Weatherford’s synchronized fracturing service provides everything that today’s fracturing operations demand

Verify: Microseismic monitoring

Real-time microseismic data gathered during fracturing operations and in-treatment-well microseismic surveys conducted on pilot wells can be used to not only monitor the reservoir behavior but to adjust fracturing parameters on the fly for optimum results. It reveals the most data obtainable about the quality of the completion and provides the only 3-D view of a well’s drainage network. Our microseismic surveys form the key technology for maximizing the economic development of an unconventional reservoir; can identify unexpected fracture behavior; can reduce the time and costs of fracturing operations; and can lead to higher-production rates, lower decline rates and less water incursion. Our microseismic monitoring service produces fracture maps and can even look at fluid-front movements during production. We apply monitoring services to hydraulic-fracture mapping, enhanced recovery operations, carbon capture and storage, production monitoring, and other applications that require short- or long-term monitoring of microseismic activity.

Analyze: Wellsite services

After drilling has begun, our wellsite services becomes an integral part of the information loop with the drilling rig. As cuttings and used drilling mud become available, wellsite services employ a variety of analytical tools: source-rock analysis to measure available hydrocarbon content, potential hydrocarbon generation, total organic content, thermal maturity and aid in kerogen typing, as well as conversion; and mud gas analysis to accurately characterize formation gas samples from the surface in real time. The empirical data from these tests helps to determine hydrocarbon fluid types and contact points, identify pay zones, support geosteering, determine reservoir characterization in horizontal wells, and to inform well placement and completion operations based on brittleness.

Fracturing has extended beyond marginal new wells or mature wells with declining production. In tight shales, the act of fracturing now encompasses the drilling and completion of the reservoir section. Today this broadening of fracturing’s application has also increased the expectation of what a fracturing service should include.

Upon entering the fracturing business in 2001, Weatherford relied on third-party services for core evaluation, wellsite analysis and microseismic verification. Today, we offer these services integrated with fracturing execution. We do this because we know that performing a tight-shale fracture job properly requires a synchronized, integrated and scientific approach if your production goals are to be accomplished.

Weatherford answers this challenge with FracologySM: the science of hydraulic fracturing. Fracology is the synchronization of science, technology and experience to ensure efficient and effective production from a reservoir. Through the seamless integration of our laboratory, wellsite formation evaluation, fracturing and microseismic monitoring services, we can evaluate, analyze, execute and verify your fracturing operation, ultimately helping you improve reservoir delivery and field recovery.

Evaluate: Formation evaluation services

Located around the world, Weatherford plays a vital role in drilling and producing conventional and unconventional wells. Specific to tight-shale development, our scientists and technicians test core and cutting samples to determine the viability of a candidate well, as well as the best approach for optimum drilling and fracturing. The main disciplines involved are geochemistry to determine organic richness, shale rock properties to measure porosity, permeability, mineralogy and other rock properties; desorption and

adsorption work to identify gas content, gas quality and gas storage capacity; and rock mechanics to determine the mechanical strength, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and proppant embedment characteristics. Supported with information from these resources, operators can drill with a higher degree of confidence and experience a higher degree of success.

Execute: Hydraulic fracturing services

When it’s time to fracture the formation, we fine-tune the process to maximize your hydrocarbon yield. Working with data from the wellsite laboratory and continuous feedback from our microseismic monitoring service, our expert crews can plan the optimal fracture design and respond to geological structure complexities and changing stress conditions as the fracturing operation proceeds. With state-of-the-art fluid technologies, along with carefully selected proppants, we have changed the nature of hydraulic fracturing. What some in the industry once considered a brute-force attack on reservoirs, we have refined to a nuanced science that works with the formations to increase your production and extend the life of your field.
