Portuguese Festa Celebrates Historical Event
Queens for the Portuguese Festa were
Faith Myers, Kari Bailey, and Vivian
Gomes. Below left Doris Dwyer and
Bonnie York look over the many auc-
tion items. Below right a few of the
volunteers are shown preparing food in
the kitchen of the parish hall.
The Portuguese community of St. Pat-
rick Catholic Church held its annual
Fallon Portuguese Festa on May 19 and
20 in the parish hall. The event began
Saturday evening with dancing, the
crowning of royalty, and the serving of
linguica, a type of mildly spicy sausage
of Portugal. On Sunday a Portuguese
procession from the West End complex
to St. Patrick Catholic Church took
place before participants attended 11
a.m. Mass. The festa continued after
Mass with traditional sopas served and
an auction of gift baskets, T-shirts and
ball caps from Portugal, and other inter-
esting items displayed in the parish hall.
The Portuguese Festa is celebrated to
honor Queen Isabella who in the 13th
century promised to offer her precious
jewels to pay for food and to give her
crown to the church if her people found
relief from a widespread famine. Ships
arrived with food following nine days of
prayer. The Queen then fulfilled her
promise and proceeded to the church
where she placed her crown on the altar.
The royalty for this year’s Portu-
guese Festa in Fallon were Faith Myers,
Senior Queen; Kari Bailey, Junior
Queen; and Vivian Gomes, Mini Queen
(pictured at left).
The parish hall was filled to near
capacity of St. Patrick’s parishioners,
their guests, and even folks from out-of-
town came to Fallon to join in the week-
end’s festivities.
