DISEASE OUTBREAKS An event that occurs when a disease

spreads in greater numbers than expected.

The two types of disease outbreaks are epidemic and pandemic.

Page 4: 8.L.1.2: Understanding Disease Outbreaks

EPIDEMIC A disease that spreads in a certain region.

Lower number of people affected (than pandemic).

Smaller region affected (than pandemic). Ex: Malaria that spreads in a region in

Africa; Swine flu that spreads from Mexico to North America.

PANDEMIC An epidemic that affects the global

population. Higher number of people affected (than

epidemic). Larger region affected. (Usually global) Ex: Malaria - Africa → rest of the world;

Swine - Mexico → New Zealand, Israel, Scotland, and etc.

INFLUENZA PANDEMICS An influenza pandemic occurs when: A new

subtype of virus arises. New viruses may cause a pandemic due to:

Unprepared immune systems Easy transmission/spreading Affects different parts of the world at

different times. Rate of Infection: 6 to 9 months to spread

globally. (Even faster with air travel.)

EXAMPLES OF DISEASE OUTBREAKS The Spanish Influenza killed 40-50 million

people. (1918) The Asian Influenza killed 2 million people.

(1957) Hong Kong influenza killed 1 million

people. (1968)• Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) killed

800 people globally.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION Antibiotics – treat diseases caused by

bacteria. Vaccines – create immunity against

viruses. Good Hygiene – prevent spread of

germs and bacteria.
