TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The glory of the Lord shows through Israel, a light to all nations, that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6). Psalm — Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Second Reading — All those who call upon the name of the Lord are called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:1-3). Gospel — John the Baptist testifies: The one who comes after me, on whom the Spirit comes down and remains, is the Son of God (John 1:29-34).The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time As a Church, we now move into Ordinary Time. “Ordinary” comes from the Latin root for “order,” which is why we line the Sundays up on the calendar and count them—with “ordinal” num-bers—one by one. The orderly way we proceed through the liturgical year reminds us that our faith offers a strategic goal for our lives: eternal happiness with God, who is love. Today’s readings share stories of believers who order their daily activities toward the goal of sharing God’s love. Isaiah em-braces his role as God’s servant and works to bring glory not only to Israel, but to the entire world. In a similar way, Saint Paul identifies himself as Christ’s witness in the world and reminds the Corinthi-ans of their life goal: “to be holy.” The Gospel shows us John the Baptist, servant and witness, atten-tive to God’s loving orders, the divine plan for salvation. TOO LITTLE Today’s first reading reveals the Lord’s super-sized heart. “It is too little,” according to God, to protect and guide only the tribes of Jacob. The enormity of God’s love cannot limit itself to one na-tion; divine love overflows, spilling liberally over all people everywhere. Isaiah, prophet of the long-suffering Israelites, might have been surprised to hear that the salvation of his people is not enough for God. But God always wants more than what we want. God’s passion outstrips all of our deepest desires. We are merely creatures. Compared to the hugeness of our Creator’s designs, we will always want too little, have too little, know too little, love too little. This littleness frustrates us throughout life. But exactly when we admit our littleness, we make room for Christ. NEVER TOO LATE John the Baptist models for us the grace of littleness. Twice in today’s Gospel reading, John admits, “I did not know.” Even though John has ordered his entire life toward the goal of preparing the world for the Messiah, he does not, on his own, recognize Christ when he sees him. The Gospel insists John “did not know” Jesus; in his humility, John relies entirely on God for direction. John waits and waits—baptizing, praying, preaching—until, finally, the Holy Spirit reveals the Messiah. John had waited his whole life for this confirmation from the Spirit. God’s chosen people, the Israelites, had waited much, much longer. Surely many wondered if God would ever send the Messiah as promised. But God is never late. In our littleness, we cannot see the arc of all human history with God’s clarity and love. Each of us aches deeply for some good thing: a cure, a resolution, a rest, a fair break. When we are made to wait for what seems ob-viously beneficial, we sometimes wonder if God is really as all-powerful and all-loving as people say. Today’s readings invite us to trust. Today’s Readings: Is 49:3, 5–6; Ps 40:2, 4, 7–8, 8–9, 10; 1 Cor 1:1–3; Jn 1:29–34 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Certain dates may not be available. Suggested donations per Mass is $10. Please note that the Sanctuary Lamp & Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly. The suggest-ed donation is $20 for the Sanctuary Lamp and $50 for the Bread and Wine. There are only three Sanctu-ary Lamp Memorials remaining for 2020. We do have a number of Bread & Wine Memorials still availa-ble.

All Mass or remembrance requests can be made in person, at the rectory or by completing the Mass re-quest envelope that can be found in the Narthex. Please contact the Rectory for availability. Please in-sert your payment in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket or the mail slot at the Rectory. COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin Ameri-ca and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, diffi-cult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all pre-sent obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To hear more about how your gifts make a difference, visit www.org/latin-america. Envelopes can be found in the narthex.

In addition, they continue to provide the homebound with the connection to the Par-ish by sharing a Bulletin and discussing upcoming events.

Pro-Lifer's from O.L.M.C. and St. Eugene's gather at Daly Plaza to join the 6,000 person march that took place on January 11 in support of the sanctity of human life

There were many excellent speak-ers at the big rally which took place before the march. Among them were: Cardinal Blase Cupich, Con-gressman Dan Lipinski, and a col-lege student from "Students for Life" who said: "you don't have to kill your daughter to have a successful ca-reer."

Please contact the rectory at 773-625-3369, if you are interested. We look forward to hearing from you.
