CWIC 2021

The annual CW International Conference (CWIC) is a must-attend conference for business leaders in the wireless industry. Each year it attracts hundreds of Founders, Directors and C-Suite Executives to network and influence the topical issues of the industry.

WIRELESS IN DIGITAL AND CIRCULAR ECONOMIES

Wireless connectivity has become a foundation for the world economy. While the industry evolves its deployment strategies to maximise adoption across consumer and industrial sectors, government policies are working to secure its contribution to socioeconomics and environmental sustainability.

Beyond the current take-make-waste extractive industrial model, a circular economy aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits.

CWIC 2021 will consider the value of the wireless network within digital and circular economies, exploring innovations and ideas that maximise wireless’ potential to improve the future, including:

• The delivery of progressive services across a variety of sectors • Contribution to socioeconomic growth • The reduction of wireless’ environmental impact

Are existing technologies, regulations and deployment models for connectivity delivering the level of service, value and sustainability required, or is a change in approach needed?

We are delighted to bring CWIC 2021 to Duxford Airfield; a location steeped in history and home to some of the most iconic planes including the Lancaster, Spitfire, Concorde and Vulcan bomber. Duxford Airfield, built in 1917 became one of the earliest RAF stations, home to the Royal Flying Corps it was a Sector Station during the Battle of Britain, responsible for directing squadrons into battle.

We will be using the full range of space including the AirSpace as our exhibition area and the Conservation Hall for the auditorium, both huge spaces enabling comfortable social distancing.

Whilst we are excited to get back to live events we understand not everyone can join us in person so this year we will be going hybrid. We will be blending live talks with on demand content, all available in our conference platform.

SESSION THEMES

#CWIC2021 | 7

The outbreak of COVID-19 worldwide and the behavioural changes that it has imposed on us all has dramatically accelerated our uptake of digital services. From online shopping to online GP appointments, to remote working to online learning for students, the rapid uptake of these services is all underpinned by connectivity. In the case of wireless, a large amount of that connectivity is provided by the mobile industry. But with mobile connectivity now touching many more parts of the economy beyond smartphone services for consumers, particularly with 5G, is it time to rethink the value that mobile networks deliver to us all and, in return, whether nations need to revisit their policies and engagement with the mobile industry to ensure the sustainability of this industry in everyone’s best interest?

KEYNOTE: THE REAL VALUE OF MOBILE NETWORKS

The near universal coverage of non-terrestrial networks is offering new solutions that will revolutionise industries, from supply chain tracking in logistics to land monitoring in agriculture. Elsewhere, almost certainly wireless will have a role to play in getting high speed broadband connectivity to UK homes in rural locations where fibre is too costly. And at the same time, the UK’s emergency services, requiring high reliability coverage in all parts of the UK, are transitioning to the Emergency Services Network (ESN) being delivered by BT/EE.

This plenary will explore the potential of satellites in improving coverage and delivering progressive services. It will ask what role satellites might play in these projects compared to terrestrial networks, and where else might they enhance our digital and circular economies?

PLENARY: EXTENDING THE REACH OF MOBILE IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY - ARE SATELLITE & HYBRID NETWORKS THE ANSWER TO CONNECTING THE UNCONNECTED?

SESSION THEMES

#CWIC2021 | 7

This panel session will debate the role of mobile in environmental sustainability at 3 levels:

• Making the mobile industry greener - Vodafone has already

committed to reduce the company’s global carbon emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2040. They have also committed to support the move towards a more circular economy by reusing, reselling or recycling 100% of their network waste by 2025. But will other wireless service providers follow this lead, what are the challenges in actually achieving these targets and will making mobile networks greener have much impact on the planet’s future?

• Impact of mobile networks on our landscape - Environmental

sustainability also goes beyond carbon emissions and recycling equipment to considering the impact that we as humans have on our landscape. Are mobile networks adding too much to the clutter appearing on our streets and countryside? Is there a better approach we can take to deploying mobile infrastructure to encourage more sharing and reuse of existing sites and street furniture?

• Using emerging wireless services to support action on climate

change – The Internet of Things promises to connect a range of unmanned sensors and devices, from air quality monitoring stations, to smart traffic control systems to autonomous vehicles. How integral a part is wireless in society being able to implement planned actions on climate change?

PANEL: THE ROLE OF MOBILE NETWORKS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

How do we generate a sustainable approach to mobile network deployment that maximises all value elements? How do we ensure the public benefits whilst balancing the need to satisfy the commercial side? This debate considers the implications for national and more localised infrastructure, and whether clearer strategies and support for mobile networks is needed in order to deliver all elements of value across the sectors examined in the individual tracks.

DEBATE: COMMERCIAL SUCCESS IS MORE IMPORTANT FOR WIRELESS NETWORKS THAN PUBLIC BENEFIT

TRACK THEMES

#CWIC2021 | 8

What are the business drivers for wireless in manufacturing, logistics and digital supply chains?

Manufacturing and supply chains undergo regular changes to drive up efficiencies. But the digitisation of shopfloors and supply chains, underpinned by wireless technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), will create a step change.

This track will use real-life examples to reflect on how, if components and products are to be tracked throughout the supply chain and manufacturing processes (indeed their entire life cycle), businesses can incorporate wireless into products, packaging and processes in an environmentally sustainable way, as well as what the networks that these masses of devices connect to might look like and who will run them.

MANUFACTURING AND LOGISTICS

Will media and entertainment be the anchor case that sustains the mobile industry?

It is widely thought that MNOs will focus on their traditional, consumer-driven customer base for 5G, at least initially, and try to maintain, or even drive up, revenues via media and entertainment services which showcase the higher performance of 5G. Yet given the global use of the internet (including gadgets and supporting systems) has a carbon footprint equivalent to that of the airline industry, how can the wireless sector minimise the impact of media service consumption on the environment?

This track will examine advanced wireless use cases within the media and entertainment sector, but also ask questions such as how, in a sector where content is king, will the mobile industry prevent itself from becoming just a data pipe? How might operators adapt advanced consumer media experiences to drive new enterprise applications? And how can the environmental impact of media and entertainment services be minimised?

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE

What is the role of wireless in providing sustainable health and social care and tackling the “Digital Divide”?

Governments, public bodies and industry are starting to realise the high socio-economic value that connectivity brings. “Digital Poverty” or the “Digital Divide” are terms used to recognise the difference that connectivity can make to individuals, households and businesses. The link between digital poverty and economic poverty and the associated social and healthcare challenges is clear. Elsewhere, connectivity can enable health and social services to be delivered in the home. These services range across virtual GP appointments, medicine intake monitoring, health device data sharing and much more – all focused on improving health and reducing the burden on the health service.

This track will examine the role of wireless in society and in the delivery of novel health services and ask whether existing commercially-driven deployment models for wireless are working well enough to deliver these socially motivated services or is a change in approach needed?

The move towards shared infrastructure models in mobile network provision - is there a sustainability silver lining?

Flat revenues for mobile service providers in developed nations continue to put pressure on infrastructure costs. Faced with ever-growing expectations from subscribers that require costly network upgrades, and without the pay back of higher ARPUs, two trends are emerging: firstly, the rise of tower providers who have been increasingly acquiring sites and structures from MNOs and broadcasters; secondly the virtualisation and cloudification of the mobile network so that network can be run in third party data centres. Both of these trends mean that the industry is moving towards acquiring access to network infrastructure and assets ‘on demand’.

This track will explore this transition towards ‘on demand’ shared mobile infrastructure, its potential to reduce overprovisioning of equipment and clutter on our streetscapes, and other sustainability silver linings.
