Dear Parishioners, Liturgical Music awakens the imagination and touches the heart! Here at St. John Brebeuf we are fortunate to have Marek Rachelski, along with our other musicians, to lead us in hymns of praise and comfort at our Sunday Liturgies. As always, you are invited to pick up a hymnal and join along. The Sunday Mass should be a communal experience where all participate no matter what their personal ability. He who sings prays twice! Call the office today if you are interested in being part of one of the choirs or approach one our music ministers! New Hymnals As you perhaps noted we are purchasing new hymnals, Rit-ual Song, 2nd edition. This hardbound hymnal is beautiful, durable, comprehensive in scope, earth-friendly, and eco-nomical. They are shipped once and may last 10-15 years, for a savings of $50,000.00 over ten years. Thus, this pur-chase will reduce yearly cost, save paper and enhance our liturgical experience. Furthermore, we are inviting you to make a donation of $20.00 per book to cover the costs of 1,000 hymnals we will purchase. The memorial bookplates celebrating the memory of a departed loved one or simply honoring your family name will be placed on the inside back cover to be read each time they are opened and used. Religious Education The Religious Education Program has been undergoing a review as I mentioned last week with the change of leader-ship. After looking carefully at our Wednesday and Thurs-day evening program, it was decided to consolidate the pro-gram to Wednesday evening only, 5:00-6:30 pm. The Thursday evening program had only a handful of registra-tions at this point. We have found that the student attend-ance has diminished over recent years as parents have found the 6:30-8:00 pm timeframe as being too late for the children. In the winter months, especially, it's very dark and cold for the children to be out after a full day of school. The move to a single evening will unify the program at-tendees by allowing better interaction among all partici-pants. Registration forms are available at the Parish Office or download to print from our website www.sjbrebeuf.org/education. Parents are encouraged to call 847-966-3269 to find out the benefits of volunteering as a catechist/teacher. Keep Striving As we enter the fall parish activities, we are reminded that the spiritual life is a constant adventure and a challenge to grow just as much as an athlete who desires to run a half marathon or a senior who is trying to maintain strength and agility after a major or minor surgery. While we are often reluctant to push ourselves or have others tell us to “do one more” -- as I sometimes felt when I broke my arm some

time ago -- in the end we know deep down we are better off if we keep “striving” to grow physically, psychologically, and spiritually. By God's grace we can find wholeness and peace. Remember, His grace comes to all of us, the worthy and unworthy! Some of the opportunities are the Sunday Scripture Pro-gram, Uncle Pete Ministry to the Poor, and “Alpha” which asks the big questions that we all wonder about over dinner in a friendly, non-judgmental, informal environment. We are blessed to have many social groups, devotional oppor-tunities, masses, a day school, and an evening religious ed-ucation for grade school children to name a few. In many ways we are a full-service parish with 165 funerals a year, 101 baptisms, 25 weddings, along with seven masses each weekend, with two of those being celebrated in the Polish Language. No parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago can match our facilities with the Father May Ministry Center, ample parking, a large school, a wood floor gym, and beau-tiful church. Please inquire about how you can be a part of this wonderful parish and then you'll know why our parking lots are always full! Our parish fiscal year ended June 30th. In a few months we will compile in great detail our annual report. At this time, I would like to point out that we ended the year not only be-hind the projected budget revenue expectations that we needed to keep up with rising expenses but also behind in comparison to last year. We were short $28,703.00 below the previous year’s income. In addition, our school enroll-ment fell around 10 students below expectations, which led to a substantial increase in parish support to the school. I'm happy to report that we are just short of our enrollment goal this year with 246 students. While this is very good, overall we are straining to maintain our present ministries and our ability to maintain our facilities properly. At this time I remind you to make up for any offerings that you missed because you were away on vacation. In the summer months the parish often experiences the lowest weekly giving level because people are naturally away on vacation. However, our expenses continue each week! So, please keep this in mind and mail your donation in or make up your Sunday gift to the parish upon your return. Happy Labor Day! Plan to attend the Oktoberfest and Car-nival scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 20, 21 and 22! Fr. Mike Meany

Notice: Due to an Archdiocese of Chicago private event there will be no 8:30am Mass on Friday, Sept. 6th. The Adoration Chapel, PMC & campus will also be closed. School will be open.

Drodzy Parafianie, Muzyka liturgiczna budzi wyobraźnię i dotyka serca! Tutaj w St. John Brebeuf mamy to szczęście, że Marek Rachelski wraz z naszymi innymi muzykami prowadzi nas w hymnach uwielbienia i pociechy podczas naszych niedzielnych liturgii.

