LUCIENNE DRISKILL, the largest contributor to Bethesda
Memorial Hospital, passed away this summer at the age of
83. Mrs. Driskill was a philanthropist in every sense of the
word and was responsible for the creation of two very
important Centers of Excellence at Bethesda.
Bethesda Memorial Hospital's mission to provide
"quality health services in a caring manner" has been
dramatically enhanced throughout the past few years in
large part to Mrs. Driskill’s support to establish the Walter
S. and Lucienne Driskill Center for Caring Excellence in 2004,
which through one-on-one mentoring, Bethesda’s Care
Coach and Patient Advocates work with every staff member
who provides direct patient care to help them understand
and demonstrate the art of caring when providing clinical
and support services for patients. Nearly 1,000 employeeshave received this special training since the Center’s inception, and this year, Bethesda’s patient satisfaction scores exceededthe national benchmark.
Recently, Mrs. Driskill gave another significant
contribution to establish the Driskill Endovascular Centerproviding a dedicated, state-of-the-art facility for Bethesda
to treat patients with vascular disease with minimally
invasive surgery. Bethesda Healthcare System President
& CEO Robert Hill said, “While we were deeply saddened by
the loss of Mrs. Driskill earlier this year, we know that she
would have been proud to see that this facility is providing
hope for so many patients who were otherwise not
candidates for surgery.”
The Driskill Endovascular Center specializes in
treating patients with thoracic aneurysms and stenoses, or
blockages, of the carotid arteries.
“Mrs. Driskill touched the lives of many members
of the Bethesda team, and through her personal compassion
showed new and enduring ways to treat our patients with
dignity, compassion and the highest level of care,” said KayHarvey, Bethesda Hospital Foundation Executive Director.
“She is missed by all of us who knew her and had the honor
to work with her on behalf of our patients,” she added.
About Bethesda Fall 20091
“When you’re well you have many wishes. . .when you’re sick, you have only one.”– Peter Blum, Bethesda Hospital Foundation Vice Chair
Peter Blum, a Beacon Society member (our highest giving
level), has long believed in the importance of helping
others and one way in which he has had a tremendous
impact is through his support of our community hospital.
A founder and generous supporter of the Blum
Family scholarship program, Mr. Blum, the Hospital and
a handful of donors have come together to provide nearly
$400,000 in college scholarships to 85 children of
Hospital employees over the past decade.
Mr. Blum also cares about patients while they’re
in the hospital. Along with Lady, his beautiful certified
therapy dog, he visits patients each week at Bethesda.
He says, “Patients light up when they see Lady. They
reach out their arm to pet her and our presence is
definitely a comfort to them.”
He adds, “I’m proud to give what I can to help the
wonderful staff of the hospital and the foundation and
thank them for all the care they’ve provided my family –
and so many others – over the years.”

Bethesda Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit organization
established for the benefit and support of Bethesda Memorial Hospital.
Its purpose is to assist the Hospital in accomplishing its mission
through the acquisition, management and disbursement of
philanthropic assets, and by building
support of the Hospital within the community.
Chairman’s MessageCounting on Your Spirit of Giving Bethesda
INVEST IN LIFE
ABOUT
“In the midst of “season”, I hope you will be inspired by the spirit of giving to help our
community non-profit hospital and rejoice in the satisfaction of knowing that your support
allows us to continue to be here for you, your friends and your neighbors when you need us
most. I believe the more you give, the more everyone in our community will receive.
Everyone’s support, no matter the size of the gift, will help us make a difference for the South
Florida community.
As you know, thanks to the generosity of the community, Bethesda has established world-
class Centers of Excellence, which you can read more about here in our newsletter.
We need your help to continue. Here are a couple of ways that we’ve recently had a
tremendous impact in the community:
Learning of an urgent need
for life-saving modems in
local fire rescue
emergency vehicles,
community members
rallied together to donate
the funds to provide the
LIFENET STEMI
Management system by
Physio-Control, the first
web-based system of its
kind, to reduce door-to-
balloon (D2B) times for
patients in South Palm
Beach County who experience a dangerous form of heart attack known as STEMI (ST elevation
myocardial infarction). STEMI poses a serious threat to the heart muscle, and the quicker
patients receive treatment the more likely they are to have a positive outcome.
This new system allows Bethesda’s emergency department and/or the cardiac catheterization
lab to prepare for the patient’s arrival, while the patient is being transported to the hospital,
thus reducing D2B time and saving the heart muscle. This information is simultaneously
transmitted to the cardiologist on call so that he or she can assemble the appropriate team in
advance of the patient’s arrival.
It is thrilling to know that the spirit of giving that prompted a few private citizens to make a
donation for this technology is now greatly helping our entire community served by the Palm
Beach County Fire Rescue and the City of Boynton Beach Fire Rescue.
Just last month, our Women of Grace luncheon raised much-needed funds to purchase vital
equipment for our tiniest and newest members of our community born at Bethesda and cared
for in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Read more in this issue about the impact that
this event is having on families in our community.
We are counting on your spirit of giving this season to help us continue to provide the best
healthcare to everyone in our community. Please use the enclosed self-addressed envelope
to make a gift to help. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Daniel E. Burns, Chair of the Board

