow through. If you leave an upset child please feel free to phone us to put your mind at ease.

Please ensure your child has atleast one full change of clothes and underwear. During winter they need a warm jacket and hat while during summer they will need a sunhat. Appropriate footwear is required at all times. Please ensure that all clothing and belongings are named.

Please ensure your child brings their own lunch each day. Please ensure your child brings a healthy lunch such as a sandwiches, yoghurt etc. Also include one fruit.

Our staff takes the fruits out of each child's lunch box and cuts and peels them for all the children to share and have a variety to eat each day.

Please notify the teachers if there are any foods that yor child is allergic to.

To foster good eating habits teachers will sit with the children at meal times and model good table manners and the eating of healthy food.

TOILETING AND NAPPY CHANGE

SLEEP ROUTINES

ILLNESS

ACCIDENTS

For children still in nappies parents are asked to provide enough nappies for the day or you can bring a supply of nappies clearly named and put them in the cupboard in the nappy changing area. You also need to provide your own baby wipes. When the nappy or baby wipes supply is low a note will be made on the sign in register to remind you to bring some more. Nappy changes are recorded on the chart in the changing area.

When your child is ready to toilet train we will support you in this process just let us know and discuss further with teachers.

Please bring a couple of blankets from home for your child to use. These will be placed in their own blanket bag and blankets will need to be taken home for laundering and brought back for use.

Toddlers individual sleep patterns are retained as much as possible. They sleep in cots or beds, with individual bedding, which is provided by the centre.

Older children have a rest time after lunch or a sleep if needed.

Children's sleeping times are recorded on the sleep chart daily for you to view.

If your child is not well please keep them at home. A phone call at the beginning of the day would be appreciated if your child is sick and will not be in.

We have a policy requiring a clear 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before your child can return to the centre. If your child becomes ill while at the centre you will be contacted and asked to collect them. Your child will be kept comfortable and under close supervision until someome is able to pick them up.

If your child has an accident it will be recorded in the Accident Book located by the sign in register.

If your child's name is highlighted on the register this means you need to sign the accident report. If your child is involved in a serious accident you will remain with your child until such time as you can get to them.

BIRTHDAYS

INFORMATION SHARING

PROFILE BOOKS

TRANSITION GROUP

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

We encourage the celebration of your child's birthday at the Centre.

Parents are welcome to bring in a birthday cake and/or food to share at morning tea or lunch. Parents are most welcome to join us or if unable we will take photo's of your child and put in their profile book to record the celebration.

It is important that the information is shared about the child and their needs. If the parents feel that there is anything that needs to be shared please talk to one of the staff or provide it in writing to the Supervisor.

Staff are always available to give a verbal account of your child's day as well as regular newsletters and written notices on the notice boards.

Each child will have a profile book in which their growth and development is recorded while at the centre. The profile books are available for you and your child to look at at any time. Please feel free to add your own stories and comments to your child's profile book. We welcome story's from home.

Every afternoon we have our Transition group for our four year olds. This time is used to prepare children for primary school. This will involve activities that support children in literacy, numeracy and self help skills that they will need when starting school.

We have a Behaviour Management policy which we recommend you read so that you know the procedure that is followed at Fakatouato Language School. We believe that children need clear firm boundaries with clearly defined consenquences. A simple distraction technique usually works but if a child's behaviour becomes a distraction then they may need to be removed from the situation. If the behaviour continues then the Supervisor will talk to the parents and together will work out some strategies that will work for the child

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

CENTRE POLICIES

CIVIL DEFENCE

PARENTS RESPONSIBILITIES

There is no specific requirements for parent involvement but we do encourage parents to be involved in centre life e.g. helping with trips, skills or experiences which you could share with the children or if you know of other people that could come and visit etc.

If you have anything that you feel would be of interest please feel free to talk to any of the staff.

We have a parents' set of centre policies located under the Parent Noticeboard. It is important that parents are familiar with these policies and understand the procedures of the centre.

Every year we review our policies and procedures and we would welcome your input. All it would take would be a few minutes of your time to read the relevant policies and give your feedback.

In the event of an emergency we will keep your child at the centre until you are able to collect them. We will keep children at the centre for up to 24 hours unless otherwise directed by the Civil Defence authorities in which case we will leave a notice on the centre door to notify parents where we have evacuated to. If children have not been collected within 24 hours they will be taken to the nearest Civil Defence centre.
