Dear Parents/Carers, Staff and Students Santa Clara School is founded upon the tradition of the Dominican Sisters. The staff are committed to providing a high level of pastoral care and quality education for students. As a Catholic school, we uphold the values of Jesus Christ. SANTA CLARA IRON MAN – MR ANDREW BOXWELL CONGRATULATIONS to our own hero, Mr Andrew Boxsell, for competing in the half Iron Man Triathlon at the last weekend in Busselton. I was delighted and thrilled and cheered Andrew on as he completed a 2 km ocean swim, followed by a 90 km bike ride and finished off with a 21 km run.

WOW! An amazing feat achieved only by the fittest.

Well done Mr Boxsell! We are proud of you! MOTHER’S DAY On behalf of our staff, I take this opportunity to wish all mothers a very happy ‘Mother’s Day’. Below is a reflection that I’d like to share.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

A Mother’s Love is something that no one can explain. It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain.

It is endless and unselfish And enduring come what may,

For nothing can destroy it or take that love away. It is patient and forgiving

When all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters

Even though the heart is breaking. It believes beyond believing

When the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty

Of the rarest, brightest gems. It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation. A many splendour miracle man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand. I extend a big “Thank You” to the P&F for hosting the Mother’s Day breakfast and also to the dads for the cook up.

NAPLAN NAPLAN (National Assessment Programme for Literacy and Numeracy) will be commencing for the Year 3 and 5 students in Week Four starting on Tuesday 12 May and concluding on Thursday 14 May. Below is a link where students of Year 3 and Year 5 have free unlimited access to NAPLAN practice material. Click on this link to access http://www.studyladder.com.au/learn/naplan.

STUDENT SUPERVISION DURING SCHOOL HOURS At a staff meeting we reviewed our Duty of Care roles and responsibilities and examined how we could further enhance the quality of care we provide for our students. Teachers have a legal responsibility to supervise and care for the school children. A Duty of Care Policy is laid out under the terms and conditions of the teacher’s employment. Students who are marked present on the school roll are supervised in both the classroom and the playground, during school hours. The school gates are opened at 8.20 am and children are to have left the premises by 3.20 pm, unless they are involved in extra curricula activities. The responsibility of supervision outside of these hours remains with the parents. After school hours and during weekends, students are not permitted in the school grounds to play as this is then termed as trespassing and legal formalities can be implemented. If a student is with their parents on the school premises, out of school hours, the Parents are responsible for the care and safety of the child. Children riding their bicycles/scooters must wear helmets. Please note that no child/ren will be allowed on the school premises prior to 8.20 am, except if they are enrolled at the Out of School Care.

PARENT SIGN-IN BOOK PROCEDURE As a school, it is our duty to ensure that all students who attend Santa Clara Catholic School are provided with the maximum duty of care. It is necessary to be informed of where all students are within the school, within school hours. To enable this to happen, currently students who leave the school grounds during school time must be ‘signed out’ and ‘signed in’ on their return. To ensure that teachers, including specialist subject teachers, are carrying out their ‘Duty of Care’, we ask parents who need to take children out of school prior to home time to please adhere to this request. Upon ‘signing a child’ out from the school, a parent will be provided with a ‘Green Slip’ that needs to be given to the teacher. This way the teacher is sure that permission has been given for the child to leave the school grounds. All parent helpers and/or visitors to the school MUST sign the Visitors Book in the office. We ask for parents continued cooperation in this matter. God bless Richard Win Pe Principal

ARCHBISHOP’S LIFELINK LAUNCH Last Thursday, two students from Year Six, Connor Chehab and Maeve Thiel, represented the school and attended the Archbishop’s LifeLink Launch for 2015. The Launch was held at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School. At the Launch, Most Rev Timothy Costelloe SDB (Archbishop of Perth), personally communicated his vision and plans for LifeLink Day 2015. Connor and Maeve also had the opportunity to ask Bishop Don Sproxton and Archbishop Tim Costelloe questions they wished to pose. Well done, to both Connor and Maeve, for representing the school.

LIFE-LINK – CATHOLIC CARING AGENCIES LifeLink Catholic Caring Agencies reach out to 34,000 Western Australians in need each year. LifeLink Agencies are making a very real difference in people’s lives.

