FUEL

The fuel used to operate engines is highlyflammable and becomes explosive underparticular conditions. Refuelling and engineservice should take place in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped.Do not smoke when refuelling or in theproximity of sources of fuel vapours. Avoidcontact with open flames, sources of sparksor any other source which may ignite thefuel or lead to explosion. Take care not tospill fuel out of the filler, or it may ignitewhen in contact with hot engine parts. Inthe event of accidental fuel spillage, makesure the affected area is fully dry beforestarting the engine. Fuel expands from heatand when left under direct sunlight. Neverfill the fuel tank up to the rim. Tighten thefiller cap securely after each refuelling.Avoid contact with skin. Do not inhalevapours. Do not swallow fuel. Do nottransfer fuel between different containersusing a hose.

BRAKE FLUID - Recommendations

NOTE This vehicle is fitted with front andrear disc brakes. Each braking system is operated by anindependent hydraulic circuit. The informationprovided below applies to both brakingsystems.

Any sudden changes in play or hardness inthe brake lever are warning signs ofproblems with the hydraulic circuits. If in doubt about the braking efficiency ofyour bike or if you are not able to performroutine checks, contact an aprilia OfficialDealer.

Ensure that the brake discs and brakelinings have not become contaminated withoil or grease. This is particularly importantafter servicing or inspections.Make sure the brake lines are not twistedor worn.

KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.

DO NOT RELEASE BRAKE FLUID INTO THEENVIRONMENT.

DISC BRAKES

The brakes are critical to your safety andmust always be kept in sleek running order.Check the brakes before each ride.

A dirty disc soils the pads, leading to lossof braking. Dirty pads must be replaced, whereas a dirty brake disk may be cleanedwith a high-quality degreasing product.

NOTE This vehicle is fitted with front andrear disc brakes. Each braking system isoperated by an independent hydraulic circuit. The information provided below applies toboth braking systems.Brake fluid level decreases gradually as thebrake pads wear down. The brake reservoirs are placed under thehandlebar cover, near the brake leverconnections.Check brake fluid level in the reservoirs atregular intervals - see (CHECKING BRAKEFLUID LEVEL) at the side - and inspectionthe brake pads periodically for wear, seepage 48 (CHECKING THE BRAKE PADS FORWEAR)

Do not ride if the braking system is leaking.

CHECKING BRAKE FLUID LEVELCheck level as follows:

NOTE Place the vehicle on firm, levelground.

◆ Place the vehicle on the centre stand.◆ Turn the handlebar. The fluid in the reservoir

must be parallel with the “MIN” mark onthe sight glass (1).

◆ Ensure that fluid level in the reservoir isabove the “MIN” mark on the sight glass (1).

MIN = minimum level.

WARNING

Do not ride when brake fluid level is belowthe “MIN” mark.

Brake fluid level decreases gradually asthe brake pads wear down.

◆ Check the brake pads and brake disc forwear, see page 48 (CHECKING THE BRAKEPADS FOR WEAR).

If the brake pads and/or the brake disc arein good condition:◆ Contact an aprilia Official Dealer and have

brake fluid level topped up.

1COOLANT

Do not ride when coolant is below the “MIN”level.

Check coolant level every 2000 km (1250miles) and after a long trip. Have coolantchanged at an aprilia Official Dealer everytwo years.

Coolant is toxic when ingested. Contactwith eyes or skin may cause irritation. Inthe event of contact with eyes, rinserepeatedly with abundant water and seekmedical advice. In the event of ingestion, induce vomiting, rinse mouth and throatwith abundant water and seek medicaladvice immediately.DO NOT RELEASE INTO THEENVIRONMENT.KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.Take care not to spill coolant onto hot engineparts. It may ignite and produce invisibleflames. Wear latex gloves when servicing.Have coolant changed at an aprilia OfficialDealer.

Coolant mixture is a solution of 50% waterand 50% anti-freeze.This is the ideal solution for most operatingtemperatures and provides good corrosionprotection. This solution is also suited to the warmseason, as it is less prone to evaporativeloss and will reduce the need for top-ups. Inaddition, less water evaporation means fewerminerals salts depositing in the radiator, whichhelps preserve the efficiency of the coolingsystem. When temperature drops below zero degreescentigrade, check the cooling systemfrequently and add more anti-freeze (up to60% maximum) to the solution.

