89th Annual Report 2015Hon’ble Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley, Chairman of Governing Body Shri Ajay S. Shriram, distinguished members of the Governing Body, eminent alumni, guests, proud parents, my dear colleagues, staff & students, ladies and gentlemen.

A very good morning to all of you, and A warm welcome to the SRCC 89th Annual Day function

Shri Ram College of Commerce, established in 1926 by Sir Shri Ram, a philanthropist and business leader, is a premier institution of higher education in India. It has achieved immense prestige in the field of Commerce and Economics education since its inception. The college, besides academics, lays great emphasis on co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. It gives me immense pleasure and we feel elated to inform you that our students have achieved outstanding positions in academics, sports, co-curricular and extra-curricular events this year. On the 89th Annual Day of the College, it is the time to recognize and applaud the excellence of our young achievers and also share with you our aim and mission. We aim that by 2026, the centenary year of Shri Ram College of Commerce, the college is recognized not only as one of the best institution of higher education in India but also globally. Our mission is to provide technology based inclusive and integrated (a judicious mix of physical, intellectual & value) education in a global context in a safe, vibrant & hygienic environment and achieve excellence in publications and research to enrich not only national but also international community.

The Chief Guest of today’s function, a very dynamic & vibrant person, Hon’ble Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley needs no introduction. Not only is he a member of the Governing Body of SRCC, he is also an illustrious alumnus and chief patron of the Alumni Association of the College. It is my pleasure & privilege and a great honour for all of us to welcome him as Chief Guest on 89th Annual Day of his own college. Sir, thank you very much for being here and making our day so memorable. Another eminent personality sharing the dais is the president of CII and the chairman of our Governing Body, Shri Ajay S. Shriram, the – great grandson of our founder Sir Shri Ram. He is a person known for his pragmatic approach and clear vision. Sir, we are honoured by your gracious presence. Both, Shri Arun Jaitley and Shri Ajay S. Shriram, have pushed forward the process of change in the college that is forward-looking and in line with the changing needs of the nation. Their strategies, commitment, enthusiasm and passion for the college have guided us in the academic and infrastructural development of the college. As a result, we have state of the art classrooms, Equal Opportunity Cell, sports complex, updated communication network, internet connectivity, etc. for all stakeholders in line with the futuristic notion of education.

The strength of SRCC is the input of the system, i.e. the students. This input passes through various processes designed and implemented by the dedicated faculty members and non-teaching staff. Because of the quality of input and various systems put in place, the output of the system is bound to be excellent, which is reflected in the performance of the students. Our students have performed very well over the years and this year is no exception. My heartiest congratulations to all the winners of academics, sports, co-curricular and extra-curricular events of the current academic session. A piece of advice for winners: to become more humble, considerate and compassionate by taking your success to your heart. Take your success to you heart and not to your mind to ensure that your ego is not nurtured. And the non-winners: ‘DO NOT QUIT’. Don’t take it to your heart, but to your mind. Analyze it, rework your strategies and work harder, so that you become the winner next time. I feel that the only failure in life is not to learn from your failures.

2 Shri Ram College of Commerce

Today, we will honor winners of various events with the medals and academic prizes. But one particular event deserves a special mention here. It is one of a kind of event that has never taken place in the history of the college. Our B.Com. (H), second year section-I student, Mrityunjay Sharma has broken the existing Limca Book of Records of 50 hours and 40 minutes of playing Keyboard by playing (Longest Piano Recital) for 52 hours from March 11, 2015 to March 13, 2015.

The Alumni of any institution are their brand ambassadors. Their success in their respective fields adds immensely to their alma mater’s brand. Every year awards are given to honour the distinguished alumni of the college by following a transparent system adopted by the selection committee headed by the Hon’ble Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Arjun K. Sikri, my illustrious batchmate, an eminent alumnus of the college and the member of the Governing Body of the college.

