HISTORY

Comco was founded in 1986 in Hague, Saskatchewan with only two employees specializing in control panel assembly.

In 1990 Comco added control system integration, marking the journey into industrial automation. The first international project came in 1992; an irrigation gate control for a Nile tributary in upper Egypt.

Comco moved operations to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1995 and continued to grow. Areas of specialization were expanded into providing control systems for grain handling.

At the turn of the century Comco began to focus on the feed industry, starting with post-pelleting liquid application (PPLA). In 2005 the company embarked on the

development of custom process control software. These developments ultimately matured into the Helm Automation Suite, providing advanced front to back automation solutions for many industries including the feed milling industry.

Along with PPLA systems Comco’s liquid division also designed and manufactured micro feeders and the WeighFlex line for measuring grain and feed flow rates. The success of these ventures led to the sale of the liquid division in early 2015.

Comco’s CSA approved panel shop has been part of Comco since incorporation. All panels are built conforming to strict codes and are fully tested in house before released to the customer. Comco has experience with such brands as AllenBradley, GE, ABB, Siemens, Schneider Square D and Telemechanique. We allow for customer input into the type of hardware preferred in their facility.

Our solutions support several transactions running in parallel with the ability to merge flows (passing commodity checks). Comco was hired to provide emergency support on the existing control system until a brand new Comco control system could be installed. Through technical site visits and numerous phone calls, Comco developed a scope of operations and reprogrammed the automation system. The facility was able to reuse all of their existing PLC hardware, which was a huge cost savings. On site start up and training services were provided.

Comco provided full automation of the lentil splitting plant which included auto-routing. Many of the processes were uniquely designed mechanically and we worked with the customer to develop appropriate control strategies. Sensor monitoring includes temperature, moisture, pressure, flow, level, speed and amperage for the various processes.

FEED INDUSTRY

Over half of our 75 supported feed mills are running the Helm Automation Suite. Helm supports modules for batching, receiving, loadout, transfer, grinding, pelleting, blending, and cleaning.

Helm provides inventory and lot tracking capabilities that go beyond FDA and CFIA requirements. Comprehensive auditing tracks every operator action, parameter or recipe modification, and material usage over the lifetime of the system.

The fully extensible import/export system allows for easy data exchange between existing business platforms.

Well established feed mill operating 24/7. Sietsema has been a long term customer of Comco and has recently upgraded their control system to use Helm. Front to back automation including product lot costing at loadout.
