From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk“Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum”

Before people ask, “No, I am not reading a biography of Pope Leo XIII.” I can understand whysome might think so, given that last week I wrote about his vision of Satan which led him tocompose the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer, and now I am going to write another article about

him. The main thing that Pope Leo XIII is known for is not his writing the St. Michael Prayer, rather it is his kicking offthe modern Church teaching on social justice through his publication of his encyclical, Rerum novarum, which dealswith the rights and duties of capital and labor. Since we are celebrating Labor Day this weekend, I thought that itwould be appropriate to talk a little about this most important encyclical.

The encyclical was published on May 15, 1891, and it discussed the relationships and mutual duties betweenlabor and capital, as well as government and its citizens. Of primary concern was the need for some amelioration of"The misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class." It supported the rights oflabor to form unions, rejected socialism and unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property.

As a framework for building social harmony, the pope proposed the idea of rights and duties. For example, workers have rights to a fair wage and reasonable working conditions, but they also have duties to their employers;likewise employers have rights and also have duties to their workers. Some of the duties of workers are:

M "fully and faithfully" to perform their agreed-upon tasksMindividually, to refrain from vandalism or personal attacksMcollectively, to refrain from rioting and violenceSome of the duties of employers are:M to provide work suited to each person's strength, gender, and ageMto respect the dignity of workers and not regard them as bondsmenThe Church by reminding workers and employers of their rights and duties can help to form and activate

people's conscience. However, the pope also recommended that civil authorities take a role in protecting workers'rights and in keeping the peace. The law should intervene no further than is necessary to stop abuses.

The Holy Father enunciated three primary principles that must guide the relationship between workers andemployees -- principles that are still the foundation for the Church’s teaching on social justice.

First is the dignity of the human person. This dignity comes not from what a person can do, but from theirvery being -- that they are made in the image and likeness of God. Guidelines to maintain the respect and dignity ofthe person in the workplace would therefore indicate:

M one should be given time off of work to worship God, and allowed time to fulfill family obligations;Mone should have periods of rest and not be expected to work long hours that prevent one from gettingadequate sleep;Mone should not be required to work in unsafe conditions where he is in danger of bodily harm;Mone should not be forced to work in immoral conditions that endanger his soul;Man employer should pay a fair wage and an employee should give a full day's work for a full day's pay.The second principle is the Common Good (sometimes referred to as Solidarity). All people have equal

dignity regardless of social class, and a good government protects the rights and cares for the needs of all its members, both rich and poor. Leo also pointed out that everyone is in some way a contributor to the common good andeveryone's contribution is important. Pope Leo XIII points out that no one should be forced to share his goods, as thatwould be stealing, however, when one is blessed with material wealth, one should use this to benefit as many others aspossible.

Finally there is the principle of Subsidiarity. Pope Leo strongly criticized socialism in that it seeks to replacethe rights and duties of parents, families and communities with the supervision of the state. Subsidiarity teaches thatsocial and political issues should be dealt with at the most immediate (or local) level that is consistent with theirresolution.

“TheonewhodoesjusticewillliveinthepresenceoftheLord.”

MARTHAANDMARYTODAY’SVERSION

Most of us remember the famous Scripturepassage in Luke 10:38-42:

“As they continued their journey heentered a village where a womanwhose name was Martha welcomedhim. She had a sister named Marywho sat beside the Lord at his feetlistening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, cameto him and said, “Lord, do you notcare that my sister has left me bymyself to do the serving? Tell her tohelp me.” The Lord said to her inreply, “Martha, Martha, you areanxious and worried about manythings. There is need of only onething. Mary has chosen the betterpart and it will not be taken fromher.”

Martha was concerned about many things. But,she only needs to be concerned about one. Sheis a “human doing” rather than a “humanbeing.” Mary, on the other hand, sits quietly atthe feet of Jesus listening and contemplating hiswords. Listening to the Word ought to precedeevery activity and service. As Jesus says, “thereis one necessary thing” and this is silentcontemplation – a very counter-culturalconcept.

Imagine you were in a buffet line and there wasone chocolate donut left at the buffet. Chocolatedonuts are your favorite but, there is a long lineahead of you. You are with your family at thebuffet but, you are not focused on thembecause your attention is on the donut. One byone people walk by the donut and chooseanother dessert. Finally, there is one person in

front of you. However, he picks up the donutand starts to walk off. What do you do? Youcould attack the man, grab the donut and runout the door. But, that would not be the rightthing to do, not be prudent and you would payfor the crime. So, you go on with your lifedisappointed. But, you are more disappointeddeep down inside than disappointed that youdidn’t get to eat a chocolate donut.

The reality is you just wasted time in line beinganxious over a donut. The time would havebeen better spent in conversation with yourfamily and those around you buildingrelationships. This is what Jesus is teachingMartha. Jesus is not condemning good worksand deeds. He is not insulting Martha’s effortsand service. He is disapproving of anxiety.

Mary sits at the feet of Jesus and first listens, then contemplates Jesus’ words. She isdedicating herself to listening to Christ fullyand totally.

In today’s fast paced world that is secular andoften anti-religion, it is easy to become too“busy” to listen to Jesus. However, this willonly lead to depression. Or, it will lead to thesurfer mentality where one is always lookingfor the big wave in order to reach a high to leadone away from loneliness and depression. But,you always come crashing down. The answer isthe opposite of busyness. The answer is to findtime to silently listen to God and meditate onhis Word each day. This is important to teachour kids. And, it’s the best anti-depressant onthe market today!
