“The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian” Identifies and backgrounds the decision to leave the reservation. The candidate uses appropriate quotes but further analysis is possible and the overall discussion is heavily reliant on plot. In paragraph four, more observations are offered but some interpretations might be challenged. Analysis towards the end is underwhelming and not fully realised. The effect on a character is addressed but is incomplete.

“Noughts and crosses” A straightforward response in which both parts of the question are addressed. Callum’s decision is explained with relevant quotes that give us insight into his thinking and feelings. The ramifications of his decision are made evident. But the discussion remains firmly text-centred. There is no attempt to go “beyond the lines”, and the analysis is therefore competent but limited.