LifeLink is not a welfare agency, it is the charitable organisation which fundraises and works on behalf of all of the social service agencies established by the Archdiocese of Perth. In this way, the welfare agencies focus on their primary objective - to continue a “mission of care” to people in need within the community, and Lifelink raises much needed funds to support their valuable work. LifeLink is a respected and recognised charity through which the Church conducts professional and ethical fundraising appeals, with funds raised directed towards social service provision. Some of the Agencies include Emmaus Community, Catholic Outreach, Centacare Employment and Training, The Shopfront, Centrecare Inc, IdentityWA and Daydawn Advocacy Service. On Wednesday, 3 June, the children will be LINKING-UP for LifeLink Day 2015. Children will be asked to donate a $2 donation to purchase a template of six links. The children will then colour their own six links. On Wednesday, 3 June, each class will LINK-UP their links and it will be determined which class has the longest chain. At the end of the day, all class chains will be joined together to see how long our school chain will be.

Please remember, all funds will go to this important Catholic organisation, an organisation helping Real People, Real need, with Real Stories.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL NEWS

Hello Everyone The term has got off to a great start with most students wearing full winter uniform; a reminder that the winter uniform includes ties for boys and girls are asked to wear ribbons or hair ties to match the school colours. With the arrival of some cooler weather and cold mornings I would ask parents to check that they have clearly labelled students’ jumpers; this time of the year is notorious for lost jumpers and a build up of lost property! Some coming events and more information follows. NAPLAN: NAPLAN or National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy will take place for Years Three and Five students next week. Flyers were sent home with parent information in Week One of this term. This national assessment is an assessment of skills, not content and I would like to remind parents and students that these tests are one aspect of student assessment on one day. I strongly recommend parents take a low key approach and avoid unnecessary hype or focus on these tests. I have reminded the Year Five students that they participate in this test for approximately four hours every two years so it is a very small part of what they do and who they are! It is one test and certainly not a measure of how hard they work or engage in their schooling on a day to day basis. MOTHER’S DAY: I would like to wish all the mothers in our school a very happy Mother’s Day for next Sunday. I am really looking forward to the P&F Mother’s Day breakfast. A big thank you to the P&F who are putting this on and support us in so many ways.

ABSENTEE NOTES OR EMAILS: Thank you parents for supporting us by emailing or sending in notes when your children are absent. If you have not sent in notes or emails for any previous absences please ensure you do so as soon as possible.

CYBER-SAFETY – CYBER BULLYING: You don't need a black eye to be bullied. “Talk, Report, Support” is the slogan recommended by the Cyber-Safety website. So what is cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is using technology to deliberately and repeatedly bully someone. By reporting it, talking about it and supporting each other we can stop it. What does Cyberbullying look like? It can include:

• abusive texts and emails • hurtful messages, images or videos • imitating others online to set them up • excluding others online • nasty online gossip and chat

If you or your child need support the following link to the cyber-smart website is for teens and adolescents:

http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/teens/how%20do%20I%20deal%20with/cyberbullying.aspx.

Once again have a very happy day on Sunday mums.

God bless everyone.

YEAR THREE CLASS NEWS

FOOTY MATHS IN YEAR THREE

What a great start Term Two has been for the Year Three class! The Year Threes have enthusiastically

commenced their Footy Maths and Footy Journals programme. Footy Maths investigates all aspects of the

Year Three Maths curriculum with a variety of interesting activities using The West Australian newspaper.

The weekly Footy Journal activities enable students to write about their favourite team and the players they

love watching. One of the pleasing aspects is the students’ enthusiasm whenever the activities are

performed in class.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILATION EXCURSION

Last week, the Year Three children visited the Schoenstatt Shrine as part of

their Religious Education programme. The day was extremely well

organised by Sister Lisette. The students visited the Shrine chapel, made

mobile phones that connected to God, and made a beautiful pasture for their

lambs. Special thanks to Mr Mavros, Mrs Sureshkumar, Mrs Munut, Mr

Spiegl and Mrs Arcaro for their help throughout the day. It was pleasing to

hear Sister Lisette pay tribute to all the children on how they behaved

throughout the day. Well done, Year Threes.
