INTRODUCTION

On behalf of the Owner of 8 Five Rod Highway, we submit herein drawings, diagrams, and photographs in support of their request for permission to construct an equipment barn that would complement the current and future agricultural activities on the Agricultural Easement.

The owner operates an expanding agricultural operation at the site. It includes orchards, cane fruits, vegetables, an apiary, chickens for egg production, and a cutting garden. The farming is conducted organically and in accordance with sustainable farming practices that extend beyond the actual productive area. For example, the apiary is supported by areas of organic flowering meadow.

A crew of 3-4 farm workers visit the agricultural area several times each week during spring and summer months. Farm and maintenance equipment must be brought in from outside the property for each visit. The commitment to organic agriculture requires that equipment brought to the site is cleaned and made free of pesticides, chemicals, and non-certified organic compounds. Storing the required equipment in the proposed barn will reduce local traffic and noise, as well as streamlining the maintenance of the farm.

In recognition of the increasing needs for processing, storage, and equipment maintenance, the owner asked us to design a barn to meet those requirements, and to provide a bathroom and break area for employees.

The barn’s design aims to respect the area’s agrarian traditions and rich agricultural history, including the restoration of the Topping farmhouse in 2015. The proposal is for a simple gabled structure with an antique chestnut frame salvaged from a deconstructed barn in Eastern Pennsylvania, dated circa 1840. The exterior siding will be wide antique hemlock boards arranged vertically and joined only at the eaves line. The barn will have three large wood sliding doors mounted on traditional rolling hardware. The roof will be sheet metal with a handmade standing seam in lengths no longer than 8 feet, in keeping with the limited capacity to make longer panels before the late 20th Century. Exterior lighting will be kept to a minimum except where required by code for safe access to the doors. All exterior light fixtures will be dark sky compliant.

The enclosed drawings and images hope to show that this barn would be a modest and appropriate improvement to the agricultural landscape of Wainscott.

PLANTING NOTESA. Coordination: Prior to beginning operations, Contractor shall verify that all planting beds are in suitable condition forplanting and are well-drained. Prior to beginning any work on the site, verify that areas shown on this drawing for plantingoperations are clearly identifiable in the field. If there is any uncertainty about proposed areas for planting, notify the LandscapeArchitect at once, and do not begin work on the site until these issues are clarified.B. Protecting existing utilities: Locate and protect all utilities and structures prior to and during construction, andrepair/replace any element damage during construction at no additional cost to Owner.C. Notification: Notify Landscape Architect/Owner of any discrepancies or errors between plan and site conditions prior tocommencement of work.D. Plant material guarantee: Plant material shall be guaranteed for a period of one year after completion of installation.E. Plant location staking: All locations of plant materials to be staked in field for approval of Landscape Architect prior toplanting.F. All trees to receive min. 12"planting mix around root ball. Shrub beds to receive 6" planting mix incorporated into soil to a depth of 12".I. Tree pits: All tree pits to be excavated through any clay subsoil layers down to clean sand. Holes to be backfilled withsand to 6" below bottom of rootball and well watered to settle sand prior to planting and backfilling. Circular planting pits withvertical sides shall be dug by hand or machine methods for planting of trees and shrubs. Tree pits for trees over 6 inches in calipershall be 2 feet greater in diameter than the spread of the root mass and one foot deeper than the height of the root ball. Check treepits for drainage before planting and ensure appropriate drainage.J. Planting mix amendment for tree pits: Incorporate Mycor Tree Saver by Plant Health Care, Inc. (1-800-421-9051), anatural biofertilizer and soil conditioner, at the rate of 3 oz. per caliper inch for each proposed tree in the Planting Schedule.K. Planting mix amendment for shrub beds: Rototill Healthy Start 3-4-3, by Plant Health Care, Inc. (1-800-421-9051), anatural biofertilizer and soil conditioner, at the rate of 3 oz. into the top 2 to 4 inches of each shrub planting pit.L. Groundcover and perennial beds: Excavate groundcover and perennial beds to a depth of 10 inches below finished gradeand rototill Healthy Start 3-4-3 at the rate of 25 lb. per 1000 square feet into the top 2 to 4 inches of these beds.M. Mulch: Apply 11

2" of shredded bark mulch after drip irrigation is installed. Cover with 12" of pine needle mulch.N. Inspection of plant material: Landscape Architect to inspect all trees prior to delivery to site. Coordinate with LandscapeArchitect to review all plant material prior to installation.O. Watering: Landscape Contractor shall coordinate planting with irrigation Contractor for plants to receive necessary waterimmediately after planting and during the "growing in" period. Landscape Contractor shall inform Owner/Landscape Architect ifirrigation coverage is incomplete or inadequate. Water all plants as needed.P. Deer Protection: Wrap the trunks of all trees to a height of six (6) feet no later than September 1 to protect them fromrubbing injuries caused by deer. For trees with a considerable number of branches lower than six (6) feet, other alternatives willbe considered.