Use distilled water in the coolant mixture.

Do not remove the expansion tank plug (1)when the engine is hot, since coolant isunder pressure and very hot.Contact with skin or clothes, may causesevere scalding and/or damage.

TYRES

This vehicle is fitted with tubeless tyres.

Check tyre inflation pressures periodicallywith the tyres at room temperature, seepage 70 (TECHNICAL DATA).

Checking pressure on hot tyres will resultin inaccurate measurement.Take care to check tyres pressures beforeand after a long journey.

An overinflated tyre will provide a harshride, reduce riding comfort and stabilitywhen cornering.

An underinflated tyre will extend the contactpatch to include a larger portion of the tyrewall (1). When this is the case, the tyremay slip on or become separated from therim, leading to loss of control.

The tyre may even jump off the rim underhard braking.Lastly, the vehicle may skid in a bend.

Inspect tread surface and check for wear.Badly worn tyres adversely affect tractionand handling.

Some of the tyre types approved for thisvehicle are fitted with wear indicators. There are various types of wear indicators.Inspect tread surface and check for wear.Badly worn tyres adversely affect tractionand handling.Enquire about correct wear inspection pro-cedure with your supplier.

Old tyres may not ensure full grip due tomaterial ageing – even when they are stillwithin the wear limit – and must bereplaced.

Always change a worn tyre. A tyre thatbecomes punctured in the tread area shouldbe changed when the puncture is largerthan 5 mm.The wheel must be balanced after eachtyre repair.

Use only tyres of the specified size, seepage 70 (TECHNICAL DATA).

Never use tube tyres on tubeless tyre rims,or viceversa.

Always check that the caps are in place onthe valves, or the tyres may deflatesuddenly.

Avoid harsh accelerations and slow downgradually or you might lose control of thevehicle.Avoid harsh braking. Slow down and applyboth brakes. Adjust the pressure on thebrakes to decelerate gradually.Using one brake only reduces braking forcesignificantly and may lock a wheel resultingin loss of grip. To stop while riding uphill, close the throttle and simply use the brakesto keep the vehicle steady.Using the engineto keep the vehicle steady may result inthe converter overheating.

When approaching a bend, slow down orbrake in good time. Take the bend at steadyspeed or accelerate slightly. Late brakingmay put the vehicle into a skid.Use the brakes sparingly when ridingdownhill, or the brake lining may overheatand impair braking efficiency. Use enginebraking and apply both brakesintermittently. Never ride downhill with theengine off. When riding on wet or slipperysurfaces (such as snow, ice, mud), slowdown, avoid harsh braking and do notswerve suddenly to avoid skidding.Watch for skid hazards and changes in theroad surface. Uneven road surfaces, rails, inspection covers, painted signals, construction site metal covers becomeslippery in rainy weather and must benegotiated carefully, smoothly and keepingthe vehicle upright.

Always signal your intention to change laneor direction in good time using the directionindicators. Avoid sudden manoeuvres.Switch off the direction indicatorsimmediately after changing direction. Bevery careful when overtaking or beingovertaken. When it rains, large vehicles lift surfacewater, which affects visibility. In addition, the air displacement may make you losecontrol of the vehicle.

RUNNING-IN

After covering the first 1000 km (625 mi),perform the checks listed in the “post running-in” column of the “PERIODIC MAINTENANCECHART” (see pages 41-42).Failure to perform these checks may lead topersonal injury to yourself or third persons, orvehicle damage.Proper engine running-in is essential to preservingengine life and performance over time. Twistyroads and gradients are ideal to run in engine, suspension and brakes effectively.

NOTE Top acceleration and speed are onlyobtained after covering the first 1000 km (625mi).Observe the following instructions:◆ Do not flip the throttle open abruptly when

the engine is running at low speed, bothduring and after the running-in period.

