8 Things You Should Know

Before Getting a Pet FrogFrogs are more than just cool amphibians to look at!

Page 2: 8 Things You Should Know Before Getting a Pet Frog

1. They need to be fed regularly.

Frogs can’t go weeks, or even days, without eating.

Some frogs need to be fed twice a day, once a day, or

every few days. It depends on the frog you have, so be

sure to research how often to feed your frog.

2. Some are active, some aren’t.

If you’re looking for a frog that hops and jumps around,

don’t get a large frog that’s going to sit around all day.

Beginner pet frog owners should go for more active

frogs like aquatic frogs and certain tree frogs that will

do more than sit like a lump of clay.

3. Never get a frog you don’t know.

Every frog has its own needs. Some hibernate during the

winter and some don’t. If you get a frog without

knowing what type of habitat or food it needs (or

without knowing how big it gets), you could be in for a

lot of surprises and stress.

4. Think about potential frog sitters.

When you go away on vacation, you’re going to need

someone to watch your frog. If you have a frog that

needs to be fed bugs, make sure your frog sitter is ok

with that. Think about who you know that can frog sit.

5. It’s normal for frogs to shed.

When your frog sheds, don’t be worried that it has a

skin disease. Shedding is a natural process of growth

that even frogs have to go through. Make sure your frog

sitter knows this, too!

6. It’s hard to tell between males

and females.

With some species, the female is bigger and darker, and

with other species, it’s just the opposite. Some species

have only males that sing, and some species have both

males and females that sing. There’s really no easy way

to tell, so it’s going to take some research.

7. The tank type depends on the frog.

There’s the terrestrial tank, the aquatic tank, the half

and half tank, and the arboreal tank. The type of tank

you’re going to need depends on the type of frog you’re

going to buy. If you don’t get the right type of tank for

your frog, it may not thrive or be healthy.

8. Frogs can’t be taught tricks.

If you’re looking for a pet that follows commands, goes

on walks, and snuggles you at night, a frog may not be

your best choice. You’ll probably do better with a dog or

cat. However, frogs are great pets for people who are

fascinated by this interesting amphibian.
