The Portuguese community of St. Pat- rick Catholic Church held its annual Fallon Portuguese Festa on May 19 and 20 in the parish hall. The event began Saturday evening with dancing, the crowning of royalty, and the serving of linguica, a type of mildly spicy sausage of Portugal. On Sunday a Portuguese procession from the West End complex to St. Patrick Catholic Church took place before participants attended 11 a.m. Mass. The festa continued after Mass with traditional sopas served and an auction of gift baskets, T-shirts and ball caps from Portugal, and other inter- esting items displayed in the parish hall. The Portuguese Festa is celebrated to honor Queen Isabella who in the 13th century promised to offer her precious jewels to pay for food and to give her crown to the church if her people found relief from a widespread famine. Ships arrived with food following nine days of prayer. The Queen then fulfilled her promise and proceeded to the church where she placed her crown on the altar. The royalty for this year’s Portu- guese Festa in Fallon were Faith Myers, Senior Queen; Kari Bailey, Junior Queen; and Vivian Gomes, Mini Queen (pictured at left). The parish hall was filled to near capacity of St. Patrick’s parishioners, their guests, and even folks from out-of- town came to Fallon to join in the week- end’s festivities. JULY 4th JULY 7 Ladies Guild Chooses New Officers The Ladies Guild of St. Patrick’s re- cently selected new officers for the coming year: Gloria Robles, President; Rose Marie Krenik, Vice President; and Lorraine Melanson, Secretary. New members are always welcome to join the group which meets regularly on the second Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. in the Rose Room. The Ladies Guild serves the parish in a variety of ways such as holding bake sales to raise funds for scholar- ships awarded in May to women plan- ning to attend college and meeting oth- er requirements; operating the religious goods cabinets located in the Rose Room of the church building; preparing desserts for St. Pat’s annual festival; and hosting one of the Lenten soup suppers. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Ladies Guild, contact the parish office at 423-2846 and leave your name and telephone number or come to one of its monthly meetings. CORRECTION: In the May issue of the parish newsletter, Deacon Ron Cherry was listed as assisting Father Tony at the First Communion Mass on May 6th. This was an error. Deacon Wayne Crooks assisted. 2018 CONFIRMANDS—Fourteen youth of St. Patrick’s were confirmed byThe Most Rever-

end Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of the Diocese of Reno, during 11 a.m. Mass on Sun., May 27,

at the church. Concelebrant was Father Antonio Quijano, Jr., pastor of St. Pat’s, assisted by Dea-

con Ron Cherry. Master of Ceremonies for the Bishop was Gonzalo Castellanos and for St. Pat-

rick’s was Paul Loop. Thanks to all who helped the young people in their faith journey!
