DentistAre you ready for your dentist appointment?

1. Dental X-rays don’t cause cancer.

If you’re seeing a dentist for the first time, the dental hygienist will take an X-ray of your teeth. These x-rays will not give you cancer. In fact, you’ll get more radiation by sitting outside for an hour than by getting a dental X-ray.

2. Essentials oils can calm you.

To calm yourself down before your dentist appointment, dab some lavender or chamomile essential oils on your temples and pulse points. These wonderfully relaxing smells will ease your anxiety while you sit in the dental chair.

3. Don’t expect perfect teeth.

Don’t expect your teeth to look like Angelina Jolie’s or Reese Witherspoon’s after your dental visit. At a general dentist appointment, you’ll only get a teeth cleaning and a screening for oral cancer.

If you want a dramatic change to your smile, you’ll need to see an orthodontist or a prosthodontist.

4. Start chewing xylitol gum.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute generally found in gum. If you want to reduce the bacteria in your mouth (and not add to it) chew a few pieces of xylitol gum a day. It can help keep cavities away.

5. Patients with pierced tongues beware...

Almost every dentist who’s had a patient with a pierced tongue has either had to help him with a tongue infection or a with a chipped tooth. Mouth piercings in general are never good for your mouth’s health.

6. Pulling teeth is fast and easy.

Having a tooth pulled sounds a lot worse than it is. Contrary to what your fear may tell you, it’s quick and painless because of local anesthesia and your dentist’s expertise.

7. Know your insurance.

Not only should you have your dental insurance information with you at your appointment, you should also know what your insurance covers. The dental hygienists won’t know, so you need to figure it out.

8. Bleeding gums are a bad sign.

If you don’t tell your dentist you’ve been having a problem with bleeding gums, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease, and even if you don’t think it’s a big deal, it is. Tell your dentist.