PAULA BREWER, a 40-year-old Wellington dental hygenist,
remembers starting her morning routine a little more
than a year ago with a shower and then falling as she
reached for a towel. Falling, and not being able to get up.
Paula – youthful, vibrant, active and in
seemingly good health, had suffered a stroke. Rushed to
a local hospital for treatment, tests revealed
she had a blood clot in her brain. Surgeons
tried to remove the clot, but were not
entirely successful – and her carotid artery
was accidentally nicked in the process.
Paula’s family was told to prepare for the
worst – the surgeons thought she would
bleed to death over night.
Paula’s will to live got her through
the night and the procedure had allowed just
enough blood flow to prevent permanent
paralysis. She was told her carotid artery
would heal on its own, but she was paralyzed
on her left side. Doctors determined she
needed rehabilitation to help restore
mobility. Ten days later she was transferred
to Bethesda’s Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation
Medicine. Eager to recover, Paula began her
rehabilitation sessions only to face another life-
threatening hurdle. In one of her sessions, she began
having trouble breathing and her blood pressure
dropped. Her skin was cold and clammy. She was in
cardiogenic shock.
Her cardiologist Dr. Steven Borzak recalls, “We
knew Paula had a blood clot in her lungs, and that she
would die if it were not removed. I called the
interventional radiologist and the interventional
cardiologist, neither of whom felt that they would be able
to remove enough of the clot to allow the heart to
circulate blood through the lungs.”
His next call was to cardiovascular and thoracic
surgeon Michael Carmichael, M.D., who Dr. Borzak says
acknowledged that the procedure she needed, an
emergency pulmonary embolectomy, has an
80% operative mortality, but believed it was
Paula’s best shot at survival. Dr.
Carmichael immediately took Paula into
surgery.
Dr. Carmichael and the Heart Institute
medical team performed the open-heart
surgery finding three clots – including one
that was 12 inches that stayed intact even
as it was pulled out. Dr. Carmichael says
that in his 28 years of surgery, he had never
seen a blood clot that large.
The surgery also revealed more – a hole
in Paula’s heart, which Dr. Carmichael
believes was the cause of her stroke.
Now a little over a year later, thanks to a
lot of rehabilitation and determination, she has regained
almost all of her mobility and her prognosis is good. She
has resumed many of her normal activities, even riding
her bike again. Not able to go back to work just yet, she’s
decided to join Bethesda’s team – as a volunteer, helping
to provide hope and encouragement to patients in the
Cornell Institute going through similar situations as she
experienced.
Paula says it’s a miracle she’s alive today and
she credits the Bethesda medical team with saving
her life.

THE WOMEN OF GRACE LUNCHEON CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF GIVING THANKS
BETHESDA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION’S 10th Annual Women
of Grace Luncheon was a tremendous success as five
ladies who have contributed remarkable volunteer
service to local organizations were honored. Celebrating
“10 Years of Giving Thanks”, this sold-out event was
held in October at the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach.
An elegant, heart-warming and inspiring event,
proceeds benefited Bethesda’s Center for Women &
Children raising nearly $240,000 to support a newly
renovated state-of-the-art maternity unit re-opening in
December and the purchase of new equipment including
“Giraffe” bed incubators which imitate a mother’s womb
for the most critically ill babies in our care, some
weighing less than a pound. Last year, 2,900 babies were
born at Bethesda, and of those, 345 spent their first
weeks in our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Center is staffed 24-hours-a-day by a highly trained
medical team including a Neonatologist, providing the
highest level of care for newborns.