◆ 0-100 km (0-62 mi)Apply the brakes gently and avoid hard, prolonged braking until covering the first 100km (62 mi). This will allow the brake pad liningto wear in properly rubbing on the brake discs.

◆ 0-500 km (0-312 mi)Never exceed 80% of top speed during thefirst 500 km (312 mi).

◆ Vary speed frequently.◆ After the first 1000 km (625 mi), progresively

increase speed until reaching max. perfor-mance.

STOPPING

If possible, avoid stopping abruptly orslowing down suddenly. Brakeprogressively and in good time.

◆ Release the throttle twistgrip (pos. A) andapply the brakes gradually to stop thevehicle.

◆ When stopping for a short time, keep atleast one brake on.

Park the vehicle on firm and level groundto prevent it falling over. Do not lean thevehicle against walls and do not lay it downon the ground. Make sure that the vehicle, and in particular hot vehicle components, may not put the safety of persons andchildren at risk. Do not leave the vehicleunattended with the engine running or withthe key inserted into the ignition switch.Do not sit on the vehicle when the stand isdown.

◆ Stop the vehicle, see above (STOPPING).

◆ Set the engine kill switch (1) to “ ”.

Leaving the ignition switch in position “ ”when the engine is stopped may flatten thebattery.

◆ Turn the key (2) and set the ignition switch(3) to position “ “.

◆ Place the vehicle on the stand, see page39 (PLACING THE VEHICLE ON THESTAND).

Do not leave the key in the ignition switch.

◆ Lock the steering, see page 19 (STEERINGLOCK) and extract the key.

NOTE The vehicle is fitted with an

immobilizer anti-theft system by

an electronic system that

prevents engine starting unless an authorisedkey is used - for added security. Theimmobilizer system is automatically activatedeach time the ignition key is removed fromthe switch.

Keep the second key in a safe place, as youcannot make any copy once lost.If this should be the case, many parts of thevehicle, locks included, will have to bechanged.

Embedded in the key grip is a transponder,an electronic device that modulates theradiofrequency signal emitted by a specialantenna built into the switch when the key isturned to on. The modulated signal acts as a“password” that tells the system control unitwhether an authorised key is being used tostart the engine.

MAINTENANCE

Fire hazard.Keep fuel and other flammable productsaway from electric components. Before servicing or inspecting themotorcycle: stop the engine and removethe key from the ignition switch; allow forthe engine and exhaust system to cooldown; where possible, lift the motorcycleusing adequate equipment placed on firmand level ground.Make sure that the room is properlyventilated before proceeding. Be careful ofany parts of the engine or exhaust systemwhich may still be hot to the touch in orderto avoid scalds or burns.Never put any mechanical parts or othervehicle components in your mouth whenyou have both hands busy. None of themotorcycle components is edible. Somecomponents are harmful to the human bodyor toxic.

Unless expressly specified otherwise, motorcycle assemblies are refitted or re-assembled by reversing the removal ordismantling procedure.Wear latex gloves before servicing thevehicle

Normally, the owner can take care of routinemaintenance. However, some maintenanceoperations require specific tools and are bestleft to experienced mechanics.

If you need assistance or technical advice, contact an aprilia Official Dealer forguaranteed accurate, prompt service.

‘We recommend having the vehicle road-tested at the Dealer after repair or servicing. In addition, perform the “Pre-ride checks”after any maintenance operation, see page33 (PRE-RIDE CHECKS CHART).

Inspect the brake pads before each ride. This is a quick inspection procedure todetermine brake pads wear:◆ Place the vehicle on the centre stand.◆ Visually inspect the area between brake

disc and brake pads proceeding as follows.

FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS– Check the pads of both calipers looking

from the bottom up at the front end.

REAR BRAKE CALIPER– Check both pads (C) looking from the

bottom up at the rear end.

If brake pads were allowed to wear downuntil uncovering the metal substrate, metal-to-metal contact with the brake disc wouldlead to rattle and the brake callipersparking. This will result in loss of brakingand brake disc damage, causing adangerous riding condition.

◆ When the lining material of even just oneof the brake pads is worn down to nearly1.5 mm, have both brake pads changed.
