Editor: I was interviewed by the Arizona Republic about three weeks ago. I stand behind

what I said, and I will again add my continued support of Chief Arnson. Pinal County is very fortunate to have a true

Christian leader, family man and professional law man as a candidate for Sheriff. I am a U.S. Navy veteran of

Letter to the Editor: Continued support for Arnson for Sheriffthe Korean War. I served as a sworn deputy in the 1960s for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. I have been the Chief Judge of the Gila River Indian Community Tribal Court for more than 20 years. Most recently, I was the governor of my community for many years. In April, 2010, I hired Chief Derek Arnson. He was the first non-native to serve my community as Chief of Police. Chief Arnson put together a five year strategic plan which afforded our community with a more effective and efficient manner of providing public safety. He is a man of great compassion and was instrumental in helping our community receive millions in federal grants; most notably, the building of a woman’s shelter for victims of abuse. Chief Arnson restored honor and professionalism to a police department which was rampant with abuse of power and authority. He held his officers accountable! In fact, several of these officers were terminated and placed on the Maricopa County Attorney’s “Brady List” for dishonesty and other reasons. One of those officers, a female, punched a prisoner in the base of the skull was he

was handcuffed to the rear, all because she was mad at him. This assault was captured on video and was sent to the ACLU, FBI and other outlets, including AZ POST. The officer still has her AZPOST certification and is attending a local Phoenix law school. Prior to Chief Arnson’s arrival, this was accepted as “status quo” behavior. Around September 2010, Chief Arnson informed me that my chief of staff and, now, governor of the community, Greg Mendoza, had come to him requesting that he (Arnson) hire his (Mendoza’s) college friend as a new police commander. This individual is and was a Gila River community member. Chief Arnson informed me that Mendoza has asked him, some three or four times, if he would hire his friend. I informed Chief Arnson that he was to have no more contact with Mendoza and that I would take care of keeping Mendoza from interfering with police business. I removed Mendoza as my chief of staff due to his interfering, not only with Chief Arnson, but with other department directors. Mendoza was later elected to the tribal council. He quickly ran and

won the governorship. On October 31, 2011, I received a very disturbing phone call from Chief Arnson, informing me that he had just received a phone call from Mendoza which was rude and unprofessional. Chief Arnson stated that Mendoza said to him, “I heard from a reliable source that you are not supporting me for governor because of my lifestyle?” Chief Arnson said that he informed Mendoza that he was very offended by his comment and that his sources are wrong, and that he is not supporting any candidate because he is not a voter in the community. He then went on to explain that he was not for sale and could not be bought and to tell Mendoza that any honorable chief of police will not be swayed by politics, but, rather, serve the people, not an agenda. This recent press release from my community is unwarranted and has harmed Chief Arnson. Currently, Mendoza is not making good decisions as governor. The current sheriff, Babeu, and Mendoza are personal friends. It is unfortunate that Mendoza would stoop to the promptings of Babeu and shed such untruths upon Chief Arnson’s character. My community has now suffered, too, because of this false information. The Gila River Indian Community has never in the past released information of any kind, with reference to any employee or their employment status to the public. It goes against our sovereignty. Hindag, as passed down by our elders across hundreds of years, teaches us respect for all things, including the value of a promise, abiding by the law and concern for the welfare of others. This is a very sad game of politics, at the expense of a good man: Chief Arnson. Chief Arnson received excellent evaluations each year, and was an asset to our community; as he will be to our county. He has my vote! /s/ William R. RhodesFormer Governor, Gila River Indian Community

Editor: As you read this, your early primary ballot is on the way to your mailbox. I want to talk directly to the registered Republicans. Four years ago you created the problem of Paul Babeu, and now you are the only ones who can fix it. We don’t often get the opportunity for “do-overs”, so please don’t waste this one! Four years ago Pinal County elected a sheriff with no experience and a proven history of lying. Since then, there has been an avalanche of scandals, on-going investigations, and embarrassing national publicity for our county and state. Besides the sheriff

himself, his deputies, administrative employees, political friends and family have all become tainted. We watched him reward political allies and punish political enemies. He hired disgraced Chandler cops, destroyed the financial health of the PCSO (and is presently lying about it), and attacked anyone who disagreed with him. A federal program to distribute surplus equipment around the country had to be suspended because this sheriff decided to run a political and financial scam. He destroyed a working relationship with a nationally-honored volunteer mountain rescue group because it wasn’t under his political

