The Islamic Center of Long Island, ICLI, is an organization which serves the needs of the Muslim community of Long Island. A center for worship, community engagement, Islamic education, and cultivating interfaith relations.

Since its inception in April 1982, the brothers and sisters belonging to ICLI have been working day and night for the cause of Islam, seeking only the pleasure of Allah (swt). I personally invite you to contribute to the center’s ongoing projects, whether it is a small or large contribution, all are welcome. IN THE QURAN(StagesofHumanCreation)

Allah said in the Quran: “We createdman from an extract of clay. ThenWe made him as a drop in a placeof settlement, firmly fixed. ThenWe made the drop into an alaqah(leech, suspended thing, and bloodclot), thenWe made the alaqa intoa mudghah (chewed substance)...” (23:12-14). This verse speaks about the stages of man’s embryonic development. Literally, the Arabic word alaqah has three meanings: (1) leech, (2) suspended thing, and (3) blood clot. In comparing a leech to an embryo in the alaqah stage, we find similarity between the two. Also, the embryo at this stage obtains nourishment from the blood of the mother, similar to the leech, which feeds on the blood of others.

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLES IN THE QURAN

(Mountains)Allah said in the Quran: “Have Wenot made the earth as a bed, andthe mountains as pegs?” (78:6-7). Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the surface of the ground and that these roots can reach several times their elevations above the surface of the ground. This scientific fact was only introduced in the latter half of the 20th century. Mountains also play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth. They hinder the shaking of the earth. Allah has said in the Quran: “AndHehassetfirmmountainsintheearthsothatitwouldnotshakewithyou...” (16:15).

(OriginoftheUniverse)Modern science clearly indicates that, at one point in time, the whole universe was nothing but a cloud of ‘smoke’ (i.e. an opaque highly dense and hot gaseous composition). Scientists now can observe new stars forming out of the remnants of that ‘smoke’. Allah has said in the Quran: “Then He turnedto the heaven when it was smoke.” (41:11). Because the earth and the heavens above have been formed from this same ‘smoke,’ we conclude that the earth and the heavens were one connected entity. Then out of this homogeneous ‘smoke,’ they formed and separated from each other. Allah has said in the Quran: “Have notthose who disbelieved known thattheheavensandtheearthwereoneconnectedentity,thenWeseparatedthem?” (21:30).

(TheSun’sTrajectory)Allah said in the Quran: “It isHeWhocreated night and day and the sunandmoon, each one swimming in asphere.” (21:33). The word “swim” in this verse is describing the movement of the sun in space. It’s implying that the sun does not move randomly through space but that it rotates around its axis and follows a course as it does so. The fact that the sun is not fixed in position but rather follows a specific trajectory is also stated in another verse: “Andthesunrunstoitsrestingplace.ThatisthedecreeoftheAlmighty,theAll-Knowing.” (36:38). Modern day science proved that the sun moves along a path known as the Solar Apex in the path of the star Vega at an incredible speed of 720,000 kmph.

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLES IN THE QURAN(Seas&Rivers)

Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity, and density. For example, Mediterranean Sea water is warm, saline, and less dense, compared to Atlantic ocean water. When Mediterranean Sea water enters the Atlantic over the Gibraltar sill, it moves several hundred kilometers into the Atlantic at a depth of about 1000 meters with its own warm, saline, and less dense characteristics. The Mediterranean water stabilizes at this depth. Although there are large waves, strong currents, and tides in these seas, they do not mix or transgress this barrier. Allah has said in the Quran: “He has set free the twoseas meeting together. There is abarrier between them. They do nottransgress.”(55:19-20).

(Clouds)Scientists studied one kind of rain clouds; the ‘cumulonimbus cloud’. Meteorologists studied and found that these clouds go through the following steps to produce rain: 1) clouds are pushed by the wind to an area where they converge. 2) The small clouds join to form a larger one. 3) Updraft movements cause the cloud body to grow vertically in a stacking manner, which in turn causes the cloud body to stretch into cooler regions of the atmosphere, and drops of rain and hail formulate. When they become too heavy, they begin to fall as rain and hail. The Quran says: “Haveyounot seenhow Allah makes the clouds movegently, then joins them together,then makes them into a stack, andthen you see the rain come out ofit?” (24:43).

The Sun has been emitting heat for around 5 billion years as a result of the constant chemical reactions taking place on its surface. At one point, these reactions will eventually come to an end, and the Sun will lose all its energy and finally go out. Allah said in the Quran: “Whenthesun iscompacted inblackness.” (81:1). Also in Sura ar-Rad, verse 2, Allah said: “Allah isHeWho raisedup theheavens without any support, andthen established Himself firmly onthe Throne. (ARedRoseintheSky)Allah said in the Quran: “When theHeaven shall be cleft asunder,and become rose red, like stainedleather.” (55:37). This term compares an image appearing in the sky to a red rose. This description bears a close similarity to red celestial bodies with a plicate appearance, especially the “Rosette Nebula”. Nebula is the name given to cloud-like masses of gas in space. Before they become nebulae they are stars, and since these stars are very large, they release gasses into space because of their high internal pressure and temperatures. These erruptions of gas are very large and fast. One type of nebula is known as the “Rosette Nebula” because of its resemblance to a rose.

