FOrEwOrd

A very warm welcome to our 2020 festival! We celebrate music, art, culture and life through live performance and want everyone who takes part to have as positive an experience as possible. Art is for sharing, and audiences are just as much a part of our event as performers. Our festival is for fun, enjoyment and positivity. We aim to energise participants, listeners and motivate through encouragement. We are not staging a series of gladiatorial sporting events. We are not setting up gruelling academic assessments. On the contrary, the festival exists to inspire. I am reminded of the motto of the Aberdeen and North East of Scotland Music Festival: ‘Not to gain a prize or defeat a rival, but to pace one another on the road to excellence’. It is poignant and fitting to share a love of music and speech with others, and to come together with like minded souls in harmony.

I know adjudicators, performers, teachers, families and friends alike will all have a memorable and wonderful week

Murray McLachlanHonorary President

FestivalConcert-Saturday 14 March, 2pm, at The Cinema, Newton Stewart. Tickets, which are £5 for adults and free for children and performers, can be reserved by contacting Christina Montgomery on 07814 084899 or bought at the door on the day. Winners will be contacted during the week if they are needed in the concert.

At the start of each session the Announcer will introduce the committee member on duty. This committee member will be responsible for the registration sheet and is the point of contact for performers and audience members to address any queries or concerns.

Gradings will be awarded to performers in competitive classes as follows:

90+ Outstanding ‘An exceptional performance, both technically and artistically’87-89 Distinction ‘An excellent performance technically and artistically’84-86 Commended ‘A convincing performance technically and artistically’81-83 Merit ‘A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability’78-80 Moderate ‘A performance showing development of technique and/or communication75-77 Fair ‘A performance limited in its communication’

Neither performers nor members of the audience may communicate with the Adjudicator. The Adjudicator’s comment sheets may be obtained from the Official Recorder after the conclusion of each class.

Performers should present themselves at the Festival venue not less than 15 minutes before the time indicated in the Festival Programme, except at the beginning of each session when they should be present not less than 10 minutes before commencement. Please note that times given are only approximations.

In Choral Classes conductors may not sing with their choirs.

Silence must be maintained during the competitions and there will be no exit or entrance to the Halls during classes or adjudications.

Classes-Each class is referred to in the same way as in the Syllabus. All entrants (registered at the time of printing) are listed for each class progressing from the lower to the higher grades.

Entrants-Each entrant’s name is given along with the item for performance. Please inform us of any errors so that certificates can be printed correctly.

Trophies-Trophies will be awarded to performers gaining Commended or above. Trophies will be presented at the Festival Concert on Saturday 14 March at The Cinema, Newton Stewart, except for school classes. Trophies are listed alongside the main class name. Where more than one trophy is awarded for performers in a class, the relevant grades are listed with each trophy. Some trophies are competed for across a number of classes, hence the same trophy can appear against several classes. Some classes do not as yet have a trophy; please speak to any committee member if you would like to contribute a trophy for one or more of these classes. A list of class and trophy winners will be posted on the website at the end of the week.

nOPHOTOGrAPHYPLEASEWe want to make it clear that no photography, or sound/video recording, is permitted during the Festival. Photographs taken by the local press to accompany the results in the local papers will be taken only with permission of the winners, and/or parents/carers.

PLEASESwITCHOFFMOBILEPHOnES!As a courtesy to all performers we would ask you to ensure that you switch off all mobile phones and digital watches during competition sessions.

AlanMacLeandipMusEdrSAMd,FTCL,PGCEAfter graduating with distinction from The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Alan continued his studies with internationally renowned pianists, including Karl Schnabel. Principally a pianist, Alan also studied cello and singing, trained as a conductor, and for twenty years held the position of Head of Keyboard Studies at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College. For their first recording, English Music for Piano Duet, Alan and the pianist Peter Lawson received widespread critical acclaim and ‘Disc of the Year’ from the American music journal Fanfare. “I cannot recall ever hearing a piano duo with such perfect unanimity before. Peter Lawson and Alan MacLean appear to be in total sympathy not just with one another, but with all the music they play.” (International Record Review) Similar accolades followed on release of their second album, British Music for Piano Duet and, in 2017, a third album was released. Alan is much in demand as a chamber musician, having played with many of the country’s leading instrumentalists. In 2010 he and the violist Carol Hubel-Allen formed the Duo Karadys, the pair enjoying a concert schedule that includes the world premiere of David Earl’s Sonata for Viola and Piano at Cheltenham Music Festival. He tours extensively throughout the UK and overseas.