control. He has deliberately lied about the level of crime on the border (which our county is nowhere near), the level of illegal immigration (lowest in years) and the level of border security (higher than ever before). All the while, he was campaigning for Congress, which was his ultimate goal, possibly using public, taxpayer resources (another ongoing investigation). When that fell apart with the revelation of his online sexual escapades, he was forced to “settle” for the office of sheriff. And in order to make sure he has no interference, he has hand-picked a “team” of office holders that he can

count on to do his bidding - supervisors, county attorney, even the Recorder, which is an absolutely non-political office - that he intends to shove down our throats. Having four Republican candidates on the primary ballot will potentially split the vote, and Babeu could win. I’m hoping that won’t happen, but it’s not in my hands. Republicans, you have to fix this mess, hopefully with the help of Independents who choose a Republican ballot. If you’re still not sure, ask your kids, or your neighbors’ kids. I’d be willing to bet there’s not a child in this county over the age of

Letter to the Editor: Republican problem demands Republican solutionten who hasn’t seen, and snickered at, the pictures of Babeu online. That alone – which was enough to knock

him out of the Congressional race – should disqualify him as our sheriff./s/ Mary Desio

Editor: Our community has always been a tight family. We can’t be easily fooled. I’m taking this time to ask everyone to join us and get out and vote in the primary. This is the most important election in the history of Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

You may hear Paul Babeu making excuses about his decisions. Well we are tired of his excuses. I have watched his debates myself. We need a commander who knows what’s going on in each department. He uses the media to accuse candidates of wrong

doing. We are a lot smarter than he gives us credit for. I know from my own experiences since Babeu went after our own family. We are supporting Glenn Millsaps Jr. to be our next Pinal County Sheriff./s/ Peter & Jennie Sanchez

Alexis Mills’ duties this year will include teaching English, drama and journalism including newspaper and yearbook. She is self a proclaimed Air Force brat who moved a lot. She attended the University of Arizona where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English, and a master’s degree in journalism. She also holds a certificate in field archaeology from Pima College. She started

teaching at Nogales High School and also taught at Rio Rico High School, Alchesay in Whiteriver, Benson Middle School and Hasam Prep and Leadership School. She chose teaching as a career because she loves

helping students succeed in school and life. Her career goals include teaching for another 10 years; continue to work as a freelance editor, and to pursue photography and creative writing.

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden High School volleyball coaches, Head Coach Marissa Gallego and her assistant and J,V. coach Salvador Gallego, welcomed fifteen Lady Lobos to the start of conditioning drills in preparation for the upcoming volleyball season.

The Lady Lobo volleyball team will have senior leadership from five returning Lady Lobo volleyball players. The five seniors that will be looked upon for the lead will be Marlisse Perez, Lexi Felix, Danielle Patton, Lainey Lopez and Merlinda Marinez. A senior that will be missed by the team,

Los Lobos getting ready for the coming seasonMelissa Islava, could not get a medical clearance to participate in her senior year of Lady Lobo volleyball. These Lady Lobo student-athletes will be of much help to the underclass players as thy prepare for the rigors of the coming season, a season that again will have them playing against teams from bigger schools because of the A.I.A. scheduling. As a matter of fact, the Lady Lobos will only tangle with two teams from their own section, Ray High and Ft. Thomas High School. The Lady Lobos will have two and a half weeks to get ready to hit volleyballs

to a team other than their own teammates. The Lady Lobos are scheduled for a scrimmage against the always tough Lady Miners of San Manuel High School at San Manuel on Thursday, August 23. The Lady Lobos will have a couple of more practices before taking on the Lady Bearcats of Ray High School in the first regular match of the season. It will be a season of learning with so many young players on the squad but it should also be an exciting season if the senior members can carry the young team. On the football field,

the Lobo football team completed the first week of two-a-day conditioning drills on Friday. The Lobo team with tired legs went through a tough final workout on Friday night with a lot of wind sprints but they were still in high spirits despite the huffing and puffing. The great practices that they had earned them a big reward, a hamburger cookout after their final drills. The hamburger cookout was put together by family members and the coaches. Tired and all, the football players put down quite a bit of hamburgers. The pads will be going

on this coming week and the competition for starting positions will heat up. Despite the high number of returning senior players, every player on the team will be given an opportunity to win a starting position. The tough competition on the practice field should get the Lobos ready for the start of the season, a season that starts with a three team scrimmage scheduled to be played on the St. David High School field on Thursday, August 16, with a 5 p.m. start. The three teams competing will be Hayden, St. David and Pima High Schools.