I am an alumnus of this college and therefore, really concerned about the issue of alumni – college disconnect. The need of the hour is alumni – activation in real terms. Many surface level activities, in particular fund-raising activities, have been undertaken over the past years after Dr. Girish Ahuja took over as president & Shri Arun Jaitley as the chief patron of the alumni association. But there is a need to engage alumni in a substantial way to take college forward by undertaking purposeful activities. Much more is desired in this direction for meaningful and purposeful engagement of the alumni. The contribution of Shri Arun Jaitley, Dr. Girish Ahuja and his team in making the association a vibrant one is known to the alumni of the college. But we periodically need to refresh or reinvent ourselves to stay vibrant. I believe that emotional connectedness and the sense of belongingness of alumni is lying in a dormant state and needs to be activated by engaging them more & more. It is the responsibility of the institution to take this initiative. For this, we should encourage greater participation of alumni in steering the college ahead by requesting for endowment, to hold visiting positions, helping in curriculum development & delivery, mentoring students, etc. Other desired steps are: open alumni office, issue quarterly e-newsletter, start week-end monthly alumni evenings, allow use of infra-structure at concessional rates, arrange a cricket match between GB XI and Alumni XI, nominate one GB member from alumni, open global chapters, etc.

To provide holistic education, several significant initiatives were undertaken and a few are in the pipeline. Some of these are as under:

• Empower the Marginalized Segments: Outreach programmes for lessprivileged: remedial classes, Hindi classes for North-East students, a research project on North-East culture, financial aid, all round support for piano event mentioned earlier, etc.

• Environmental Initiative: Waste paper recycling in partnership withGreenobin Recycling Private Limited, UNDP Seminar on Environment, Khadi Utsav.

• Cleanliness &Hygiene: Canteen,Washroom fittings etc. by renownedproviders.

• ForSRCC’sDaughters:SelfDefenseWorkshop, viewcuttersontheboundarywall of girls’ hostel, UNDP programme on women empowerment.

• SocialImpactProgramme:

– The NSS unit of the college rendered highly committed service to enrich the corporate life of the college and also make a positive change in the quality of life of the community around.

Page 5: 89th Annual Report 2015

2 3Annual Report 2014-15

– To promote social entrepreneurship, Enactus empowered thousands of people through their projects and done a puppet show in Nagaland about Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan organized by the Government of India.

• Physical Fitness: Basic Health Care Unit, Physiotherapy,Workshop on“Wellness for All”, International Sports Exchange Programme.

• IntellectualProgrammes: – Workshop on E-Resource – Role in Research & Teaching (March 16-

22, 2015). – Workshop on Case Method Teaching (November 11-22, 2014). – Seminar and oratory competition on Good Governance Day – International Conferences. – International Exchange Programmes.

Some of the initiatives in the process are: – Teach in India: The catchphrase of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri

Narendra Modi. We are in the process of taking up engagement of globally known intellectuals and international faculty for our students and faculty under “GIAN” (Global Initiative of Academic Networks), the initiative of our Hon’ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani.

– Startups: We have been doing extremely well as far as placements are concerned but as things are changing, the emphasis should shift from job seekers to job providers. For this, we need to establish a center for innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship. We are in the process of making it happen soon.

– Research Promotion: Collaboration with best minds for strengthening research and entrepreneurship capabilities.

– Seminar on Role of Banking in Global Era (April 6-7, 2015). – New Computer Laboratory. – New Girls' Hostel block. – A regular cultrural programme of North-East students.

Friends, we encourage purposeful activities as mentioned above, for holistic development of students to ensure that we produce not only earners but also good human beings. To quote Aristotle “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all”. To grow in stature as human beings, we train students to embrace life in all its fullness, which is not measured only by IQ or even EQ, but a spiritual way of life to ensure that they move towards the main purpose of life, i.e. sustainable happiness.

I express my gratitude to all guests for their valued presence, thanks to the college faculty and staff for their unflinching support and extend my good wishes to students for their future endeavours.

Thank you very much.

Dr. Ashok Sehgal March 27, 2015

BUSINESS CONCLAVE

Sometimes what matters is neither the beginning nor the end but the journey. SRCC Business Conclave’15 was indeed a journey worth remembering. Living up to the expectations, the Students’ Union of the college did a commendable job in organizing the event.

The students witnessed three days of high-profile events during February 11-13, 2015, including speaker sessions by eminent personalities and an ensemble of business competitions which proved to be a platform for conception and barter of ideas amongst the brightest minds of the country.

The esteemed guests who enlightened the audience with their meaningful and motivational speeches were Dr. Pawan G. Agarwal (CEO, Mumbai Dabbawalas); Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad (Minister of Communications and Information Technology); Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani (Union Minister for Human Resource Development); Shri Ram Jethmalani (Eminent Lawyer) and Shri Prithvi Raj Chavan (former Chief Minister of Maharashtra). A panel discussion among Shri Digvijay Singh, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi and Shri Anand Kumar from Congress, BJP and AAP respectively added spice to the three-day event.

