The Only Muslim Operated Shelter
in the State of Oklahoma!
In 2016, the Surayya Anne Foundation ~ Tulsa received an influx of requests for assistance from the immigrant and
refugee families in our community. The Foundation also received requests for aid from hard working low income
families, disabled individuals, those suffering from mental illness, some recently discharged from prison and some
victims of domestic violence.
This year the foundation broke a record by providing 864 assists to people in Tulsa and the surrounding
community. That’s roughly 72 personal assists each month at the foundation. Case Manager, Jenel Fatihah, is
working full time managing all the applications that make their way to the Foundation. Jenel and Executive
Director, Faatimah McLemore, are also jointly managing the Foundation operations and case management of the
families living in the shelter and off-site.
Last year 26 people lived in the shelter, 14 adults and 12 children, including refugees. The logistics and time
involved in managing 26 people onsite, and the hundreds of offsite assists - is a major operation which includes
dozens of client interviews, assessments,
counseling sessions, appointments,
calls, driving, check requests and much
more.
Families who move into the shelter are immediately provided with
food, clothing and their own apartment. Each family or individual
client meets with a case manager, and is provided rides around
town to obtain identification and to fill out job applications.
Once employed, residents work on getting
public housing, food stamps, sooner care and other forms of assistance.
Residents open up a bank account, save money for an apartment, utility deposits, and a car, if needed. Once a
family is stable and has the financial resources to move out, they transition to their own affordable housing.
Residents who follow the program guidelines may stay in the shelter for up to one year.
In addition to shelter operations, many families and individuals approach the Foundation for assistance. Thanks to
your support, we are proud to say that in 2016 the Foundation prevented 53 women,
men and children – from being homeless, totaling $13,492.50 in emergency rental
assists.
In addition, the Surayya Anne Foundation assists families with past due bills (electric,
gas, water) dental and medical assists, food, clothes, donated cars, rides to
appointments and case management. In 2016, $32,731.61 was handed out in zakatable aid.

Client Stories In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful
As Salam alaikum,
May Allah reward everyone who has been and are a part of Surayya Anne Foundation.
The Foundation has helped my family as well as countless others. They have helped my
family to not be evicted and left on the streets by helping with rent through a very, very
difficult time. It was such an incredible relief when I got assistance for my rent. I was
treated with the utmost respect and compassion when I asked the Foundation for
assistance. I was listened to in a way that I know the sisters truly care about me. I was
assigned a caseworker and received the assistance that my family desperately needed.
I received the assistance very quickly Alhamdulillah.
They have also helped me get much needed assistance with my medications that I
would otherwise not have been able to get. If I had not been able to get those
medications, I would have been in a very serious medical condition. I am diabetic, have
asthma as well as other conditions. Those medications were a lifesaver, and I do not say
that lightly.
What I love about Surayya Anne Foundation is that a Muslim foundation, run by Muslim
women with generous donations from the Muslim community. The Foundation helps
Muslim clients as well as clients of other faiths. Anyone who is a client of the Surayya
Anne Foundation will be treated with respect, compassion and your case is
CONFIDIENTIAL. The Foundation is about empowering others. They will follow up with
you and you will find emotional support whatever your situation is.
As well as helping with assistance for bills and medical care, the Foundation offers
scholarships, assistance with food, as well as many other things. I highly recommend
Surayya Anne Foundation as a place where you can give charity and not have to worry
about where your money is going.
Abdullah bin `Umar (R.A) reported that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of Allah said: “The best of companions with Allah is the one who is best to his companions, and the best of neighbors to Allah is the one who is the best of them to his neighbor”. (Tirmidhi) Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) and Aisha (R.A) related Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying as: “Angel Jibril (AS) kept exhorting me about (the rights of) the neighbor so much so that I thought that the neighbor might be included as one of the heirs.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
In these Hadith as well as many others that mentions the rights of neighbors, regardless of their faith tradition or no faith tradition. By assisting people of all faiths, Surayya Anne Foundation is following the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Also, "When one passes away, their good deeds will also come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for them (for the deceased)" Narrated by Abu Hurairah, Sahih Muslim Sadaqah Jariyah includes beneficial knowledge. Truly, Surayya Anne Foundation has empowered me and others in ways that only Allah SWT knows what truly amazing things will be waiting for them on the Day of Judgement. Sincerely, Truly thankful Sister M
My Personal Experience Living at the Foundation
Words will never explain how profound the impact that the
Surayye Anna Foundation has had on my life. I do not
know where I would be right now if it were not for the
boundless love and support of SAF. Alhamdulillah. I was
very worried for a long time about how I was going to get my
life back on track in a place where I have very few resources
and is so far away from my family. Now, I am working in my
career field, saving money, and I am getting closer and closer
every day to getting my family back together. I thank God
every single day for the guidance and support that I have
been given from the SAF.
What I love most about SAF is the sisterhood that I have found. So many other places
that I went to for help post-incarceration were totally judgmental and not
welcoming. My case manager Jenel Fatihah and intern April are sincere, kind, and
warm. They give me the support I need to keep making progress and the guidance I
need to become independent again. I feel like I always have someone close to me,
emotionally, someone who really cares from a genuine place, and whose only ulterior
motive is that I achieve my goals. It can be very hard to find a sisterhood in a place
where you do not know very many people, particularly post-incarceration. I am
beyond blessed to have such a powerful network of women around me.
I wish I were more verbose, or that I was eloquent enough to clearly and concisely
explain what SAF means to me. I am on my way now to getting my son back, I am
beginning an exciting career, and I am finding ways to give back to my community
also. In a very short time, with some elbow grease, patience, and the support of the
SAF, I have hit the ground running. Alhamdulillah. And I am eternally grateful to SAF.
My Experience Asking for Help
Hi, My name is Misti. I wanted to thank the Foundation for the help with our electric
bill. We had fallen into crisis mode. Our family had recently moved to Tulsa. We
quickly found ourselves in need of help. If it were not for the foundation our family
(parents and 6 children) would have had to go without power for over a month. It
was such a relief to find someone who would help with no strings attached.