By Joe PalmerPastor, Fellowship Baptist Church Most who will read this article will agree with me that we have a Maker. God exists. According to Newsweek, (Sept. 11, 2006, p.47) “… Americans said they believed in God by a margin of 92 to 6 – only 2 percent answered ‘don’t know’ – and only 37 percent said they’d be willing to vote

for an atheist for president.” Most atheists believe that God does not exist because of the suffering caused by evil in our world. The theory of evolution and skeptical philosophers like Hume and Kant are not the reason for doubting God; suffering is the main reason for doubt. The Bible insists that, “The LORD is righteous in all His ways, and kind in all His deeds.” (Psalm 145:17) It

Pastor’s Corner – God is, and He is Good states emphatically, “God is love.” (1 John 4:8,16) How can this be when, with the rest of mankind and creation, we suffer so much pain and death? The answers are simpler than you might expect, though they would require too much background material for this short little article. So let me give you the short answer, and on another occasion I’ll try to say more. The short answer for how I know God is good (even

though we suffer) is – Jesus. God became a man and suffered with us and for us. He died to pay for our sin. He satisfied justice by being executed for our sin. “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) If God loves like this, then He is good! If you would like to talk with me (Pastor Joe Palmer of Fellowship Baptist) about it, e-mail me at [email protected].

Glen Millsaps, who resides in Coolidge, is a Democratic candidate for Sheriff. Millsaps touts his experience as a Marine, a disabled veteran and a former employee for the United States Department of Justice. He holds several degrees including a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice with emphasis in Law Enforcement and a master’s in Business Administration, specializing in Management. He describes his leadership style as situational, “the kind used in Marine Corps,” he explained. Millsaps has constructed a 16-point plan for addressing the PCSO budget, which has faced scrutiny in the last few months. “We have the ability to implement a zero-based budget analysis,” he said. “We need to uproot everything and take a look at every expenditure there is.” Aspects of his plan involve turning

Adam Perlman is the new manager of the Ray Federal Credit Union. (John Hernandez photo)

By John Hernandez Adam Perlman’s career in credit unions spans 15 years. He started as a volunteer on a credit committee and then went on to manage two credit unions in New York City. While working for the CPA firm of Clifton Gunderson he audited credit unions all over the country. He worked as an independent consultant and prior to coming to Ray Federal credit Union, he was the manager of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs for the Credit Union association of New Mexico. Adam has been in Arizona for two months.

He started at Ray Federal Credit Union on July 2. He was still working as the interim CEO of Chino Federal Credit Union in Silver City, New Mexico and traveling back and forth between the two jobs. “I am very excited about the direction the credit union is heading and we have some new programs we will be implementing,” Perlman said. “We have pre-approved auto loans and are working on direct lending with auto dealers.” Perlman says he “loves credit unions.” “Our money comes here and stays in the community,” he said.

Tom Bearup, who resides in San Tan Valley, is a Republican candidate for Sheriff. In terms of law enforcement experience, he has worked for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department and the Alaska Police Department. Bearup said he not only has the life experience required for Sheriff but

also that his business background as the CEO of his own ministry would inform his management of the budget. “I would keep my finger on that pulse much closer,” he said. “If it is not necessary, we’re going to change that direction.” Bearup said utilizing community resources, like retired law enforcement officers that want to volunteer, would be critical

in reducing costs. “If we can capitalize on them, with no cost to the taxpayer, I want to do that,” he said.

Regarding drug and human smuggling patrols, Bearup said air patrols of the Vekol Valley could be supplemented by coordinating air posses. “I don’t have to have deputies there 24/7, I don’t have to take them away from patrol,” he said.

Working together with

other law enforcement agencies will also be critical to avoid duplicate services and address issues on the border, Bearup argued. He said defending citizens from criminal activity is the first goal of law enforcement, no matter who gets the credit. “How can we protect our citizens? That’s our number one goal, not publicity,” he said. Ultimately, Bearup said

he would bring in a new era at PCSO. “I have the

ability to restore some confidence and integrity to the Sheriff’s office,” he enthused. For more information, visit TomBearup.com.
