8 Things to Keep in Mind When Working with Forklifts

As a forklift operator, your company relies on you to make safety a priority.

Like driving a car, operating a forklift becomes second nature after a while.

That’s why it’s important to keep your knowledge of forklift safety fresh. Here are 8 tips to help you do just that.

1. Make sure training and certification are current.

If you’ve been driving a forklift for a while, it’s easy to forget to renew your certification.

You should renew your certification every 3 years.

2. Wear Safety Gear

Appropriate safety gear includes hard hat, safety shoes, visibility vest, properly fitted clothing

3. Inspect the Forklift Before Operating

OSHA requires forklift operators to inspect the vehicle before each use.

If the forklift shows any signs of defect, disrepair, or safety hazard, it must be removed from service.

4. Always Observe Forklift Speed Limits

You may be a forklift driving pro, but even so, never go beyond the recommended speed limit.

That’s typically no faster than a walking pace.

5. Make Sure You’re Completely Focused

Never operate a forklift when you’re ill, tired, or distracted.

Before each job, take a moment to evaluate your mental state.

6. Beware of Potential Hazards

Be alert and keep an eye out for: collisions, falling loads, forklift overturn, and putting others in harm’s way

7. Take Stock of Workplace Conditions

Ask yourself: Are there any obstructions or uneven surfaces preventing me from driving safely?

Is the plant floor dirty or slippery?

Can the flooring handle the weight of the load and the forklift?

8. Refresher Training is Sometimes Necessary

If you’ve had a forklift mishap or accident, it is necessary for you to take a refresher course.