(BoneLossinOldAge)Allah said in the Quran, at the tongue of Prophet Zakariya: “And said, ‘MyLord,my bones have gone frail andmyhead iscrownedwithwhite,butin calling on You, My Lord, I havenever been disappointed’.” (19:4). Bone scanning performed taking detailed measurements using modern technology makes it possible to image the disease known to the medical world as “osteoporosis,” or bone loss. Bone, which rather resembles a honeycomb, stores significant quantities of essential minerals such as calcium. Bone mass begins to gradually decline from around the age of 40. In its more advanced stages, this disease, which is mainly seen in the elderly and manifests itself as a loss of bone tissue mass, leads to easy bone breakage.

It should be remembered that the understanding of astronomy of the time perceived the world differently. It was then thought that the world was a flat plane and all scientific calculations and explanations were based on this belief. However, the Glorious Quran has employed the most definitive words when it came to describing the universe.

(TheExpandingEarth)Allah said in the Quran: “It isHeWhostretched out the earth and placedfirmly embedded mountains andrivers in it and made two types ofeverykindoffruit.Hecoversoverdaywithnight.ThereareSignsinthatforpeoplewhoreflect.” (13:3). The use of the word “stretched out” in the context of the earth in referring to the formation of mountains and rivers is exceedingly wise. Because looking at the scientific explanation of the formation earth, it does appear that mountains and rivers are formed through the stretching and expansion of the earth. Modern science confirmed that, at one point in time, all the continents had originally been one single landmass.

EAC Community Service Program - Accepts and supports community service members by allowing them to receive community service hours while at ICLI performing various tasks.

Funeral Arrangements for Islamic Burial. - At ICLI we value a proper Islamic Burial, the needs for the grieving family and our desire to do our best to serve your rights. Our services include full burial, release of body, washing of body, kafan and offering of a grave plot. For more information or questions, please contact us.

Building Use/Hall Rental - The expansion of ICLI now provides more areas for building usage allowing the community to have their functions at ICLI. Our facility is open for conferences, seminars, nikkah ceremonies, haqiqahs and other engagements. Please visit our website to print and fill out the Building Use application form for your engagement. The Masjid/Lower level can accommodate a maximum capacity of 175 People. The courtyard (open air) accommodates 200 people approximately and the Athletic & Events Center (Basketball Court) can accommodate a maximum capacity of 250 people.

“IC” Kids Preschool - Designed to meet the needs of a growing number of parents who are looking for a head start in the English curriculum as well as an Islamic education for their child. The teacher provides structured, well-planned and fun activities in a safe and caring environment. Available for children between the ages of 3 and 5 who are potty trained.

IC PASS - To make it convenient for our community and well-wishers to donate funds, ICLI has initiated this Auto Donation Program. Please call the office for a copy of the form.

ICLI Cub & Girl Scouts - In accordance with the Nassau County Girls & Boys Scouts of Long Island, we build girls & boys of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Call the office for time and location of meetings.

ICLI Travel Programs - ICLI offers an Annual Hajj Program Package & an Annual Winter/Spring Seerah Umra Group Travel Program under the leadership of ICLI Executive Director - (Mufti) Mohammad Farhan. Call the ICLI office for further information on dates, prices & reservation details.

Interfaith Institute - Established to foster better understanding of Islam and dispel misconceptions about Muslims led by a diversified Board of Trustees. To promote interfaith dialogue and understanding among different faiths through conferences, seminars, essay contests and proactive education.

Jummah Services - Based on the tradition of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the weekly congregational prayers for Muslims are held on Fridays. ICLI welcomes visitors-women/men/school children-to observe the services, which include a khutbah (sermon) in English followed by prayers, which are always in Arabic.

Letter Writing Campaign - Making our voice heard via weekly petitions on human rights and other issues of concern.

Library - Has a large selection of Qur’an with translation in various languages, books on history, Hadith, basic beliefs, etc.

Marriage/Nikah - Performance of Marriage/Nikah ceremony.

Marriage Counselling- ICLI offers secure and confidential counseling services. Executive Director Mufti Farhan conducts Marriage Counselling by appointments.

Media Consultation - On issues relating to Islam and Muslims.

New Muslims (Shahadah) Program - To provide a strong support system and a welcoming environment to facilitate the transition of new Muslims and their families to the Islam.

Qur’an Classes - Offered from beginners to Hifz level and are held:

September - June: Monday - Friday 4:30 - 7 PM

July - August: Monday to Thursday: Timing TBD

Full-Time Hifz Program - Offered to students looking to Hifz the Quran, full-time for ages 5 & up.

Monday - Friday (8AM - 12:30 PM) and Saturdays (8AM - 12:30 PM) (schedules subject to change)

Sister’s Halaqa - A forum for sisters to learn the Qur’an, hadith and issues related to day to day life in Urdu, every Monday 10-1pm. English Halaqa- Journey through Quran program, Every Thursday 11-1pm.

Ghazi Yahya Khankan Scholarship of ICLI - Awarded at ICLI’s Annual Dinner in late November of each year to students graduating High School or students pursuing their undergraduate, graduate or PhD studies. The application window will open from September 1st till October 15th of each year. Please check the website or call the office for further details.

Sports Programs - ICLI offers Sports programs for Kids and Youth from Kindergarten to Grade 10 throughout the year with discounts offered for members/siblings.

Weekend School - Offering comprehensive Islamic Studies for ages 3 to l8 year-olds on Saturdays and/or Sundays between 10 AM and 1 PM. Registration is required.

Weekend Seminars - Interactive and educational sessions covering various topics which include the Quranic knowledge, Hadith, History of Islam, community related topics and current events.

Visits to ICLI - First hand introduction to Islam and Muslims offered to groups or individuals.

Youth Programs - Designed for high school students in order to cultivate leaders through various activities and promotion of new skills.
