  • TAXCO, GUERRERO, MEXICO Be in prayer today as our third mission team is finishing up their trip to Taxco and visiting with our missionary and church planter, Giovanni. On the back of this insert you will find an update from Giovanni. Following is some information on Taxco to help you as you pray for the people there and for Giovanni’s work. First, the “Chamber of Commerce” pitch… Taxco de Alarcon, Mexico's silver capital, is a charming colonial town nestled in the mountains of Guerrero state between Mexico City and Acapulco. The town's winding cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses with red tile roofs, and its impressive Santa Prisca cathedral all combine to make Taxco a picturesque town. Those interested in purchasing silver will find the greatest selection here. In 1522, the Spanish conquistadors learned that the inhabitants Taxco paid tribute to the Aztecs in silver, and they set about conquering the region, and setting up mines. In the 1700s, Don Jose de la Borda, a Frenchman of Spanish descent, arrived in the area and became very wealthy from silver mining. He commissioned the baroque Santa Prisca Church that is the centerpiece of Taxco's zócalo. The town's silver industry later experienced a lull until the arrival of Willam Sprat-ling in 1929, who opened a silver workshop. His designs, based on pre-Hispanic art, became very popular. He trained other artisans and is thought to be responsi-ble for Taxco's reputation as the silver capital of Mexico. ———- From other sources you get perhaps a more realistic view of the demographics, history and economy of Taxco. Taxco's development indicators are fairly good relative to other towns and cities in Mexico. As of 2010, only 38% of residents aged 15 and over lacked a basic education (including 17% who did not finish primary education), and approximately 6% of residents aged 15 and over were illiterate. Approximately 87% of homes had refrigerators, and 51% had washing machines. Only 8% of homes lacked piped water, and 5% had a dirt floor. Silverwork and tourism are the mainstays of the economy. Mining is no longer a major employer in the city as the last major mining operation closed in 2007 due to the depletion of reserves and labor problems. Most commercial activity related to silver is the production and sale of silver jewelry and goods. Streets in the town are filled with silver shops. The city has been named one of Mexico's "Pueblos Mági-cos" (Magical Towns) due to the quality of the silverwork, the colonial constructions and the surrounding scenery. Located on a major toll road, Taxco has two long-distance bus stations but no airport. Transport within Taxco is generally on foot, by taxi, or by "burritos" or "combis"—converted Volkswagen vans that serve as minibuses. The city of Taxco lies on very rugged terrain and has steep, irregular streets. The streets are also narrow and generally lack sidewalks, making them picturesque but dangerous. Most are paved with dark stones, adorned with lines, pictures and mu-rals of white stone. Some pictures in the street are from the Zodiac and meant to indicate certain business activities in times past. One example is the sign of Taurus near the Church of Santa Prisca, which used to indicate the area of butcher shops. Corn is a staple of food in Taxco. Common dishes include pozole and tacos. Dishes distinctive of Taxco include jumiles (a type of stink bug) prepared in tacos or moles, fiambre, cecina natural (a cured meat), plum and bean tamales, and a drink called berta. Basketball is the most popular sport in Taxco. In the city of Taxco, there are public basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, as well as soccer fields. Holy Week in Taxco involves 10 elaborate processions of 1.5 miles each, be-tween Palm Sunday and Easter, which have gained international fame. These commemorations date back to at least 1622.

Information RE: Southern Mission Zone of Taxco Sept. 26-30 Missionary Giovanni Yanick Escobar Hernandez I thank God that I found grace in His eyes and He allows me to serve Him by planting a church in Taxco. I am thankful for the Baptist Church of Skiatook, Oklahoma for its obedience to God and your service to Him. Sept. 26th, Mrs. Elvia, the local rental owner, upon finding out that I did not have a bed to sleep on, rented me a room inside her home, where I had the opportunity to share the message of salvation and the reason why we are here. Sept. 27th, was a day of preparation for the Installation worship. In the afternoon I picked up the chairs the Gethsemane Church had loaned me as well as speakers and a small pulpit. Later on I met the pastor Heath Tucker and the brothers from the Baptist Church of Skiatook, Oklahoma. I took them around the place, we spoke and prayed. Sept. 28th, in the afternoon I visited Victor Gomez and Cesar Gomez, two brothers who are unsaved, that have a paint store near the house. I shared with them the reason why I am here and I invited them to opening worship. Afterwards we had the Installation worship, a moment when God strongly touched my heart and confirmed my calling. After the Installation worship and a delicious dinner, I returned home where I spoke with Mrs. Elvia. The Holy Spirit touched her heart, and we prayed for her with my friend David Galicia. She accepted biblical discipleship. Sept. 29th, I said good bye to the brothers from the Baptist Church of Skiatook, Oklahoma and few hours later my friend David Galicia. I returned to the house and visited with a man named Jesus, who repairs bicycles and motorcycles in the neighborhood. He introduced me to a friend of his named Sergio de la Rosa, an event organizer for extreme bicycling. I be-came friends with both of them and I encouraged them to pray and to fol-low biblical discipleship. In the afternoon I visited a rehabilitation center named CRREAD, where I shared a song and my testimony. That night upon arriving home, I had the first discipleship with Mrs. Elvia sharing with her who Jesus Christ is. Sept. 30th, gave a summary of remembrance for the neighborhoods of Zapata and Zacazontla. Afterwards I returned to visit with Victor Gomez and Cesar Gomez having a deeper conversation and they shared more about their lives. I prayed for them. Afterwards I went with pastor Samuel to the Box Mission, where I met with the children and showed support to the class. These have been very productive days in regards to the atmosphere of the people. Recognizing that with work and continuous prayer I can be led by God. Please pray for the following: Mrs. Elvia, Jesus, Sergio de la Rosa, Victor Gomez and Cesar Gomez, my girlfriend Alethia, my family whom I miss, and for my personal life that God renews every day, for my strength and that He will always allow me to evangelize.
