NEW ORLEANS – The Crush’s defense scored nine points via aninterception return and a safety and held New Orleans scoreless on4 of their first eight possessions, allowing the Crush enough roomto overcome three turnovers and escape with a 47-44 victory in thequarterfinal round of the AFL playoffs at New Orleans Arena.

The defensive effort helped the Crush withstand a sluggish firsthalf from the usually potent offense, which turned the football overon two of its first three possessions and accounted for just 10 pointsbefore halftime. The offense awoke following intermission, scoringtouchdowns on four consecutive drives -- including three scoringpasses from John Dutton to Damian Harrell -- to grab a 17-point lead.

New Orleans trimmed the Crush’s lead to three points with twotouchdowns in the last 48 seconds, but an onside kick with six sec-onds left failed, allowing the Crush to drain the remaining time toclinch a win in their first-ever postseason game.

The VooDoo went 7-1 inside the New Orleans Arena in the reg-ular season, and roused the crowd of 14,369 several times during

the game, particularly late in the second quarter when they scored10 points in a 39-second span of the last minute before halftime totake a 16-14 lead. But the advantage was short-lived, as Duttoncompleted passes of 20 and 17 yards to Kevin McKenzie andHarrell, respectively, to set up a 19-yard field goal by AnthonyBrenner. The kick gave the Crush a 17-16 halftime lead, and theynever trailed after that.

Harrell led the Crush receiving corps by snagging 10 of Dutton’spasses for 134 yards. McKenzie added six grabs for 60 yards.Ahmad Hawkins led the defensive charge with nine unassistedtackles and scored on a 14-yard interception return 2:43 into thesecond quarter.

The victory puts the Crush in the AFL’s semifinals just one yearafter finishing their inaugural season with a 2-14 record. Coloradomoves on to face the No. 1 seed Arizona Rattlers at America WestArena in Phoenix. Colorado was the only lower seed to win in thefirst round.

PHOENIX -- The Crush rallied from a 17-point deficit to take a last-minute lead, but the team’s comeback fell short when Siaha Burleycaught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sherdrick Bonner with 17seconds remaining, allowing the Arizona Rattlers to defeat theCrush 45-41 in front of 13,151 at the America West Arena.

Colorado’s season ends one game shy of ArenaBowl XVIII witha 12-6 record. Arizona moves on to its third consecutive ArenaBowlwith a 13-5 mark.

The Crush had a chance to win the game on the final play, asthree consecutive passes from John Dutton to Kevin McKenzieallowed the team to advance from its 5-yard-line to the Rattlers’ 9-yard-line in just 13 seconds. But a final end-zone pass from Duttonflew out of play, sealing the team’s first-ever playoff defeat.

The loss nullified a stirring comeback necessitated when theteam fell behind 17-0 early in the second quarter. The Crush went

scoreless on its first three possessions while Arizona notched twotouchdowns and a field goal on its first three drives, allowing theRattlers to build a commanding edge.

Matters began to turn when Colorado defensive specialistRashad Floyd intercepted a pass in the end zone with 4:11 left in thefirst half. The Crush promptly drove 45 yards in seven plays for itsfirst touchdown of the game, then tacked on a field goal at the endof the first half after Floyd successfully recovered an on-side kick 51seconds before intermission.

The Crush opened the second half’s scoring with a 1-yard JohnPeaua TD run that tied the game at 17-apiece, beginning a run of 7consecutive TD drives for both teams. The Crush finally broke therun by stopping Arizona on downs with 5:28 remaining, but couldonly respond with a 26-yd field goal by Anthony Brenner, setting thestage for the last-minute Bonner-to-Burley score.

DENVER -- The Colorado Crush defense came up with a pair offourth-quarter stops -- including one with 42 seconds remaining --to preserve a 56-48 first-round Arena Football League playoff winover the San Jose SaberCats in front of 13,315 at Pepsi Center onSunday afternoon.

With the win, the Crush (11-6) advances to the AmericanConference championship game, where the team will face theChicago Rush, who defeated the Los Angeles Avengers in a concur-rent game Sunday afternoon. The SaberCats saw their bid for back-to-back ArenaBowl titles end with the loss; their season concludesat 9-8.