The interactive session by Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani turned out to be a huge success. It witnessed an active participation from a large number of students from Delhi University as the minister preferred to entertain questions from audience to making a formal speech. The HRD minister

promptly answered all the questions raised by students, enlightening them about numerous policies being pursued by her ministry. She encouraged the students to give their valuable feedback on the new education policy.

The powerful speeches of these influential thinkers and industry-leaders, with their immense expertise and dedication in their respective fields, inspired young minds to reflect on possibilities beyond all the perceived barriers.

The various events which witnessed enthusiastic

participation were Maestro: The Best Manager, Shri Ram Case Competition, Chasing Margins, Anthropos Kapital: HR, Marketmania, Trading Times, Launchpad and the like. Students from schools and colleges from all over the country showcased their talents.

CROSSROADS’15

ENACTUS

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Abhay kumar

President: Mihika Sharma

Co- President: Prateek Manudhanya

Projects undertaken by Enactus during the academic session 2014-15:

kayakalp : Pulling the Strings of Change

Project ‘Kayakalp’ aims to empower the traditional puppeteers and other artists of Kathputli colony and Shadipur Depot in order to augment their income generation possibilities, while also using the medium of puppetry to convey social and environmental messages. Puppetry, in India has seen a downward gradient from being an art which lit up the Indian streets and courtrooms, to being pushed to hopeless anonymity reduced by the contemporary forms of entertainment. This project is an initiative to revive the dying art form.

Page 29: 89th Annual Report 2015

26 27Annual Report 2014-15

The society has successfully performed shows for various corporations as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Our shows have also been telecasted on Doordarshan as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Puppetry as a medium to spread voter awareness has also been recognized by the Election Commission and many shows on the theme of voter awareness and informed choice were performed in different constituencies in Delhi before the state elections.

In December, the artists from Project Kayakalp conducted a puppetry workshop at the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, New Delhi for 120 teachers from 19 states. The workshop took puppetry beyond the confines of being a mode of entertainment and propagated its use as an effective mode of education and spreading awareness.

The puppeteers were also made to attend third party meetings to give them a practical exposure of conversing with people and convincing them. The puppeteers are also being taught the art of script writing. Personality Development sessions are conducted which aim at improving the puppeteers’ communication, language and presentation skills. Training under the Teach India Programme of Times of India has enabled our puppeteers to speak English confidently and fluently.

Azmat : Repossessing Respect

Project ‘Azmat’ is an endeavour to liberate manual scavengers by providing them with a sustainable source of livelihood through development of a micro-enterprise of detergent making and to facilitate the construction of proper toilet systems. The new employment opportunity has increased the overall income of the women, thereby empowering them and making them financially self-reliant.

For construction of the toilets, raw materials were procured locally and villagers were employed for this task as this helped in boosting up the rural economy. Open defecation is no more an issue amongst the villagers and they are sensitive towards issues of cleanliness and sanitation. The two pit toilet system conserves water and converts human waste into nutrient rich manure, which creates a positive environmental impact and also promotes the agrarian economy of the village.

After the success achieved by the women in manufacturing ‘Neki’ detergent powder, they have now diversified into Phenyl manufacturing and have been conducting demand assessments for the same. Through regular visits, the society has been able to identify many interested third-parties who have been provided with samples, and have also started servicing orders for hospitals and housekeeping agencies in Noida. For skill development of the women, assessment of their existing level of skills was done and based on that data, the society devised a new teaching module for them and is also looking at various capacity building organisations to assist itself in implementing the modules efficiently.

Research

It is actively looking into starting a new project this academic year and has made considerable inroads into the same. A new project starts with the identification of a community in need, and the subsequent development of a business model to address that need. The society has conducted numerous field visits over the past few months in order to identify such communities and is into consultation with many organisations and NGO’s to gain hands-on experience regarding the projects.

Enactus Raahgiri

On November 2, 2014, it organised a marathon at Raahgiri Day, Connaught Place, in which Enactus teams from all across Delhi and other regions came together to celebrate the spirit of social entrepreneurship. Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliament, flagged off the marathon. The puppeteers from Project Kayakalp performed a show on the theme of Road Safety. The show was so widely appreciated that the puppeteers were further invited to perform on the same theme at Raahgiri, Gurgaon.
