throughput of air on warm days and, whenlow temperatures prevail, it ensures thatthe driver’s cabin heats up quickly and thewindscreen is de-iced rapidly.
In the first case, the volume of air is regu-lated continuously, while in the secondcase the water flow is controlled. This regulation also takes place if the vehicle isfitted with an additional air conditioningunit.
Furthermore, ATC allows the driver toswitch off the automatic mode and regu-late the speed of the fan manually.

ATC in trucks
When traveling long distances, it has beentratitionally necessary to continuously re-adjust the manual heater in order toachieve an agreeable temperature in thedriver’s cabin.
The ATC electronic system regulates thetemperature in line with a characteristiccurve designed to reflect the humansense of comfort. When the outside tem-perature is low, a slightly higher tempera-ture is generated on the inside without thedriver’s intervention, e.g. by re-adjustingthe set value or other manual alterations. In addition, ATC provides for an increased

More comfort on city buses and motor coaches
Operation
The water and/or air quantity for the passenger and driver sections are con-trolled separately. The system for the pas-senger section can be switched off by apushbutton.
To control the temperature of the driversection, the city bus driver has all theusual compact controls within easy reach. The control facility also ensures a pleasantenvironment for this area.

ATC in city buses
VDV Publication 236 has established anew basis for air conditioning in citybuses. In a further development we haveprovided for the use of WABCO compo-nents to fully meet these requirements. The WABCO air conditioning componentsbenefit from the experience and the volume effects of our various systems forcommercial vehicles. The componentshave CAN interfaces to allow them tocommunicate with each other and withother systems.
WABCO’s operating console is based onfour basic modules, to be used in differentconfigurations together with substations.

ATC in motor coaches
Based on the ATC city bus system, amore complex variant has been develo-ped for motor coaches. This also consistsof an operating console and up to eightsubstations (identical to the city bus sub-stations). Unlike in buses, however, ATC inmotor coaches provides for a larger scopeof intervention by the driver. Temperatures, index values and fan speeds are shownon the dashboard display. A timer for thepre-selection of the auxiliary heatingsystem has also been integrated in thecontrol system.
WABCO’s diagnostic controller and othercustom-made diagnostic equipment canbe used on all ATC CAN systems.
For vehicles without a central display,WABCO offers an operating console withan integrated display. It indicates the basic settings or the current adjustmentaccording to the driver’s demand withouttime delay. Moreover, the display directlydelivers error messages when the systemfails. The operating console with displayfits perfectly into the family of ATC CANsystems, featuring high operating comfortand excellent control.

Using six characteristics for which theparameters can be set, this ECU controlsa water valve, the fan and the flaps, together with a potentiometer.
The modular concept permits comfortablecontrol of driver’s and passenger’s areas.Heating/ventilation/air conditioning com-ponents are actuated automatically.
Unlike the city bus variant, this operatingconsole permits a wide range of settingsfor the passenger area.
The operating console with displayexpands the application of the ATC CANsystems to vehicles without central indicating device.
The modular design is achieved by thissubstation. These universal substationsare used depending on the type of equipment fitted.
This fan module is used for the continuousactuation of the pulse-width modulationfor fans (max. 14 amps).

DC and step motor variants are availablefor the electrical water valve, with a maxi-mum of 1,400 l/h.
Both water valves have a flow rate of1,800 l/h and are actuated by a DC motorwith potentiometer return.
At the outlet of the heat exchanger, thissensor picks up the air outlet temperatureand transmits it to the ECU as an electrical value.
The vehicle’s initial behavior (includingauxiliary heating) is picked up by this temperature sensor via the water of theheating system.
To maintain the comfort characteristic, the disturbance variable of the outsidetemperature is monitored by our elec-tronic control units.
In vehicles without ATC ECU, the drivercan control the water quantity for thewater valve via a bowden cable.
