Kirkcudbright Art & Crafts Trail 2011“If one lives in Galloway, one either fishes or paints” So writes Dorothy L Sayers in her Five Red Herrings, a Lord Peter Wimsey novel, set mainly in this area. You need not do either, or be a detective, to enjoy following this year’s Trail.
It has always been our aim to make the Trail a truly vibrant experience, covering all aspects of art and crafts. A platform for local people to display their many talents, all of which unfold as you follow the Trail.
You can explore the heritage of Kirkcudbright as you meander the streets and the closes, to see the work of present day artists and maybe find a secret place. Discover studios, homes, gardens and even sheds not normally open to the public but yours to venture into over the weekend.
You are invited to try your hand at various “have a go” venues, including creating a work of art for the weekend. Why not have a go at making your own kite, construct something with clay or watch a demonstration, such as the popular wood turning team. These are just a few ideas but you will find that much of the fun on the trail is derived from the surprises you discover!
Where to find
Participants pages 6-7Venues pages 8-9Trail Map pages 10-11
There are plenty of places to take refreshment and the photo-graphic opportunities are endless. Live music is played in many venues and for one evening there will be a choral performance.
All this makes for a unique event for Kirkcudbright to be enjoyed by all, whatever your interest, young or old. See the map for the route of our Free Trail Bus which will take you around the town.
So have a great weekend and we hope to see you again next year!

Three fine exhibitions amply reflecting the importance of Kirkcudbright’s art heritage will be on display over the Art and Crafts Trail weekend, and all three are free!
In Kirkcudbright Town Hall, the Kirkcudbright 2000 group are showing ‘The Glasgow Boys at Kirkcudbright’ curated by Roger Billcliffe – the leading expert on this subject. The exhibition follows the great success of ‘The Glasgow Boys’ exhibition in Glasgow and London last year. However this is a totally new selection of paintings by the ‘Boys’ borrowed from public and private collections.
Just across the road from the Town Hall, the Stewartry Museum has arranged a small exhibition entitled ‘Not only painters – Kirkcudbright’s craft workers, 1900-1975’ – featuring decorative and applied art work by Jessie M King, W M Johnston, Tim Jeffs and others.
Finally, not to be missed in the Tolbooth Art Centre is the exhibition ‘The Glasgow Style’ – a dazzling display of decorative art from a private collection, showing works produced by the ‘Glasgow Girls’ and their male counterparts in the period 1890
to 1930.

Vote of ThanksFrom small beginnings eight years ago our art and crafts trail keeps growing and has proved so popular that this year it has been extended to cover four days giving everyone who comes more time to cover the venues and enjoy all that the event has to offer.
Our thanks must be given to all those who take part and who help in any way to make the trail run smoothly, without them there would be no trail for us all to enjoy. Also our thanks, to you the public, for your support and encouragement.
Haste ye back in 2012
