TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Guardians: It has been a very busy and productive first term at Hartman. We have had a number of students participate in a variety of sports teams. Several students qualified for regionals in Cross Country running. The co-ed Flag Football team won the regionals! The student council was elected and they have run several anti bullying initiatives in the school. Both intermediate girls and boys participated on Volleyball teams. Staff ran several sessions of intramural ball hockey for junior students at lunch. Stay tuned for more intramurals in the New Year! There have been numerous Drama practices and performances for our Good News Assemblies each month. We raised a sizeable donation for the Terry Fox Foundation early in the year and then again in October, the “Scare Hunger” food drive resulted in a truck load of food donations for our community. The play leaders in Grade 4 ran wonderful outdoor games during morning recesses. There have been a host of exciting events happening in the library; author visits, 3D printing, The Hour of Code and our very own green screen! In the New Year Hartman will have a co-ed Junior Volleyball Team as well as Intermediate girls and boys basketball teams. Thanks to all of our wonderful staff who make these opportunities available to our students! The Parent Council has been busy planning activities for the New Year. They got the ball rolling in the fall with Fundscrip and Popcorn Tuesdays. We had several classes visit the Vivian Outdoor Recreation Centre and participate in outdoor games and the environmental education programs. Others classes travelled to the Safety Village and learned more about keeping safe both inside and out of the home. Under the leadership of Ms. Richardson’s grade 5/6 class we have raised money and collected clothing donations for the Syrian refugees. Similarly, the mitten tree in the front foyer and the food donations will help support families in our own community who are in need. We have also welcomed several new staff during the Term: Ms. Grace Chan in FDK, Ms. Jan Huismans Grade 3 LTO, Ms. Christina Russell Grade 7 LTO, Ms. Jessie Salter CC Class LTO, Ms. Rhonda Hopkin Caretaker As we approach the winter break, we hope that you are surrounded by family and friends this holiday season.
We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year! Your Administrative Partners in Education, Stephen Helston (Principal) and Lynne Girdler (Vice-Principal)

Hartman needs your help to save a Polar Bear!
Our healthy schools I-Walk theme for
January is called “Polar Bear Walk” and
January is a great month to show respect
for the environment, concern for global
warming and its threat to the polar bear
population.
Students are invited to bring a polar bear stuffed animal to school on Wednesdays all month long! If you do not have a polar bear, students can bring other polar region animals or make their own polar bear. A photo mounted on paper and taped to a pencil makes a handy polar bear to carry to school.
Great news, last year Hartman proudly adopted five endangered animals like the
Meerkat, the Red Panda, the Arctic Fox, the
Snowy Owl, the Snow Leopard and the
Polar Bear. Some grade five students have
already decided that they want to sell items
again this year at recess for a "toonie" to
help towards the cause! That's awesome!
It costs about $50.00 to adopt one
endangered animal from the “World Wildlife
Federation”. So let’s see how many animals
we can adopt!
The class that collects the most money in donations will receive a FREE GYM
PERIOD courtesy of Mr. Edwards!
Whenever you go to school, please walk or park and walk a block!
I Walk… Do You?
Several classes went to the Vivian Outdoor Recreation Centre to participate in environmental awareness activities.
Mr N’s Grade 1 class in front of the “Kindness Art Installation” created by the student council. Students in the school wrote messages of kindness to their friends.
Cross Country Team @ Area Meet Students from grades 3-8 trained for several weeks leading up to the meet. A big Hartman Hero Congratulations goes out to the students who went on to represent Hartman at the Regionals; Emily K, Tyler N, Melissa Y, Avery D, Riley S, Alexa D, Thomas D
Intermediate Boys and Girls Volleyball teams participated in the Area tournament.
Making a Difference for Syrian Refugees As a culminating activity in social studies, Mrs. Richardson’s Grade 5 / 6 class looked at the question, “What, if anything, is your responsibility as a Canadian citizen when a global crisis arises?”. Students decided that the situation with Syrian children needed their attention. They were tasked with creating a realistic action plan to help - created by kids to help kids.
Students worked together to find ways to raise both awareness and dollars. Some examples of action plans included a clothing drive, morning announcements, slideshows, posters, a holiday gift table, beaded necklaces, Rainbow Loom bracelets, raffle baskets created from gently used or new toy donations and a website that was linked to major Canadian charities
At the end of the project, students surpassed the goal of $300.00, and all money raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the government. The class wishes to thank the Hartman community for their generosity and caring and encourages everyone to become a global citizen!
Hartman Public Schools joins the Twitterverse! You can follow us for updates by searching: @hartmanheroes In the New Year we will be transforming our Newsletter into a weekly blog, watch for more on that in January.
Once again Hartman
created the Wall of Honour so that families could share personal stories of family members who have been involved in war efforts in the past. It was a moving tribute to people who deserve to be remembered and honoured for their contributions.
Coffee and Chat We will be hosting regular ‘Coffee and Chat’ sessions with the school administration. This will be held the first Friday of each month from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and again from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. These will be held in the conference room or front foyer, and are intended to provide an opportunity for parents to speak with us around questions or concerns about school life at Hartman, and how and why we run the school the way we do. We are always open to suggestions, so this invitation goes out to all parents. Matters of a personal nature regarding your children should still be directed through the teacher. If you are interested, just email our secretary, [email protected] to add your name to the list. We’d prefer to keep the numbers around 5 or 6 per session, in order to address all matters that come up. Yes, we will provide the coffee and snacks! We will host our next Coffee and Chat on Friday, January 8th. The dates for all sessions are below: Friday, December 4 Friday, January 8 Friday, February 5 Friday, March 4 Friday April 1 Friday, May 6 Friday, June 3
We hope you will consider joining us and discussing daily life at Hartman PS!

French Immersion Registration
French Immersion registration will take place from January 15 -
February 12, 2016
Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at
French Immersion schools on January 14, 2016 at 7 p.m. FI registration will begin
January 15, 2016. In order to streamline the registration process, parents or
guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2016, and wishing to
enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call their home school office (where your child
currently attends) and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office
Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or
guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their
address to your designated French Immersion school to register between January 15
and February 12, 2016. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrolment
information or to pre-register.
Kindergarten Registration to Commence January 15, 2016 Kindergarten registration will commence on January 15, 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. Registration forms are available on the YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children who turn four or five years old during 2015, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local school.