Colorado turned back three years of frustration in the win -- theteam’s first in five tries against the SaberCats. The SaberCats wonthe previous four meetings in the series by an average of 31 points, and had throttled Colorado 89-41 just 37 days earlier at Pepsi Center.

The Crush served notice early that the shellacking of Aprilwould not be repeated. Wide receiver/linebacker Kevin McKenzie

opened the contest with a 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Colorado’s defense subsequently notched the first of four stopsby holding San Jose to three yards on a 5-play opening drive. TheCrush then scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass from John Duttonto Andy McCullough to take a 14-0 lead just 4:55 into the game -- afar cry from the teams’ last meeting, when the SaberCats scored 35straight points en route to a 56-14 halftime lead.

Colorado would not trail until the 4:27 mark of the third quarter, when San Jose’s Barry Wagner scored on a 1-yard run to put theSaberCats in front 42-35. But that lead lasted just one minute and47 seconds, as the Crush responded by tying the score on a Duttonpass to Willis Marshall. San Jose would never lead again.

McCullough and Damian Harrell each broke the century mark inreceiving yardage with 122 and 102 yards through the air, respec-tively. Each scored twice. San Jose‘s Mark Grieb three for 392 yardsand six touchdowns in the loss.

DENVER -- Andy McCullough’s leaping, 22-yard touchdown grab indouble coverage 9:44 into overtime sent the Colorado Crush toArenaBowl XIX via a 49-43 win over the Chicago Rush.

McCullough’s score came after both the Crush and Rush hadgone scoreless on their opening overtime possessions, sending thealready memorable contest into sudden death. It marked the firsttime that an AFL semifinal game had ever gone to that point; onlytwo semifinals before had ever gone into overtime.

Colorado’s initial overtime chance had gone astray whenChicago’s Todd Howard intercepted a John Dutton pass in the endzone. Five plays later, Chicago’s Bob McMillen rambled around leftend for a 15-yard touchdown that could have ended the game, butan offsides penalty on the Rush nullified the score. Two plays later,Rush kicker Keith Gispert was wide right on a 36-yard field-goalattempt, sending the contest into sudden death and setting thestage for McCullough’s heroics.

The events in the final moments of regulation that set up theovertime bordered on the bizarre. The Crush thought it had the gamewon when Rashad Floyd intercepted a pass on the last play of reg-ulation. But a flag flew, signaling pass interference against Floydthat nullified the play.

As the flag sailed to the turf, so too did a blizzard of confetti, asthe worker responsible was not aware of the flag amidst the cele-

bratory ruckus among the 13,719 on hand at Pepsi Center. The gamepaused as Rush players brushed the confetti aside as if it was snowto give Gispert space with which to attempt a 17-yard field goal, which he nailed to force overtime.

Even without the rare sudden-death overtime and the prematuredispensing of celebratory paper, the game was one of the mostmemorable in Arena Football history. Colorado sprinted to a 20-0second-quarter lead and had possession of the football with achance to push the lead to four scores midway through the period, but John Moyer sacked Dutton, forcing a fumble that Rush widereceiver/linebacker Etu Molden recovered. Two plays later, the Rushscored its first touchdown of the game, and its rally was under way.

Colorado managed to work its lead back to 20 points in the finalseconds of the half, but Chicago narrowed the Crush edge to 33-20at intermission after Philyaw found Molden for a 26-yard, “HailMary” completion off the right rebound net as time expired beforehalftime. The score sent the Rush on a 27-3 run that eventually gavethem a 40-36 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

McCullough made a leaping, 8-yard reception in the back of theend zone to put the Crush back in front 43-40 with 2:52 remaining.

Chicago got possession once again and drove to the brink of theend zone before the wild confluence of circumstances at the end ofregulation.

LAS VEGAS -- Clay Rush drilled a 20-yard field goal as time expiredto give the Colorado Crush a 51-48 ArenaBowl XIX win over theGeorgia Force at the Thomas & Mack Center on Sunday afternoon, giving the Crush its first-ever Arena Football League championshipin just its third year of existence.

