Track Assembly Instructions

Tire Guide Installation:

1. Insert a 112-155 carriage bolt in each hole of a 825-52tire guide. If the fit is too tight, it may be necessary torun a 21/64" drill bit through first. Orient the squareneck of the bolt with the square hole in the guide andpress in place (use a channel lock pliers if necessary).Figure 1 and 2.

2. Assemble the tire guide to the track as in Figure 3afor Avengers (with Rawhide III tires or Argo AT18925x10-9 tires) or as in Figure 3b for 8x8 Frontier (withArgo AT189 24x10-8 tires).

3. Assemble an 825-53 backing plate to the protruding bolts on the tread side of the track. Figure 4.

4. Secure with two 108-24 washers and 117-21 locknuts. Figure 5. Be careful not to over-tighten; it is quite easy2

to squish the plastic and rubber too much.

Installing The Hinge Assembly

IMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORTTTTTANTANTANTANTANTFor correct FRONTIER 8x8 track length, therubber track must first be trimmed on each end.Trim, such that the edge of the 825-54 HingeLacing when installed, will mount up against therubber lug of the track. To do this, temporarilyinstall the hinge to the current hole location oneach end of the track. Then, using the straightedge of the hinge as a guide, cut the hinge offusing a utility knife. Reinstall and centre the hingeto the rubber track with the edge up against thelug. Re-drill new holes into the rubber using theholes in the hinge as a guide.DO NOT CUT THE TRACK FOR AVENGERINSTALLATION. FASTEN USING EXISTINGHOLES AT EDGE OF TRACK.

Fastening the Hinge

5. Attach the 825-54 Track Lacing Hinge to one edgeof the rubber track. Align the holes of the hinge, withthe holes that are in the track. Figure 6.

NONONONONOTETETETETEFour of these holes will need to be used to mountthe track guides onto the hinge. Figure 6.

6. Install the 103-08 1/4" x 1" bolt through the hingeensuring that the head of the bolt is to the inside of

Installing the Axle Extensions:

12. Raise the vehicle off the ground and remove the wheels

13. Install the extension studs on all of the vehicle wheelstuds and tighten securely with a 5/8" socket. SeeFigure 13.

IMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORTTTTTANTANTANTANTANTThe extension studs have hexagonal sides and mustsit properly within the slots on the axle extensioncollar. See Figure 14. If the extension studs aremisaligned with the slots of the axle extension collarwhen tightened, adjust each stud as necessary bytightening them further (never by loosening them),until alignment allows for the extension collar to slideon easily (by hand), up against the axle hub. Torqueto a minimum of 40 ft. lbs. Once the extension studsare tightened and aligned correctly, they will notrequire re-tightening unless they are removed. However, it is very important that with the RubberTracks installed, the wheel nuts of the Argo aretightened to 55 ft. lbs. initially, re-torqued after thefirst 3 to 5 hours of operation, then again after thenext 10 hours, followed by re-torquing every 25 hoursof operation.

NONONONONOTETETETETEThe extension studs have hexagonal sides andmust sit properly within the slots on the axle ex-tension. (See Fig. 14) If the extension studs aremisaligned, adjust them by tightening only.

Damage to the extension studs, wheel hub studs,or axle extension may occur if the extensionstuds are not tightened correctly. Use goodjudgement when installing.

14. Place the axle extension collars onto theextension studs and seat firmly against theaxle hub plate. The small hole must face away from the hub plate.

Avenger & 8x8 FrontierTrack Installation:

1. Tires must be checked for size and installed in aspecific order as shown in the chart. If this is notdone, chain windup will happen causing damage to the chain tensioning system and possibly, to otherdrive system components. Tires should be sized this way:a. With the tires still off the machine, inflate them

all to 5.0 psi.b. Measure the circumference of each tire using a

suitable tape measure, being sure to measurearound the center-line of the tire. Figure 16.Write down the measurement on each tire.

c. Install the tires as shown in the chart on the last page.

Two tires that measure a certain difference in circum-ference when at 5 psi, should always be the same dif-ference in circumference when at equal pressure. Checktire pressure every 10 hours and adjust to the pressuresshown in the chart.

