    SECTION E

    V. a) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :

    Criticism is the overall term for studies concerned with defining, classifying,

    analysing, interpreting and evaluating works of literature. There are several

    types of criticism. Among them the most important are : Theoretical criticism;

    practical criticism and impressionistic criticism. Theoretical criticism is about

    theory of literature, in the sense of general principles. Practical criticismconcerns itself with the discussion of particular works and writers.

    Impressionistic criticism attempts to focus on the felt qualities of a particular

    passage or work. Some of the well-known-critical books on these three types

    of criticism respectively are I.A. Richards Principles of Literary Criticism,

    Dr. Johnsons Lives of the English Poets and Walter Paters Studies in the

    History of The Renaissance. Yet, criticism in literature is not restricted to

    only these types. It should be directed to the study of any literary work

    comprehensively from historical or sociological point of view too. Aboveall, criticism should be objective and prejudice free.
