90 IRISH TATLER SEPTEMBER 2015

The iconic 50s quiff has gotten a modern makeover for autumn winter.

From Elvis’s sleek and shiny quiff of steel to the pompadour of the 1940s, the quiff transcends both gender and generation

as a signature beauty style. Perhaps it is the versatility of the venerable quiff that means this beauty trend has stayed on point. Notoriously androgynous, at Missoni stylists played with layering quiffs toward the front of the head to create a texturised, grungy up do. At Roksanda, models sported a sleek side quiff paired with untouched flowing locks. Zero + Maria Cornejo adopted a simpler, more traditional quiff with added volume.

Geraldine O’Grady, stylist at Sean Taaffe hair salon in Killarney (Seantaaffe.com), says that there is no limit to the number of ways you can style a quiff. “From a sleek, slick backed, wet look to high groomed to tousled; the choice is yours.” To achieve the perfect quiff, O’Grady advises first washing the hair with volumising shampoo and conditioner. When the hair is dry, section off a piece from the front of the head and backcomb. “Using a fine-tooth comb or backcombing

brush, hold a section of hair at the ends and lift it straight into the air, above your head. Place the comb at the halfway point between your head and your hand and tease the hair downwards.”

To secure and style your quiff, “take a soft-bristled brush and lightly brush the hair back”. The key is to make the outside of the quiff look as smooth as possible. To finish, simply “gather the ends of the backcombed hair at the crown of your head, twist them once and pin in place”. While this style is extremely versatile, O’Grady says, “If you have an oblong or long face shape, chances are the quiff is not for you as this look adds length to the face.”