2. Remove the air from the end tires.

Installing The Tracks To The Vehicle

IMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORTTTTTANTANTANTANTANTBEFORE INSTALLING THE RUBBER TRACKSYSTEM, IT IS CRITICAL THAT TIRE SIZINGIS PERFORMED AND THE TIRES INSTALLEDAS SHOWN IN THE CHART. PLEASE REVIEWAND ENSURE YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THE PRE-VIOUS INSTRUCTION BEFORE PROCEEDINGWITH THE FOLLOWING:

3. Lay the two assembled tracks on the floor.

4. Drive the vehicle forward on to the tracks leaving ap-proximately 8" extending past the front tires.

5. Pull the remaining track around the rear tire and for-ward to the front of the vehicle.

6. Deflate the front and rear (or all tires) for easier instal-lation of the final track pin.

7. Join the two ends of the track and secure them in placewith C-Clamps as shown in Figure 17, so that theholes of the hinge lacing line up.

Figure 17

8. Insert the 825-56 Track Pin through one ofthe 108-23 washers and then through thehinge lacing. Be sure to install the pin fromthe outside edge of the track so the endwith the cotter pin hole ends up nearestthe vehicle lower body.

9. Secure the Track Pin in the hinge with a108-23 washer and 100-100 cotter pin atend closest to the vehicle body.

Figure 16

10. Re-inflate the tires (as shown in the chart on lastpage). With the tires installed and inflated as shownin the chart, there should be 2 to 3 inches of sagbetween the bottom of the second (or third) tireand the inside surface of the track when thevehicle is elevated. Figure 18 & 19. This mayrequire the installation of a track extension oradditional hinge kit. With typical 79-80" tires,

(Avenger) the total track length should be 235" (including hinges and track extensions.) The extension can beeasily removed if the wheels slip within the track during winter use.NOTE 1: Putting too much tension in the track will severely stress the axles, bearings and frame.NOTE 2: Typical 76-77"(Frontier 8x8 track setup) will more than likely not require the 2" Extension.

Removal of Argo Track System

1. Use a "C" clamp style vise grip to take the tension off the pin. Remove the flat washer and cotter pin. With a driftpunch and hammer, tap the pin until it can be grabbed and pulled from the hinge lacing.

If an Argo is taken outdoors into freezing temperatures after the track system has been installed indoors atnormal room temperature, the tires will lose air pressure. After the tires have cooled down to the outdoortemperature where the vehicle is to be operated, the tire pressure should be rechecked and adjusted as required.

Extreme CAUTION is advised when crossing ice covered water. The vehicle may sink if it breaks through the icesurface and fills with water. Make sure drain plugs are securely in place, and do not overload the vehicle. Should thevehicle break through the ice, attempt to back the vehicle out. During this maneuver, take care that water does notenter the engine compartment. Refer to the Argo Operator’s Manual for additional information on safe operation inwater.

Under certain winter conditions, such as a rapid drop in temperature after a mild period, slush can build up on thetrack to the point that the ARGO may be unable to move. Stop periodically to clean snow and ice from the axles andtrack components to prevent buildup.

Note: Axle extensions are recommended for use only with Argo Super/Rubber tracksand should be removed for tire-only use.

*Note: Standard = Standard Argo tire installationReversed = Opposite to the normal Argo tire installationTire tread direction is not as important as tire size/position or tire pressure. It has somebenefit in lowered chain loads but should be considered only if tire size/position requirementsare met.

IMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORIMPORTTTTTANTANTANTANTANTWith typical 79-80" tires (Avenger Only), the total track length should be 235" pin to pin (including

Page 8: 825-50-1 Rubber Track Kit08-07 - Argo Parts & Salesargoparts.com/files/825-50-1-rubber-track-kit10-09.pdf · press in place (use a channel lock ... punch and hammer, ... temperature

hinges and track extensions).

There should be 2 to 3 inches of sag between the bottom of the second (or third) tire and theinside surface of the track when the vehicle is elevated (Avenger or Frontier 8x8)

Some sidewall wear may occur and be noticeable when running 24" Argo Frontier tires with rubbertracks. This is due to close track guide/tire sidewall tolerances and is considered normal wear. The integrity of the tire will not be affected.

Maximum Total Load Capacity in Water of an Avenger with rubbertracks is: 365kg (800lbs.)

Rubber tracks on an Avenger work best in snow or marsh conditions.Care must be taken when turning to prevent the inside edge of the
