A FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL COVER FROM THE THIRD “MARTINSYDE”ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC. ONLY 25 COVERS WERE ADDED TO THE MAIL FOR THEJULY 17 FLIGHT, WHICH CRASHED ON TAKE-OFF. ..........................................................................

The “Martinsyde” was rebuilt after the May 1919 crash. Major Raynham and his new naviga-tor, Lieut. Biddlescombe, made another attempt on July 17, but the plane crashed duringtake-off. The mail bag, which contained 25 additional letters franked with the $1.00 Alcock-Brown stamp, was taken to England by Major Raynham but forgotten until the followingJanuary, which explains the Jan. 7 backstamp applied by the London post office. ....................