Rush’s connection gave the Crush its final lead of a game inwhich the team never trailed, building an 11-point lead in the sec-ond and third quarters before withstanding a rally in which theForce forged three tie scores in the final period -- at 34-, 41- and 48-apiece. The final deadlock came with 18 seconds remaining afterMatt Nagy found Chris Jackson for a 20-yard score, but it left justenough time for the Crush to strike back.

Colorado got the ball back with 18 seconds left at its 5-yard-line, and quarterback John Dutton capitalized on man-to-man cov-erage to find wide receiver/linebacker Kevin McKenzie for a 37-yardreception that moved the Crush to the Georgia 8-yard-line. An ille-gal-hands-to-the-face infraction against Georgia moved Colorado tothe Georgia 4, setting up Rush’s final-play kick.

The last-minute heroics wouldn’t have been possible without athird consecutive strong start by the Crush. The Crush bolted to a 10-0 lead over Georgia after a touchdown run and a 20-yard field goal that

was set up by an Ahmad Hawkins interception on the Force’s first playfrom scrimmage.

Colorado’s defense kept the Force in check early, recording stopson two of Georgia’s first three drives. The Crush opened the secondhalf with another defensive stand when Rashad Floyd swatted awaya fourth-down pass at the goal line 5:33 into the third quarter.

In a rare reversal of Arena Football form, it was the groundattacks that dominated throughout the first half, as all six of thetouchdowns in the game’s first 30 minutes came on runs.

Colorado’s Willis Marshall ran for three scores in the first half, the most for one player in an ArenaBowl since Detroit’s Art Schlichterran for four touchdowns in ArenaBowl IV. He also snared six passesfor 111 yards and a score, and added four total tackles as he tookaway Ironman of the Game and Offensive Player of the Game honors.

Colorado’s win was also a milestone for co-owners Pat Bowlenand Stan Kroenke, as each pulled off an NFL-AFL double for theircareers. The Denver Broncos have won two Super Bowls underBowlen’s stewardship, while Kroenke is a minority owner of the St.Louis Rams, who won Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000. CrushCEO and co-owner John Elway also won his first ArenaBowl afterearning a pair of Super Bowls as a Broncos player.

DENVER -- Four turnovers -- including an interception returned 45yards for a touchdown -- proved fatal for the Colorado Crush as itsbid to become the Arena Football League’s first back-to-back cham-pions since the 1995-96 Tampa Bay Storm ended in a 63-46 loss tothe Chicago Rush at Pepsi Center on Sunday afternoon.

The loss was the Crush’s first-ever home postseason defeat, and ends its season at 11-6.

Chicago led the game start to finish, consuming exactly half ofthe first quarter on its game-opening touchdown drive and thenpushing the edge to 13 points after Dennison Robinson returned aninterception 45 yards for a score with 4:12 left in the first quarter. However, the Crush scratched back to within two points before thegame turned against the defending champions for good, whenChicago scored 17 points in the last 3:28 of the first half to turn atwo-point lead into a 33-14 halftime advantage.

Colorado had possession at its 5-yard-line after Rashad Floydmade an end-zone interception on a pass tipped by Delvin Hughley

to snuff out a Chicago drive. However, Dutton fumbled a snap twoplays later, giving the ball back to Chicago and setting up a DeJuanAlfonzo touchdown that put the Rush up 23-14.

The ensuing kickoff bounced off the iron at the bottom of theright rebound net and beyond the grasp of Willis Marshall, allowingJeremy Unertl to recover the football at the goal line to increaseChicago's lead to 16 points. Chicago stopped the Crush at the 1-yard-line on the game's next drive, and Dan Frantz kicked a 26-yardfield goal as time expired.

Colorado would narrow the deficit to single digits twice in thesecnd half, pulling within 36-27 in the third quarter and 49-40 in thefourth. However, miscures continued to hinder the Crush, as twomissed extra points and another fumbled center-snap exchange wasreturned 20 yards for a third-quarter touchdown by Chicago'sDeJuan Alfonzo.