Dzięki łasce Bożej możemy znaleźć pełnię i pokój. Pamiętajcie, Jego łaska dociera do nas wszystkich, godnych i niegodnych! Ks. Mike Meany

SJB IS GETTING NEW HYMNALS THIS FALL! Over the last three years a study of our current missal took place and a comparison with other available hymnals was made. We have determined that while the current pew books are adequate, we can do better and spend far less! We can save $50,000 over ten years just by the purchase of a hardbound hymnal! Our newly selected hymnals, RITUAL SONG, 2nd edition, are beautiful, durable, com-

prehensive in scope, earth-friendly and economical. They are shipped only once and may last 10-15 years. We invite each of you to purchase a hymnal through envelopes made availa-ble in the near future. Donor bookplates will be placed on the inside back cover of the hymnal to be read each time they are opened and used. We are suggesting a $20.00 dona-tion per book to cover the cost of the 1,000 hymnals we will purchase.

We begin at 6:30 pm with an informal dinner. Next is a brief video presentation led by one of the original Alpha developers, Nicky Gumbel. We then discuss the evening’s topic in small groups. We finish by 8:15. The fall Alpha sessions look like this: September 9: Session 1, Is There More to Life Than This? September 16: Session 2, Who is Jesus? September 23: No Alpha, Join the Holy Name Men’s Club for the Bear’s Game! September 30: Session 3, Why Did Jesus Die? October 7: Session 4, How Can I Have Faith? October 14 -- No Alpha, Columbus Day October 21: Session 5, Why and How Do I Pray? October 28: Session 6, Why and How Should I Read the Bible? November 4: Session 7, How Does God Guide Us? November 18: Session 13, Why and How Should I Tell Others? November 25: Session 14, Does God Heal Today? Here are what some of our pilot Alpha members said: “It was wonderful! I looked forward to each weekly meeting and connecting with newfound friends interested in learning about their faith. I learned a lot from the presentations. The food was great, too. It was low stress and I liked that I didn’t have to prepare and could just be.” “I was not sure what Alpha was all about and how effective it would be. It was a good experience. Great dis-cussions. Helped deepen my faith.” We hope you will join us! Please sign up today at the parish office or at www.sjbrebeuf.org/alpha so we know how many people to expect!

Prayer for Alpha at SJB This week we pray that the Lord help all guests to attend each session. Pray against anything that may prevent their attend-ance, such as illness or schedul-ing conflicts. Information about Alpha is at www.sjbrebeuf.org/alpha

Join Our Scripture Study Group This September Our scripture study program is ready to begin the fall program. We will be going over the letters to the Galatians and Romans. Galatians addresses Paul's understanding of Christian freedom and justification by faith. He reprimands the Galatians for deserting the Gospel by seeking justification through circumcision rather than through faith in Christ, who achieved our salvation by his sacri-fice on the cross. Romans is the longest of Paul's letters. It addresses the universal reality of sin in the world and the need for salvation in Jesus Christ. It explores both the strength and limits of the law of Moses. Paul examines the new life attained in the Holy Spirit as God's gift and proclaims the mystery of God's plan to save Israel. Romans also highlights the ethical demands of the Gospel. This will be a two-part study. Our Fall program will last seven weeks, and the Lent will last seven weeks. Our study will begin on 09/29/19. We meet every week on Sunday mornings from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Our study fee is $10.00. Registration slips can be dropped off at the Parish office. Contact Chester Gilbert at 847-966- 4789 or [email protected] for more information.

JOY IN JESUS The “Joy in Jesus” Sunday program is open to children ages 3 ½ (by September 1) through Kindergarten age. Classes are held in the school during the 10:45 Mass.

The program was formed to provide children with a basic foundation for a future un-derstanding of Christian revelations. Emphasis is given to development of self-awareness in the children and their place in the Christian community. The children in the “Joy in Jesus” 2018-2019 program ended their session with a prayer service. The children prepared for this celebration for several weeks by making a celebration tablecloth and other symbolic items depict-ing topics discussed throughout the year. Registration will be held on Sunday, September 8th and 15th with classes beginning Sunday, September 22nd.

The registration fee for the year is $40.

The Sacrament of Marriage Strengthening your marriage Good marriages can always be made better!

Pope Francis described marriage as “a project to be worked on together” and a “process of growth” (Amoris Laetitia, no. 218, 221). The Church provides many opportunities for spouses to deepen their love for each other. There are many organizations dedicated to creating time and space for mar-riages to grow, and for helping parents raise their children well. Make your marriage a priority by seeking out enrich-ment opportunities together. Please visit our website at www.sjbrebeuf.org for links to helpful resources or contact the parish office at

Wincentego a Paulo? Jeśli znasz rodzinę która potrzebu-je pomocy prosze zadzwoń do naszego Stowarzyszenia St. Vincent de Paul. Razem możemy pomóc cierpiacym i po-trzebującym.
