After the production company, Focus Features is presented the camera begins to follow the washed out grey curb which leads to a person crouching down. There is a non-diegetic slow tinny piece of music quietly playing in the background, it sounds like china hitting together delicately. The camera slows at the shoes and then blurs in and out to then see an ECU of the boy’s face. After holding and focusing on the boy we cut to a long shot of the scenery, this is our ES. The boy remains in the same position again, suggesting he’s been there for some time, to the right is what looks to be a body lying in the water. Suggesting she is dead it makes the audience wonder why he is doing nothing to help.

The camera begins a slow zoom towards the boys face starting at a medium CU and then cuts to a POV showing the girls legs which also zooms in, then continues with him staring in deep thought and cuts to show her wavy, blonde hair in the river water, another shot of him, and now we reach a CU of the boy. There is a continuous zoom inward in all of these shots portraying the curiosity escalating. It cuts to the girl’s arm displaying several blue china bracelets, her fingers are creating ripples in the water. There is a graphic match where the next shot is the arm with the bracelets (suggesting it’s the same girl) putting a slip of paper into a locker. The non-diegetic music is still playing until arm is shown putting the note in the locker then the music is interrupted by a diegetic school bell. The audience knows this is a school bell from the lockers and background people with rucksacks. The music does not continue.

The title BRICK appears at 1.03 minutes, the white writing on the black allow it to stand out. This is the first opening credit we see, by having other names appear it may break the serious atmosphere or make you miss out on seeing important things, like the blue bracelets. There is a diegetic hum of chatter and footsteps and lockers opening. The camera tracks downwards beside the lockers and sits on the ground watching the feet of someone approaching. The person is wearing the same shoes as the boy in the opening shot so we know they’re the same person. The note falls to the ground and the boy picks it up. It is as if this was planned because the camera was ready to catch the fall. This suggests to the audience that someone is watching his movements. The next shot is a wide angled ELS which shows him looking around, he looks extremely isolated and vulnerable next to the large wall of lockers and huge structure of the building.

This is a POV shot presenting the note which states a time and place. The next shot is a MCU of a sign post with that address on and you see the boy waiting and then look at his watch which shows it’s quarter to one. The phone in the telephone booth rings and he looks above the camera (HA) towards the booth and gets up to answer it. The boy is dressed casually and has glasses which stereotypically mean is smart. There is an ECU of the phone handle which he takes the phone from, he says nothing and a girl’s voice speaks, “Brendan?”. We now know our characters name. He says “Emily?” – clearly the two are acquainted with each other as she says “yeah”. This is the two minute mark.
