IV. MOTIVATIONAL FACTORS IN LEARNING
The Cognitive Side of Self-regulation
Ancheta, Veronica Ann C.

What is Self-regulation? When we synthesized it, from the word “self” it’s pertaining to a one
particular person. The next one is “regulation” from the word regulate means ruling something
while dealing with detailed procedures. When we combined it, Self-regulation is controlling or
ruling yourself using systematized procedures.
Aside from the above meaning about self-regulation there are some people who gave meaning
about this, here as follows:
According to Zimmerman (2001) "Self-Regulation refers to the self-directive process through
which learners transform their mental abilities into task related skills"
While according to Berk (2003) “This is the method or procedure that learners use to manage and organize their thoughts and convert them into skills used for learning. Self-regulation is the process of continuously monitoring progress toward a goal, checking outcomes, and redirecting unsuccessful efforts”
According to Barry Zimmerman (1989), self-regulated learning involves the regulation of three general aspects of academic learning.
First- self-regulation of behavior involves the active control of the various resources students have available to them, such as their time, their study environment or the place in which they study, and their use of others such as peers and faculty members to help them.
Second- self-regulation of motivation and affect involves controlling and changing motivational beliefs such as self-efficacy and goal orientation, so that students can adapt to the demands of a course. In addition, students can learn how to control their emotions and affect (such as anxiety) in ways that improve their learning.
Third-and finally, self-regulation of cognition involves the control of various cognitive strategies for learning, such as the use of deep processing strategies that result in better learning and performance than students showed previously.
COMMON SELF-REGULATION STRATEGIES

B. Behavioral: These strategies involve actions that the student takes.C. Environmental: These strategies involve seeking assistance and structuring of the
physical study environment.
