Salary satisfaction among profes- sionals has fallen across the Middle East by two percentage points, accord- ing to a new study. The average monthly salary dif- fered considerably from country to country across the Middle East and North Africa, research conducted by job site Bayt.com said. It said Qatar eclipsed the UAE in terms of the biggest salaries, with more than a third of Qatari profes- sionals, 39 per cent, earning between $3,001 (Dh 11,013) and $8,000 each month. The figure was 37 per cent for the UAE. Overall, professionals across the Middle East said the cost of living had increased by 24 per cent, yet the aver- age salary increased by only seven per cent – more than two-thirds less. In the UAE, respondents said living costs had increased by 22 per cent while the average salary increase was only six per cent. Matching the regional average, only five per cent of UAE residents were found to be highly satisfied with their remuneration. The picture across the rest of the Gulf and wider Middle East was simi- lar – with a peak of seven per cent of professionals highly satisfied with their salaries in Qatar, while the fig- ure dropped to a low of only two per cent in Syria. Unsurprisingly, the Gulf has the highest number of professionals earn- ing top tier salaries, in excess of $8,000 each month: 12 per cent in Qatar, 10 per cent in the UAE, seven per cent in Bahrain, six per cent in Kuwait and three per cent in Saudi Arabia and Oman. by Don Asoka Wijewardena Natural Resources and Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday said that the United Nations Organization General Secretary Ban Ki-moon was likely to appoint a Committee to investi- gate the alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka. Despite President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s request last week that the UN desist from interfer- ing with the internal affairs of other countries, the UN would still go ahead with the appointment of that Committee, Ranawaka told a press conference at the Mahaweli Centre. He said President Rajapaksa had spoken to the UN Secretary General over the phone last Thursday. Minister Ranawaka said the UN was being swayed by the Eelam lobby. He said that the UN would never appoint committees to investi- gate human rights vio- lations in Afganistan and Iraq, but was in the process of appoint- ing one to investigate human rights viola- tions in Israel. Around 2 million refugees in Afganistan had been suffering from various health complications due to war- fare, he said. Ranawaka said that the UN Charter did not provide for the appointment of committees to investigate the internal affairs of member states. Petroleum Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie said that SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem had made false statements about the UPFA government to the Muslim commu- nity and as a result the UPFA government did not receive some Muslim votes at the Presidential election. The Muslim community now has realized that they had been mis- led and they vowed to support the UPFA at the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Minister Fowzie said. Construction and Engineering Services Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne said that the UPFA government would receive a steamroller majority at the upcoming election. The gov- ernment had formulated a set of plans which would develop the country. The educational system would be changed and geared for job opportunities in the international job market. Dr Senaratne added that the government planned to alleviat- ing poverty by 2016 as the coun- try was making headway both economically and socially. It was certain that the UPFA govern- ment would receive a two-third majority to amend the Constitution. Proportional rep- resentation would be scrapped and the old electoral system reintroduced, he said. by Lalaji Manawadu AMBALANGODA: “Ours is the one and only organisation which gives loans to members even if they are over 70 years.
